Vtis, who will be remembered as having Deon a member of the Orm of Lagrave & Co,, which swindled some fifty New York mercantile drms sev- eral years ago out of vver $800,000, was arrested in this city yesterday, Lagrave & Co, obtained extensive credit from the leading firms of the city, including Stewart & Co., Claflin & Co, ana others, and when they had filled their house, which was located on Broadway, near Broome street, witha fine stock they sent the goods to P’niladelphia and soldthem at action, receiving larg: sums of money in this way. When their raseality was discovered the mon Lagrave and Otis fled, and ere followed by detectives, The former was finally ar- rested in France, and In 1872 was brought to this country, but was released on account of a defect in the Extradition treaty. The pursuit of Lagrave bya Now York detective and bis capture form one of tho most interesting pages in derective history. Ho bought a bill of goods at Stewart's, representing pimseif as a nowly established merchant, with a large Western trade, For these he paid cash, and, of course, inspired confidence. When ho re-entered the store a fow days afterward he found he could get all the goods be wanved at six months, In this way be went to other Jarge dry goods houses, giving his note at six months im each case, These goods wore sunt West to Chicago and other towns and there auctioned of.
