FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL A Bear Market Wall Street. in GOLD 102 7-8 A 102 3-4. —_——_-+---- Government Bonds Higher, States Dull and Railroads Irregular. @ONRY ON CALL ACTIVE AT 6 4 7 PER CENT. ———— Wau Srrexr, Wrpnxspay, Oct. 17-6 P. M. Opening moderately strong, prices in the share mar- kot grew ‘small by degrecs and beautifully Jess,” ‘Until quotations (matertally lower than bad been made flor many days past) were reached this morning. It was quite evident that a screw was loose some- where, and it was equally evident that the loosen: must in some way be attributable to a weakening upon the part of the bull leaders, Notto draw too fine a point upon it, the impression prevailed that these gentry were “skipping” out of their stocks with an alacrity that would have shamed the dwellers in a Stilton cheese, and guided thereby the whole ragtag and bobtail of the market tollowed suit and atempted to “skip? in company, ‘nus it bappened that between sales upon the part of the big operators and sales upon the part of the small ones, there ensued a general decline through the whole list, which marked down Lake Shore to 68, Michigan Central to 64 and Western Union to 78%. It was pretty gonerally believed that, for the moment at least, the prominent bulis had thrown up the sponge. It was confidently stated that Messrs, Cammack & Osborne had sold out and had gracetully left the continuance of the campaign to the moro eredulous tag-ena of the bow window party, which is content to hold on and suffer. With all to-day’s theorizing the one fact is established, that strong efforts to market stocks were made by somebody, und that a scale of lower prices and a general weakness were the result, A partial improvement toward the end advanced Lake Shore nearly one per vent and closed it comparatively strong. It was xiven out that the orders to purchase emanated from Mr. Gould, and the report invited buyers at the com- paratively low prices, Thero occurred rather an un- expected pinch in money to-day, the rates running up to7 per cent, with, for a short time, as much as 132 bonus bid. As usual prices cheapened toward bank hours, and there was no difficulty in procuring accom- modation on the usual terms. OPENING PRICKS.
