~PINANCAL AND CONMERCL The Stock Market Active and Strong, With Weakness at the Close. 107 GOLD STEADY AT —— Government and Railroad Bonds Higher. MONEY ON CALL BASY AT 2 4 3 PER CENT. pei Wann Street, } Monpay, May 7—6 7. M. In comparison with Saturday’s business transactions to-day were less by 35,000 shares, and the interest manifested was smatier in proportion, In fact, there was but little eagerness to cast venturous lines into the troubled waters of speculation, and such as did so were scarcely rewarded with 4 good bite the long aay through, Nibbles were abundant, as was expressed in the frequent bobbing up and down of prices; but thore wae no running away witn the bait im the angling in- terest of either bull or bear, It was very evident that tho big fish were not biting to-day, and that the market was left for the small try to nibblo at, Consequently the record is one of irregular prices, with extremes measured by fluctuations of two per cent ‘These changes attached principally to the coal stocks, to the trank railroads and to Western Union, without any particular reason, except that the demand and supply followea each other with a rise and fall, hke the swash of a wave und its subsequent decline on a shingly beach. Somo effort was made by the bears carly in the day to blacken the prospects of Rock Island by « report that the funds of the company had been used improperly and to a considerable amount by alate official, but stories of this kind are not so reaaily credited as was tue case some weeks ago, and the tale was received with so mauy grains of salt that the quo- tation actually improved while it was being told. Boing unaflected by outside pressure, enher favorable or adverse, the market to-day exhibited the simplo traits of a fair speculation, in which prices advanced or receded, us the demand at the time was greater to buy or to sell. At the very closo prices were, perhaps, a shade off trom the opening ones, but with nothing to evidence other than « healthy market, THE SALES TO-DAY.
