Postmafter General Key has received a letter from an ex- United States district attorney in Michigan charging that Col Porter up toa recent date assistant postmaster in this cicy was a lobbyist and corruptionist of the worst sort. The writer of tbe letter offers to prove hat Porter received $48,000 for himself and frier ds for alding the passage o f the Portage canal bill. He offers to prove that Porter was only the tool of the men who appointe! him to office and kept him retaincd, and that he divided the spoils with one very promi- nent politician not_ named. The writer re- fers lo Bepators Christiancy and David Davis to youch for bis own character. THE SPEAKERSHIP.—The Speakership contest presents no pew phase to-day. Tne 8 tuation in @ nutshell is this: Sifting all sources of informati and a canvass of the grourd, Randall bas about 48 votes pledges beyond a certainty on the first ballot, and has the even chance of § more, which will make £6. The balance of the democratic strength is diffused Fespectively. between Sayle:,Cox, Goode, Morrison and Blackburn. The oppo- vents of Randall have abandoned any gea- eral combination, but will endeavor to unite the free trade and anti-resumption element of the west aud south and = the candidate to be presented to the caucus either from the west or sonth. It 18 now almost certain that only three pames will be presented to the caucus. These will be either Randall, Sayler and Cox, or Randall, Goode and Cox. NAVAL GRDERS.—Commodore P. OLp LETTERS FROM Mr. Lincoun Dis CoVERED.—In the re-arrangement of the tiles of official records, rendered necessary by the late fire,a letterdated Springfield, Ilinois, June 22, 1849, from “A. Lincoin,” addressed lo the Secretary of the Interior, was found, requesting the secretary to transmit to him the papers on file in the departmeat recom- mending him (Lincoln) for commissioner of tbe general land office, if not inconsistent With the rules of the department. Avother letter from Mr. Lincoln, addressed to John Addison, esq., and dated Springfield, 111, September 9, 180, was found, asking that some papers remaining at the Department of the luterior, recommending him for the po- sition of missioner of the general land office, be Withdrawn. The failure of Mr. Lincoln to obiain the commissionership did not, it seems, act 88 @ bar to bis accession to the bighest office in the gift of the peopie. THE PATENT OFFICE Roor.—Considera- ble criticism has been evoked in relation to the construction of the temporary roof of the Patent Office, and the assertion has been made that many valuable records of the department were injured or ruined by the storm of the 4th insiant, in conseq.ence of the absence of said roof. Reports trom the head of every bureau occupying quarters in | Ube department, to Secretary Scharz, show that not a single record was aged OF was destroyed by the cylone in question. Most of the is were in water construction of the roof under the directio3 of Mr. 8. T. G.
