10 WASHINGTON. FROM OUR REGULAR CORRESPONDENT. Wasmixarox, Oct, 11, 1877. FBE CANVASS FOR THE SPEAKERSHIP— STRENGTH OF THE VARIOUS CANDIDATES. There are probably close upon a hundred demo- " epatic Congressmen in town to-night, and the canvass for the Speakersbip has grown correspondingly livcly. But it is far from being as spirited as such affairs usu- ally are, for the reason, in this instance, that the op- position is not working with any very zealous energy. The divimon of sentiment is well illustrated by the remark of one of the candidates, who said that of tbe ene hundred and Alty democ: an the House Afty are Randall men, fifty are against him and fitty aro indit- ferent, have not made ap their miads or are waiting to take sides with the wiuning man. Tho following is said to be the distribution of the Support of the several candidates:—Mr. Randall has New England, two-thirds of Pennsylvania, halt of Maryland and a scattering of from one to all the mem- bers of the delegations {rom the Soutbern and South- western States. Mr. Cox bas half of New York, a fair Bhare .of Ohio, and a good many scattering votes trom several of the Southern States, Mr. Morrison hag Illinois, Missouri and the cor- poral’s guard of hard money Western democrats. Mr. Sayler bas the best part of Ohio and the soft money Western mon, who are not a few, and a slim support from some personal admirers, Mr. Goode tould not, it is thought, command the individual voto of bis own State, but the reason thut bis elevation to the Speakorship might spoil the chances ot one or two of his fellow statesmen who are ambitious of @ scat in the United States Senate, Should the opposition to Mr. Randall become so strong as to make it in apy way formidable, and so threaten a delay in the choice of the caucus, it is proposed that the nume of Mr, Clark- sop N. Potter shall be offered as a compromise, THE VACANCY ON THE SUPREME BENCH, There 16 no reason as yet {ur recalling the prediction made in this column some time ago that the President would appoint Jadge Hunt, of Louisiana, to the va- bancy on the Bapreme vines GENERAL WASHINGTON DESPATCHES. Wasminertoy, Oct, 11, 1877, THE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE TO CONGRESS IN EXTRA SESSION. ‘The President, in bis Message to the extra session of Congress, will merely cal! attention to the deficiencies ‘nm the various appropriations and ask tbat legislation be effected to remedy tho inconveniences that exist on that account, Other matters will be postponed until the President addresses a Mossage to the regular ses- sion ip tne usual mannner, CALL FOR A DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS. ‘The following call bas been issued:— A caucus of the democratic mombers-olect to the Forty-fiith Congress, wiil be beid, according to usage, in the hall of the House of Representatives on Satur- wing, October 13, at eight o’clock, to nominate ER, Chairman of the Natiovual Congressional Committee, NOT ATTEMPTING TO INTERFERE. Governor Brown, Vice President of the Texas Pa- cific Railroad Company, passed through the city this evening without stopping. In reply to an inquiry on the subject, be said that the company was not inter- fering with or attempting to influenco !n any way the organization of the House of Representatives, FIGHT WITH DISTILLERS, BAID ON ILLICIT DISTILLERS IN NORTH CARO- LINA—PERSISTENT ATTACK ON THE REVENUE OFFICERS—PRISONERS AND CAPTURED PROP- ELTY SECURED—MURDER OF A GUIDE. Wasnincron, Oct. 11, 1877. Collector Mott, ofthe North Carolina district, sends to the Commissiuners of Internal Revenue a report of @ raid in Burke county, in his district, Five revenue officials started from Morgantown on the evening of the 1st inst. for the purpose of seizing several sHiowt stills in the South Mountains, about sixteen miles irom Morgantown. Arriving carly on tho 2d, they found three distilleries operating illicitly, all of which, with caps and worms compl: were captured and taken to Morgantown. A search in the vicinity discovered about sixty gallons of whiskey and two barrels of brandy, all unstamped, Two persons who were found in tho stilltouse were ar- rested and confined in jail to await trial. Their names tre N. and A. Yorke, and they were working in the stillhouse when arrested. ATTACK ON THE OFFICERS, While searching the vicinity fire was opened upon the revenue officers by persons concealed in tho bushes and benind trees, The number of assailants is timated to be about twelve, They were armed with fifles. The officers retreated with their prisoners wud captored property down the mountain, being met at every turn of the rough road by the attacking party, who, out of sight and range of the officers’ pistols, kept up 4 persistent Liro. OFFICERS WOUNDED. All the officers excepting one were hit with bullets, and Deputy Collector Gillcepic, who was at tne head of the party, was seriously wounded. A horse ridden by one of th rty was killed early in the day, and another was severely wounded. ‘The locality raided 1s notoriously a dangerous one, and the inhabitants are unscrupulous desporadoes, all interested in filicit distilling. Ju a neighboring town- ship the same officers, while in the periormnance of their duty about two weeks ago, were shot at from bo- bind ‘sheer. The Collector suggests that vigorous measures be at once taken to suppress illicit distilling in this section and to bring the offenders in the above case to justice. 4 GUIDE MURDERED. A. M.
