10 NEW YORK ‘HERALD, ‘TUESDAY, APRIL 10, 1877—TRIPLE _ SHEET. Marvin J. Merchaut, Commissioner of Deeds, at No, “OH CROWN OF THORNS” | sme eee 2 Miss Anna Dickinson Weaves One for the New York Critics. ALLEGED PREJUDICE «OF ©THE PRESS, A Combined Assault on the Play and the Player. “HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE ——.” ————— ‘When the curtain fell upon the closing tableau of the ‘play of “Anne Boleyn” last night, at the Eagle Theatre, ‘Miss Anna Dickinson mado ber appearance bebind the foottights, still in tho costume of that {ll-fated queen, aud according to her announceinent procecded to “criticise the critics.” ‘Anna Dickinson,” said she, as she bowed in acknowledgment to the applause which grooted her, “scarcely knows herself before you ina Dionde wig and with a make-up, but let it pass, as she doesn’t wish to trespass further on yourtime, 1 think,” she continued, “that if I have ‘been known for anything among you, and I doubt nota great many men and women who are ore to-night have heard mo on tho lecture platform, - fl am known for anything, 1am known as a defender of the wronged and the oppressod. (Applause.) Canaidly and honestly, 1 know of no more thoroughly ‘wronged person in some respects this night, in this town, than the woman who stands before you.”? Miss Dickinson ‘then proceeded to read extracts from a New York paper of yesterday concerning her pertermance, and said that sho would try to talk of borself as of a person whom she had not known before, “Candidly,” said she, “I think that my efforts and my long years of fuithtul servico— Buccess{ul service before the public—ought to /eurn for me a kindly and generous criticism and Judgment at the bands of intolligont men and women fn whatsvever 1 might attempt. My lie on the plat- form some years ago secmed essentially ended—for one reason, because 1 was so hopelessly broken in health (though it was not necessary fur me to an- mounce that fact to the public) that it was difll- eult for mo to endure the hardships Incidental to trevelling from fitty to one thousand miles per week fas a lyceum lecturer. It is not necessary for me to go o ull the grounds why I came to the stage. Suffice it to say that one year ugo last spring I did go on the _@tage in Boston. I made my appearance at the Globe “Theatre in May last.”’ : SHE KKLATES URR EXPERIENCE IN BOSTON, Jt ad been asserted, Miss Dickinson said, by the Now York papers that she objected to tho criticism of their eritics, That was not so. She objected merely to doliberate falsification, nothing else. She mude her first appearance in Boston, she said, belore 3,000 people, who constituted a not very well disposed audience, since the people who had most love for ber on the latform were the least willing to see her loave it. here was not one among the thousands who had heard her in this country who did uot regret to see form 1or the stage, They did not b perlormance, and her au- Wence was a cold, critical, atirless, discrimi. Miss’ Dickmson declared that shi theatre-goor, and had often travelled throe hundred miles for the sole pur- of witnessing a periormance, and test of a fuccessiul performance had always beon—aud she thought her nearers would tostify that it was a true one—its cordial acceptance by an audionce, Elaborat- jog this point at somo louetn, Miss Dickinson pro- @eeded to declare that she was not present fo defend hor play, The play and its playing would have to stand or tall on their own merits without any word of hers: *‘I am here,” sho sald, ‘in my old character of champion of the truth and of tho oppressed.” (Applaase.) She then re- counted the incidents attendiny the production of her lay in Boston and the disadvantages under which she bored In making ber appeurance there. ‘THK MEASURE OF SUCCESS “I bave the nume, | believe,” she said, “of being a ‘very strong woman, of caring very little whatis said or thought of me, When | came for the first time before the Boston public I came with only four rehearsals of an entirely new piece 1n an entirely new role, and was 80 ‘worn, 80 Jretted, so utterly miserable, thut in the two weeks preceding 1 had lost over seventeen pounds in weight. I had been absolutely without food—sincée I vould not swallow then—tor more than seventy hours.” ‘Miss Dicksngon said that when the curtain rose upor her play that night sho determined to upply her old test to its reception. The curtam was rung up twice at the end of the first act, but she did not permit her- self to call that a success. But when the “curt had been rung up after ¢ of the succeeding acts and fell upon the last with 700 ‘standecs”’ still in their places, and the en- Lire 8,000 people with tears streaming from their eyes rose with thrilling voice to call ber belore the curtain five successive times with shouts and outeries, she suid, this 18 ‘a success, (Applause) Everybody in Boston went home believing she was # success. THE MISCHIEF MAKERS. The local papers the next day noticed the play and ‘the player very favorabiy, ana everybody contiaued to Delieve thev were a success until the New York papers reached the city at five o'clock on the fol- lowing afternoon. They were unanimous in ‘peaking of the performance as “‘utrocious’? and “vile,” and declared that tue débutante could not act, Miss Dickinson repeated that sho did not object to their giving their own opinions, but sne did object to their saying that that Boston audience regarded her as a failure, It did not, very man uod woman went ovt of that house,” said she, ‘knowing that ‘witb all my faults, cradities and manifold matiers to be learned and unlearned I had the elements of what would go to muke a successful actress.” Alter playing for two woeks to a steadily Increasing audience before that “severely criticai, cold, cautious, satirical and superfinely cultivated city of Boston,”’ she went through New Englaud, Managers and papers treated her kindly, and suid if she were not & Success that she was sure to win one, Despite of this the ‘tender critic” of the 7ribune wrote again frome two weeks later sterating bis former false stutement concerning her and her perfurm- ance, without having in the meantime seen he lt was Lot a far and just and honest tuning to do for a critic to elaborate a two column article two weeks alter he had szen an actress play. ‘lt not generous, it was not manly, it was hot just.” (Applause. ) The speaker then read for something like half an hour extracts from a heap of newspaper clippings from New York papers of the date When sho made her appearance in Boston as well as thoxe of last week wien she began to y here. These wore all severely adverse to her acting, and Many of them condemned the piay itself in emphatic terms. Miss Dickingou made u running commentary vf sarcastic wit us she empbasized the more strik. ing passages of coch, and as an offset declared that the Western papers almost upvanimously applauded herseif and the play, and that Heury Watterson vad declared it to be the finest bis- torical drama of modern times, She mentioned a long list of papers which sho said had praised her acting and the play, Sbe read trom a criticiem publisned in the Henao of Tuesday last a passage questioning the propriety, from a roligious stundpoint, of calling the play “A Crown of Thorns.”’ and another extract criticising Miss Dickinson's pro- Dunciation. “I would uot,” suid she, ‘ear to put my , Tehgion and my pronunciation against the bigotry and Drogue of the man who wrote that article.” HER STRUGGLES IN NEW YORK, Miss Dickinson , said she expected, when sho reached New York, to find her old and Preciative lecture audiences, but the papers had | @ wall between her and her old public. | dilated upon the difficulties ander which | the play was produced here, “It was suid,” she continued, with evident emotion and a broken voie, ‘that I fought the papers, that I denounced the critics, that I placed = my- sell wn antagonism to the pavers — and he public, Good inends,”’ she said, pathetically, “what could this one cmull, sick, weak, miserable, crushed, heartbroken woman do in oppusntion to the combined pupers and the bitter prejudice they had surred up against me in this place? 1 did not tight them. God knows I didn’t want to fight them, 1 was almost crushed, but I struggicd on us If will strogglo on, because, huving taken up my work in lite to do, I | put it not down unul I erly full”? ‘This passage wat decliimed with great omphasis and ended 1p what was almost «sob, The audience broke > cheers and applause which lasted for at least a minute, A DEVENCE OP THK DRAMA, Miss Dickinson then entered upon a culogy of the theatre, deciuring that at a time Whon not a newspaper ip the country dared to publish a line against slavery theatres, by piaying ‘The Uctoroon” and “Unele Tom's Cabt aroused public indignation great evil. She referrod to a number of id spoke in terms of high praise of eons they inculcated, 1 were,”’ sho said, ‘to set my lance im rest again to he against abuses, it should not be levelled at the theatres but at the newpapers.” In conclusion she remarked, “I have suid my say in somewhat dis- bn fashion, but 1 think you all understand 1, 4 read what. the New York papers say of my play and then sit in judgment on it; but give Anna Diekinson a chanco with her’ own work, Go and see it, and voll your neighbors to go and see it; listen to itand then if you condemn, An a, Dickinson has not one word to say in opposi- tise Dickinson began hor address shortly before eleven o'clock, and it Was miduight when sho con- cluded, AN UNSUCCESSFUL L BURGLARY.
