S10! THE TRUTH?! — What People Think and Say of Tweed’s Confession, MAYOR ELY BELIEVES IT. | Effect of the Disclosures on Politicians Generally. a PROMPT DENIALS. ‘The publieation in the Hxnatp of a verbatim copy of Tweed’s confession was the sensation of yesterday. Everybody talked ubout it and, ip political circles more especially, it was tne all-abaonBing theme of cop- versation, Even the result of the Onio election was * pvershadowed by it. So many men prominent and well known in this city were affected by it—and among them many whose names bad never beloro been mentioned in connection with Tweed’s thieveries and briberies—that every one was, first of all, inter- sted to know whether his political friends or pairons ‘on Tweed’s binck list or not, Alter naving dis- cued the startling revelutions made in the contession to their hearts’ content, the next query which omed to be mooted everywhere was, ‘How did the Heratp get bold of it?” and this gave rise to much puzzling, guessing and wondering. One man declared tuat Tweed had given it to the Emax in order to convince the public of Lis candor and earnestness in voluntecring to become State’s evir dence; another guessed that Mr, Fairchild must have sought to justify bis course in relusing to release weed upon this statement by exposing ite insufli- ciency through the columas of the H#RALD. THE NEW PORTION OF TRE CONF KHBION. While the first interest of novelty in Twoed’s story of the Ring has undoubtealy somewhat worn of people were yet amazed and siartied by tho new revclations contained in the statement, which showed that this mine of wonders bad not been exhausted yet, It was generally remurked thatthe confession as published in yestorday’s Herano contained aiarge number of names which bad not come out either in the published abstr —or what purported to be absiracts—o{ the confession or in the course of Tweed’s testimony be- fore the committee of the Board of Aldermen, Those portions of the story giving exact amounts of cheeks paid to Ring officials aud Tweed’s aids and advisers; bis narrative of the famous voucher rob- Dery, the Icading figure in which eeemed to have been one N, H, Cook, and which has never belore been @ragged to the light; the details he gave about the election of Justices Folger and Audrews to the Court ‘of Appeals by means dectdedly “crooked;” his direct implication of ex-Speakor Husted as the partner of Frear in extorting large sums of money Jor sand and gravel in the Department of l’arks; his enormous losses in disposing of his real estate, which had cost him ubout two and a baif millions, and which he had | to sell for one-half that amount, thus losing avout a million aud a quarter; the “fat'? pickings of his law- yers aud the liberal loans—most of them still unre- turned—and donations received by his army of friends and henchmen, some of whgm still flourish in pubiic life—these aud other revelations, which were more or Jess new to the public, were much commented upon and widely discussed in places of ) ub:ic gatherings. DID THE CONFXESION CREATE BYMPATHY FOR TWEED? It Was very easy to notice by watching the drift of | Popalar opinion, through conversations with all sorts | Di people, that 'weeu’s confession is generally not re- farued as of much value to the comuuuity, und that Attorney General Faircnila’s refusal to liberate [weed upon the strength of 1t18 indorsed by most people. Suid a promimeut politician, “Tweed represents uim- wf fu this statement as having been stripped of almost all bis property. What, then, does bis restiution amount to? So larae his testimony in the Navarro meter case and oiner sults against the city 1s con. cerned, 1 think that the publicity which bas alreauy deen given iy the irauds i eonnection with these ruses has killed those saits and the eity hux nothing to lear trom them, Tweed ts the grestest criminal of them all, and yet he asks that he wud bis chic! ailiee, Frear and Kiog, shall be promised immunity, in order that Some sinall try thieves might be punished. The | big thet proposes to turn State's evidence against the Emall thieves—a nice propusition, indeed !”” MAYOR ELY BELIEVES TIE CONFESSION. As to tue truth of the contession, most people at first Diugh seemed to believe tn its sudstantial accuracy as regards the leading Inets, although many republicans | stubbornly pretendea to deny it in order to clear Senator Woodin. Mayor Ely was called upon and was usked:— “What do you think of Tweed’s confession?” “IVs @ great expose," he replied; ‘1 bave reud it vareiully,”? “What reliance do you place in Tweed’s statements, | Mr. Muyor ?”” | Mayor Ely answered with great readiness and barked empuasis, “1 believe it is the truth!’ It would have been very interesting to learn the | jor’s Views of the effect of the publication of the | Miession at length, but at this moment a messenger rom Comptrolicr Kelly arrived, who caiied bum away on Important business.
