Mme. Essipoff will devote ber performance to-night to the illustration of Chopin’s music. Her sympathy with this composer‘a works will render the perform- ance one of the most epjoyable of the series, 1t 18 proposed by a number of our prominent citl- zens to give a complimentary beneflt to Mrs. J. H. Hackett, in recognition of her abilities as an actress, her personal worth, and the progress she has made in herart. Mrs, Hackett’s ambition is high and honora- ble and this testimonial will undoubtedly receive the cordial indorsement of the public. Master Hermann Reitzel, the youthiul pianist, who is to give a concert at Steinway Hall on Wednesday afvernoun, May 10, is a son of Reitzel, the futiat, for- merly ot Thomas’ orchestra, and now a member of tho Philharmonic Society. Master Reitzel hus already ap- peared several times in public and shown himself to be a pianist of extraordinary promise. Ho received bis practical instruction trom Mr, 3. B, Mille, Master Reitzel 1s also well grounsed in the theory of masic, having received instruction in that department trom the late Charles Edward Horsiey, the English musi« cian, who died a ttle over a year ago, wuile organist of 84 John’s Chapel, Master Reitzel’s ability retlects credit on America, he having received all of his musi cul instruction here. It will doubtless be gratifying to many of the music loving public to learn that notwithstanding Ole Bull, the bigh priest of the violin, agreeably to announce- ment, recently appeared in this ctly in what was up- parently bis last concert, an effort is being made by several of our distinguisned citizens to induce the Breut artist to reappear in New York prior to his departure for Kurope. Since leaving us he has met with the most complimentary success in Philadelphia, Boston and elsewhere; but New York properly desires to udd the keystone to tbe triumpbal arch which he bas erected, and to remain chief among the happy memories which the muestro will carry back to the Ot World to be embalmed among the autamn loaves of his well spent lite. The movement in the direction above referred tw is now on foot, and we hope in # few days to be able to chronicie the result us achioved, ~~ OBITUARY. — H. H. GREGORY, M. D. Dr. H. H.
