8 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Active and Stronger. GOLD 106 3-4 A 106 7-8 Government Bonds Firm and Railroads Stronger. Money on Call Easy at 2 a 2 1-2 Per Cent, ee Watu Strexr, Tusspar, May 1—6 P, ‘uw. It’s as fine asightas a dancing sun upon ap Easter lay to seo the ‘‘bow window” bears, who are prover- bially “deceitiul veyond all things and desperately wicked,’? dancing around the May pole of a recon- structed market, Yotto such saltatory exercises has the board for « day or two past been treated. They were at it again to-day, expressing by the frequent change of prices the agile movements of the saraband, tho lively measures of the gavotte and the stately tread of the minuet dela cour, The whole gamut of an ir- regular epeculation was run, ranging up and down the seale of prices, raising and depressing the spirits of operators and driving them alternately trom “grave to ray, from lively to severe."’ Prosaically, there were fluctuations enough the day through to suit tho tasies bf the most exacting operators, were they simply the big wigs of the market or scalpers of ‘low degree.” Most especially was this irreguiarity manifested in such stocks as Western Union, Lake Shore. Central and Hudson and the coal carriers, which ranged about with the freedom of a colt in a paddock and with about the same regard to steadiness of purpose. After midday there was every reason to believe that the course of the market was to be steauily and surely upward, for nét only were the original bulls at work, but the con- verted bear party joined hands, apparently, m tho movement. Tho result was a handsome rise through- out the active list, which carried prices up to the best points of the session. It failed to hold, bowever, to the end, for the bears having been forced pretty gen- erally to bite the dust the only real support to the market disappeared with them, and the suc- ceeding attempts at realization met with in- different success. So at gong sound the natural result exhibited itself in a list of prices lower by 44 to2 per cent than the best showing of the day, aherd ot bulls deprived ot their vaturat pasturage of short contracts and a considerable distrust of the future. 1t is nevertholess safe to say that the auspices of a better market are promising. It may be taken as a fact that the ‘investors’ scare’? 1s over for good anu all, and this circumstance alone removes the most serious stumbling block to a gonera! improvement. Yhe short snterest to avast extent has been swept away, and yet the general market shows an important advance on prices ofa week ago, and what is more {allowing tur ephemeral fluctuations) Keeps it There s geueral belief that tho worst bas been seen, shat the outlook of trade and commerce war- nts an advance, und that the moneyed public, looking for favorable investments or promise ing speculations, will soon be brought to seo it also. One thing is certain, and thav hes im che fact that the initiative must be taken by stock speculators them- selves. The public is a good follower but a bad leader, and can ouly be mduced to take hold when a sufli- ciently tempting bait 8 offered. Whether the present advance oun be sustained up to the point of securing this desirable result rests pretty nearly im the baads of those who are managing it, TUK SALES TO-DAY. ‘The sales of active stocks to-day aggregated 266,000 shares, Which were distributed as follow jew York Central, 15,477; Lrie, $10; Lake Shore, 51,364; North- do., preferred, 4,000; Rock Island, 22,803; Fort Wayne, 5: Miuwaukee and St. Paul, 1,760; do., preferred, 16,250; Pittsburg, 292; Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, 54,885; New Jersey Cen- tral, 315; Delaware and Hudson Canal, 11,702; Morris and Essex, 5,300; Michigan Central, Mlivois Central, 1,050; Hannrbal and St. Joseph, 700; do. pre- ferred, 300; Ohio and Mississippi, 100; Panama, 700; Western Union, 64,350; Avlantic and Paciflc Telegraph, 500; Pacific Mail, 3,100.
