THE MORMON QUESTION. THE LEADERS RESPONSIBLE AB THE PILOTS— POLYGAMY THE BUDDER OF THE CHURCH, Wasnixeton, April 7, 1877. To rue Kpiror oy Taz Aenao:— Since Jobn 1. Lee's confession trauspired there has been much discussion in the newspapers on the Mor- mon question—a question that bas lain dormant, un- noticed fora very long time, and which would most likely have continued so had it not been for the con- fession of Lee anu his execution. It 18 too often the case that many of these discussions are written by Persons who have litle, if any, knowledge on the sub- Ject, and who are consequently uot at all trammelied by facts, Tourists, for instance, who have read Bil, Hickman’s book, and who may heve spent two or three days or weeks in Salt Lake City, imagine they have a clear insight into Mormonism. Their statements depend very much on the way in which they have been received, Some denounce the creed, while others, who happen to have received favors at the bands of Brigham Young and influential Mormons, are profuse im their pri and rant about Mormon \brift and industry. Both these classes go to ex. tremes, and 1 dou’t remember ever baving seen ® clear and unprejudiced account of the sect. Thoso who chance to see a little of the polished side of Mormoniem take it for granted that all Mor, mondom is that way while they who cateh a glimpse “behind the scenes’? take a completely different view ofit. Such evidence, being unreliable, is of little worth, Particularly as many of these writers have {requently . Pushed trath aside and built up statements that were more conformable to their preconceived opinions, In the present letter it is neither my purpose to advocato Mormonism nortocry its sudden extermination, but only to present a few rambling ideas us they occur to me. Ihave beon intimately acquainted with Mormon- ism {n Southern Utah aud it is in such districts, re- mote from the influence of travellers, viat tho “re- ligion”’ can be studied fu all its original purity. Mormonism hus been fostered by our government. Why? Because it bas tuken no devisive steps to chuck it, and because at one time, when the Mormons were so hard up they knew not what to do, it sent a large army out to surrender to them rations, wagons, biankets, tents, everything—everyihing necessary to setone-half if not more of the whole Church up in housekeeping. For tnirty years the Mormons have been allowed to prac- Mse their principles of religion unmolested and compar. Atively unknown, For more han thirty years ther missionaries have buen avwork in foreign lands and have brought to our shores and shipped by “hand- tart” across the Plains, to the centre of Mormondom che most ignorant of the ignorant, the most supersti- tious of the superstitious, These people owe allegiance to the Mormon Cuurch—to Brignam Young. They Have not the slightest idea that the United States bas wpything to do with them, and depend upon it they Would do pothing ing the Culed Staten, ney have been jured in'e Mormonism by glowing accounts of tho beautiful homes in “the vuileys in the mountains”? and the fine prospects of certuin salvation. A low, uncultivated mind is not seliesustaining, It gropes about. in darkness till it comes in contact with something to fasten to. Mormonism affords an easy support tor such intellects, und it is eagerly grasped and linked with visions of pleasure and profit op earth in the happy land of Deseret, and eternal blis: in Zion. Still these poor creatures cannot be severely blamed for placing their trust in Mormooism if tuey sincerely believe it, as I think many of them do; for does not the majority of the world place confidence in otnor creeds thut it has no better right to than the Mormon bas to his, The Mormons prove their religion by the Bie and supplement that authority by the “Book of Mormon.” li there is anything wrong ubout Mormonism it lies in the leaders—the teachers. They are the pilots and are responsibie for the ricketty ship. Folygamy is its rudder, Polygamy is a ‘divine institation!’’ lt cannot be abolished vy any buman power, tuey say. Now if polygamy is going to be stopped, lot the goverumont strike it down without ceremony, and then if the vessel sails on well without it, who Shall dare to uplift a hand to sink ber in our land of liberty? We know notning about Mormonism shut is illegal except polygamy, und they huve prac- tised that tor over thirty years, and ms rather curious that any one should’ object at this Inte date, and that, too, alter our consistent government hus honored’ Brigham Young, the great guide and “prophet’’ of tne whole institution. A Mormon—a polygammiat, perhaps traitor—nus been honored by olding the offices of Goveraor aud Director of Indian Alfairs for Utah, Aud now, alter a lapse of more than a quarter ofa century, when te old mun 18 balaaciug his weary lite On the brink of the grave, the press «ries out, “Con vict him—punish him.” Bah! Joho D, Lee is pun- isned, yet thero are a dozen others who deserve execu- tion as mucb, perhaps more, than he, He bad re- pented—there are others who have not, and who laugh At the law from among the jabyrinthiay gorges of the nyon country. They are nol going to expose them- ‘Ives as Lee did. He was kept hidden by the Mor- mons themselves, They did not want him to be taken, because they were atraid of bis confession, should he make one, It was Known for many a year that he was one of the leaders ot the Mountain Meadows murderers, worried by’ his Own imagination to be sure, but safe trom capture be- Cuuse no one was after him. When we think what @ horrible murder that was, ana that ut. this me only one of the participants hus sufered for it, it is very nice to howl for “vengeance,” ates Wait another quarter century. Jobn Lee could have been cuptured ten years a at least. Five years ago the party I was with would have engaged to deliver him, But the old man was always kind to everyone; anu had it not been that we knew him to be steeped in innocent blood we should have remembered him with some pleasure. His death at the banas of the authorities at least cua- vinces the Mormons of something they were tnchned to doubt betore—that they are citizens of the United States and subject toitsiaw Therefore, if it was a failure as a punishment it was a success as a lesson. ‘It that lesson could now be emphastzed by the execu- tion of Hnighi, Higbee and others us guilty 1t would never he forgoticu, Nephi Johnson, woo acted as In- dian interpreter at the time of the massacre, und who now lives at Johnson, twelve miles from Kanat, should be ceiled ou for bis testimony, Without doubt it would prove most valuabie. Ho bas “kept out of the way’? becanse he does not caro to neglect his crops and Jose bis time. Possibly the proper authori- ies could induce him to take up his residence in Beaver tor a jew months. ‘Jim’? Man- gum, at tho Paria, is another bird that would Jook well in a suitable cage, Une o! our bright sheriils uitempted to capture him once, but Jim was too spry for bim, and the Sherif! was politeiy requested, by the muzzie of a “six shooter,” to go to his home, ‘This be aid with ulacrity, Iwill venture to assert also that there ure numbers of Mormon cenviemer jn Southern Utah who would rest uneasily if they thought the gav- ernment was taking an interest in murders, Ifany- thing is to be done With guilty Mormons it ts high time that proceedings were beguv. Briguam, the sbrewd d ave, 18 paving the way for his successor, Brigham , Who is very like bis riustrious (?) sire, and who, ike him, will run the little theocracy for pleasure and profit, clutching with a firm grasp the golden reins that fuide the samtly serfs. And these serfs—simple- minded—bveheve that the Church of Jesus Christ of ter Day Saints is the Church, and there are num- bers of thein who would sacrifice their ull for ite ben- efit. They are terribly oppressed and do not perceive tho oppression. Therefore pity them and pardon them. Pity the poor women. Many of them—most of them, bave no aiternativo but to piod along thetr weary road, y, always Under a cheerless sky, and with era burst of the sunshine of love to lighten their saa, sad hearts. ORESTES, A MORMON WARRIOR, {From the Salt Lake Tribune, March 29.) Lieutenant Generali Daniel H. Wells now looms up into prominence again, Another of his blooa- Wirsty orders comes to light alter lying unknown to history for twenty years. He seems to be after tho tonmsters (not a warlike class generally) and he wants them all slain, “President Young advises that they should all be killed.” Giud tidings of grewt joy, this mandate, with surprising variations, But whether the teameters of emigrant train, or attached to General Jobn- ston’s army, we are leit hopelessly in the dark. But these Latter Day executioners believe in doing their work up thoroughly. ‘Every precaution should ve taken,’ says this doughty Mormon General- issimo, ‘to see that not one escapes.’’ Byron wanted the whole female persuasion to bave one month, so that he could kis the whole delightful vex. It would have greatly facilitated operations if the entire uncon- verted human race had possessed but one throat, so that at one puss with the knife ull the Lora’s enemies could have been extinguished, 1) will not be inoppor- tune to produce a somewhat similar manitesto issued by the same fire-caving militiaman six months later, October 4, 1857, It runs as follows On ascertaining the route of the vo some unbelieving proceed at once to annoy them in every possible way. To Tuk Epitor oy THe Sax Francisco Cali:— A lending article of your Sunday's issue (March 25) says in relation to the Mountain Meadows massacre :— “Itis notso clear that the bead of the Church sanctioned the crime.’’ A natural conclusion to any one not rosi- dent in Utah; am unnatural one to any familiar with the workings of the Mormou Church, 1 was to Utab at the time of the massacre, and forced to remain dur- ing the reign of terror which followed, whem the Ter- ritory Was under Mormén martial !aw—a time when Mormons themselves, tu their most secret moments, by their housebold hearths, beut their heads and spoke in Whigpers with bated breath, if they harbored @ thought of pity for the victims of that fiendish butchery. A NEVADA VIEW OF BRIGHAM’S GUILT. {From the Virginia (Nev.) Enterprise, March 28.] We notico that many of our exchanges are oulling for the indictment, trial and conviction of Brigham Young, Damo, Haight and the rest who were princi- Pals in or accessories to the Mountain Meadows massa- cre, Wedo net expect that any such convictions will ever be had, We do not believe that Lee would huve ever suflered had not Brigham Young deserted him, Dame and, we believe, Haight, were indicted at the same time, but for some reason the cases were dis- missed against the others, That reason, doubtless, ‘was an understanding that Lee should be sacrificed, and that for tho sacrifice the others should not be mo- lestea. Were Brighum Young arraignod ana convidted werelieve that be could successiully apveal for pro- tection to the treaty made betwoeh himself and tho Commissioners of the United States and confirmed by the Washington authorities, which treaty led to the withdrawal from Utab of the army under Albert Sid- ney Jonnston. We do expect that the coniession of Lee will work pbysical hardships upon the heads of the Mormon Chuich. Its chie! use will be to open the eyes of the world to the enormities which are practised 1n Utah under the name of religion ; to show to the weuk-minded and credulous that the thing called the Mormon Church 1s but a trick intended by the lew to gain power und wealth through ministering to the lusts ol brutal men #pd througo appeals to the fears and to the faith of igoorant women. We think the dreadiul story may also induce Congross to dis- franchise ail Mormons, even as other convicted felons are disfranchised, and to partition Utah out amon, adjacent ‘Territories, ‘The existence of the pretended, Churen rests solely upon a substratum of ignorance, and will fall of itsown weight so soon as its members are generally educated, In the meantime the people of the United States ought, in self. + and in justice, to demand that Utuh be Polandized and that no Mormon should be permitted to exercise any of the wepownee STEAMSHIPS. ~~ MATL “STEAMERS New ae th eexsrowy AND shat 3 ‘sp, CITY OF HkUssees City oF or BERLING rom Cabin, 880 and $100. “gold. on favorable terme, “eoranes 28 “currency, Dratts Bt lowest ratos, maidelii pa. erooms, emoking and bath rove DA 15 and 83 ion ee RES Vor, WESTERN 8TBAMSIE; ATO hiisTOL 1B Bast ve follows = anmauon’s {rem pier ast Kiver aon April 17 cy NITED state HAE, LIN: STAM TO QUEENS. ‘N AND LIVERPOOL, bs valine on 'T IDAHO...
