a e AINANGHL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market More Active, but Irregular. —_——-. THE COAL STOCKS STRONGER —: Government Stocks Firm and Railroad Bonds Irregular. -_—-—e——- GOLD 107 A 107 1-8 A 107. Money on Call Easy at 2 a 2 1-2 Per Cent. . Wau Sremsn, Wrossspay, May 10—6 P, M. ‘There was ratbor more animation in the stock mar- kot this morning, and the sales list shows an increase 50,000 shares over yesterday’s business. A part of this was due toa fresh’ excitement in Western Union, which proved to be exceptionally weak and sold down nearly two points irom the best figuros of yesterday. ‘A day of two since it was the favorite of the market, the bulls en masse pretending to foresee a sure prow in its purchuse, and even the bears conlessing that it was dangerous property to sell short, This morning it turved out as flut us small beer, with considerable more eugerness to pour out long stock through the bung than through the spigot. As a reason for this sudden chance 01 base the report was widely circulated that the busivess of the company bad seriousty tullen off aod that the extension of the Atlantic aud Pacitle lines to New. Orleans and other Southern cities would scon be an accomplished fact and a farther source of opposition. Itisa little curious that this Information should only have been obtained within the last forty-elwht hours, when the “talk”? has been all the other way for the last month, A further cause for the increage of transactions was the return to the murket of several of the large operators, who did soma lively skirmishing, particularly in Lake Shore and the cou! stocks, but changed sides so frequently, to all ap- pearunces, that the most experienced scalpers failed to make out whether they were short or jong—friends ortoce. In early dealings the anthracites were heavy and lower; the action at the mecting being taken to | toreshiidow an abandonment of the compact promised for the 1st of June, while much doubt was expressed us to Mr, Gowen’s consent to stop production for a month, as was suggested py the coal representa- tives, In the afternoon, however, a strong rully set in, which was started and kept going by @ report that Mr. Gowen had cabled ever his approbation of the project. Any stepataken to limit production | and thereby to agsist in working off the superabundant | supply, with a consequent improvement in prices, seem to be in accordance with commercial coininon nsc—a commodity which the managers of these cor- porations have not recently been much troubled with. There remain, however, the domestic difficulties at- taching to the closing of mines, the support of miners | out of work, and, perhaps the need of ready money, which may prove embarrassing. A further source of the carly depression, which should tiave been noted above, sprang from a rumor that the Pennsylvania Coal Company had contracted with the Eric Railway for (he conveyance of their coal to tidewater at rates so layorable that they would be enabied to materially un- derselt their competitors. Whether such arrangements taye been made or not it 13 quite certain that the Pennsylvania having stuck to its icgitimate business and kept outof the mongrel condition of the other com- panies is alone capable of assuming an antagonistic position and of keeping it. ‘The general railway list, in sympathy with the egal shares, grew beiter toward | sue close and finished nearly up to the highest figures ox the day. THR SALES TO-DAY, ‘The sales of active stocks to-day aggregated 185,449 shares, which were distributed as follows:—New York Ceutral, 10,780; Harlem, 210; Erie, 100; Lake Shore, 20, Northwestern, 100; Northwestern preferred, 1,400; Rock Island, 6,000; Milwaukee and St, Paul, 100; Miiwaukee and St, Paul preferred, 4,900; Dela- ware, Lackawanna and Western, 57,600; New Jorsey Central, 200; Delaware and Hudson Canal, 9,722; Mor- risand Essex, 8,780; Michigan Central, 3,625; Ulinols Central, 600; 6, and I, G, 300; Hannibal and St. Joseph, 300; Hannibal and St. Joseph preterred, 10 Olio and Mississippl, 1,500; Western Union, 42,700; Pacific Mail, 1,800; American Merchanis’ Union Ex- press, 507.
