ingl THE A Day Amid the Ruins of the Southern Hotel. REMNANTS OF TWO BODIES FOUND Evidences for Identification Dis- covered. THE MISSING SERVANT GIRLS. Stories of Narrow Escapes and Acts of Heroism. REVISED LIST OF THE DEAD. [wr TELEGRAPH TO THE HERALD.) Sr. Louis, April 13, 1877. ‘Tho search for bodies inthe ruins of the Southern Hotel has continued during the entire day, but very slowly, on account of the hot condition of the débris. At seven o'clock this morning a body was unearthed, but so badly burned that its recognition was impossi- ble, All the face and two-thirds of the upper portion of the head were burned entirely away. The arms e burned .off to the elbows, and the lower lmbs were so crisp that they feil into blackened ashes when the body was picked up Enough of tbe breast remaimed, however, to prove that the body was that of a woman, but only this, as there was no clothing about it to assist in the identification. Accloth was procured and thrown over the romains, which were then conveyed to the Morgue, where they now are. A quantity of remnants of clothing was founa all around the body, but none of the badly burned apparel belonged to a female, The body of a man was subsequently discovered about five fect from the body of tho woman, and the bodies wero identified as those of H, J. Clark and wile, of North Adains, Mass, KVIDENCES POR IDENTIFICATION, ‘There were portions of two fine white shirts and handsome night shirt, and a small pieco of a white vest, Within a foot of where tho body lay ao fine linen handkerchief with a blue border was found. In one of the corners were the initials “J, C. N.'? in-wrought with the silk. The bandkerchiof was folded, and has fdur or five boles burned in the folds. In addition to the rem- nants of clothing alluded to a letter was also found lying very close to the body, which may possibly aid In the identification. The letter was written on a sheet of paper, having the lottcr head of the National Photo- graphers’ Association, addressed to W. J. Berryam, of ew York, aud signed by James H. Fitzgibbon, the photographer of thiscity, The jetter includes a request to deliver a picture of G. V. Brooke as Richard IIL to. Mr. B. on the payment of $7 due. THK MISSING EMPLOY RS. Charles W. Sheppard, one of the proprietors of the hotel, gives it as his opinion that none of the em- Ployés of the house, excepting those heretofore ro- ported, were killed. About twenty of them are still @bdaccounted for, but it is believed that they are alive, and are either with friends in remote parts of the city br have left town, Of tho guests thirty-eight have hot reported, but the reasonable presumption is that most of them left the city the day following the fire or have since departed, REMAINS OF MR, GOULEY, The remains 0! George Frank Gouley, Grand Masonic Secretary, were removed to the Grand Lodge room, in Masonic Hail, this noon, where they will lie in state untli Sunday, when the funcral will take place, Ex- tensive preparations are being made for this event, Numerous delegations of Masons from this State ana surrounding States will participate in the ceremonies, The body of Mrs. W. C. Stewart will be taken to Syra- cuse, N. ¥., her former home, for burial, THE DEATH List. To relieve the auxicty which seems to prevail in some sections of the country respecting how mapy and who were killed on the night of the fire, or may since have died, the death list is reported as follows;— Rev. a. ESCAPE OF PROEESSOR KERS AND WIFE, One ol tho narrowest escapes trom death was that of J. Hi. Kees, of New York, bis wite aud two ds, They occupied apartments oa the Fourth streot of the sixth floor, At ubout two. A.M. Mrs, Rees was awakened by heart-rending shrieks, and, rousing ber busband, the couple endeav- cored to muke their way througi the ball, Driven back by suffocating smoke and intense heat, they re-enterod therr roo.n, closed the door aud Veutuiator, and rushed to the window. No help was im eight, aud us they made a second attempt to escape by the door the two chambermaids rushed frauticully in with their heads covered, saying that egress by that route was cut ofl, it being impossible to reach the stairs, All tour again rushed to tue Window for wir, (be room by this tumy being flied with smoke Mrs, Rees and one of the girls tamted, but recovered, When all hope bad been abondoned the Skinuer ure escape hove in mgnt, It was raised very slowly, but the fremen succeeded in ascending und rescaimg geverul persous from the filth floor, including one man, who bud let bim- self down trom the story ubove by means ol sheets Ued together, After these were saved the ludder was moved very slowly Into position for the people on Wwe sixth floor, but it only reached as ugh as the windows below, and it was several feet trom the wall, A rope was finally thrown to the Rees window, and a freman, avery brave fellow, was hauled up, Mz. Rees was then let down to the window ledze below. His wile followed, and she was supported on the hurrow ‘ledge unul another fireman, Ed, Thorn, urrived aud ussisted in swinging her to the ladder, This brave man carried the woman who was weak and sick down part of the way. His strength abandoning bim she clung to bis back until additional agsisiance arrived, Professor Rees remained on the fifth story window ledge until bots maids were lowered to tho sidewalk by means of ropes thed around their wa'sts, The women behaved adnur- ably, keeping perfectly quiet and betraying uo alarm, Had it not been for their presence of mind it would not e been possibie tor the firemen Thorn and Kirk to gave them. While the second chumbermaid was being Jowered the rope slipped aud caught Mr, Recs around the neck. Had not the womau reached the ground at that instant the Prolessor would bave been uragged down toa horrible death. He succeeded in freeimyg himseit, however, and Jumped in safety to the ladder, descend- ing preceded by Thorn, who succeeded in supporting him. BRAVE FIREMEN. Whatever fault muy be found with the Fire Depart- ment, the herovs, Thoru and Kirk, and especially te former, deserve great credit for their bravery. Had it not veen for them at least four e irightiul deaths would be recorded, Mr, Rees states that no ularm was given in te part of the vuilding in which bis Jamily was located. He and bis wie are being d for by Mr. and Mra. J, C, Cabot, oid frienus, at No, 2,113 Pine street. There {s no doubt now that the delay in arousing the guests in the hotel was due to deficient arrangements at the office in the Jower story, The annuncintor—a contrivance for alarming inmates in case ct daoger— was out of repair, aud owing to this they were only ned by the noise outside or the kicking in of doors by watchmen aud the firemen who tirst arrivell.
