NEW YORK FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL Great Excitement in the Stock Market—A * Field Day Among the Bears. WHAT THE WRECKERS ARE DOIN Gold 108 1-2 a 105 7-8—Govern- ment Stocks Firm, MONEY 8 A 7 PER CENT ON CALL Watt Street, peoetreee Or reseed Wrpwespay, April L1—U P. x} Gold {s up to 105% on the imminence of 2 Euro- dean war, and stocks are down, some of them disas- srously, partly trom inherent weakness and partly from tho machinations of the wreckers who control them. There has turned out to be more truth than Getion in the reports of yesterday that the Northwestern stocks had been thrown out of loans by some of the city banks, and the verification comes in the fact that Messrs, H. Kennedy & Co,, who have long beon identi- fled with the speculation tn this property, berg unadlo to obtain accommodation elsewhere, wero forced to sell for cash upon an unwilling market, Had umes been better, or had more faith existed in tho socurity Among capitalists, the transfer of certificates into stock might have been accomplished with little los: but existing circumstances being in opposition to these conditions a serious break in prices and a suspension of the above firm naturally followed, On the 17th of November last wo had ovcasion to re- mark of the Northwestern and St, Paul stocks that they “act as though their figures were clothes some sizes too large for present values and they were shrinking them down to fit,” and further, that they were “an incubus upon the bands of holders,” This expression of opinion drew forth an indignant denial from the Northwestern Company, who were much aggrieved at the imputation, At that date the quotation for North- west preferred was 5874 and for the common 347% ; to- day the prices are respectively 411% a 183. As to whether the shares are an ‘*incubus”’ or not, reference can be made to Messrs. Kennedy & Co, Rock Island, which scems to have had some sort of morganatic con- nection with the Northwestern family, even before Gould cyxme in with bis black sheep relationship, is down to 9144 to-day, from 90% yesteraay morning, in pure sympathy. In fact the presence ol the above gentleman in the direction bas been ac- companied with the customary amount of pitch and the inevitable defilement which ensues, Stockholders have been getting out of bad company by skipping out of their shares, thus relieving their minds from appre- honsjon and their pockets irom loss, while they leave the mysterious ‘locas in quo” of the company's 40,000 shares to the solution of more interested parties, The bouleversement of the Western stocks turned things ‘heels over head im a lively manner, but those who thought a sufliciency of evil tor the day had already pecurred were mistaken. The coal stocks, which had been halting between the two opinions of a rise and a Jail, suddenly toppled over as though all doubt as to the proper direction had been settled there and then, and a most serious matter grew out of it, for ist was positively statea that the Dela- ware and Hudson Canal Company had applied for a receiver upon their own account, This news being spread broadcast, for the time being the board was treated to a first rate imitation of a panic, if not ono in reality, during which the price ot Delaware and Hudson fell from 4734 to 36, and Dela- ware and Lackawanna from 5674 to 50, At this point the fright was pnt an end to by an official denial upon the part of the former company ot any steps having been taken on their part for a receivership, and an equal denial from the second that they were financially em- barrassed. ‘This contradiction of the injurious reports turned the course of prices like a flash, and Delaware ‘and Hudson spurted to 41}; and Delaware and Lack wanna to 51/4, and then closed, Western Union, pad- dling its own canoe, so far as Atlantic and Pacific would allow it to do so, was largely dealt in to declining prices, which at the end showed a Joss of 1 per cent ‘on the day’s transactions, All othor stocks, being ‘out of the influence of the tidal wave, were moderately dealt in at figures which grew no better as the day grew older.
