FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Active and Stronger. GOLD 1047-8 A105. Government Stocks Firm and Railroad Bonds Generally Higher. Money 8 1-2 a 41-2 Per Cent on Call. — + __ Wart Street, Tuvrspay, April 5—6 P, } ‘Tho market, which was at the boiling point two days ago, has fallen back to te of simmer which scarcely Fealtzes the amount of hot water that was then throat- entog. It apoaks well tor the condition of tho street that so few operators met witha scalding, and it speaks volumes for the innate strength of a: market which so rosolutely resisted a fall and so quickly responded to a rise, 1t is trae that the bears are to be credited with lending thelr efforts to stop an impending disaster, but ‘the sharp recoil which has followed seems to be duo to some latent power which implies a greater feoling of security in present values than was supposed to exist, No doubt a good deal of this has grown out of the im- pression that the protracted decline has been greatly gue to an artificial pressure upon the part of the bears, that the slowly roviving trade of the coun- try 18 antagonistic to further depression, and that a renewed effort will be made upon the part of the trunk railways to keep the peace, and as a consequence im- prove the market prices of their shares. Regarding this latter point, great and apparently unnecessary Teticence has marked the action of the railroad presi- dents in keeping the result of their deliberations from the public, yet, acting more upon surmise than upon ‘facts, it hus come to bo believed that a satisfactory arrangement bas been accomplished. _ Unforvunately the railways have a bad way of break- ing contracts almost soon as they aro formed, pro- ‘vided they are not made to fit; and in view of the slip up in the December one, the public is not to be blamed for regarding any fresh effort in that direction with ‘the eyo of suspicion. A further intusion of strength was imparted to the market by the meeting of coal representatives, who have at last wakened up to the truth of the policy that a restricted demand requires a proportionately restricted production, The committee appointed to suggest a plan for the Improvement of the coal trade recommend substan- tially that the production be limited to the amount of ‘8,000,000 tons for the year 1877, the same to be divided among the several companies according to a scnedule suggested in the report; also that a monthly allot- ment of tonnage be assigned to each, and that a plan be devised to provide for adequate security against any Jutorest shipping over its proper quota, The last clause is certainly not very complimentary tothe degree of faith which the compunies place one in another, but as the agreement isa sort of family matter, they have probably gauged the amouné of slipperiness to be at- tributed to cach, ‘Thero was no particular significance to be attached to the market to-day beyond a steady firmness, which, if itdid not materially advance prices at cast held them Btrongly throughout the day. ‘THE SALES TO-DAY. ‘The sales of active stocks to-day aggregated 230,867 shares, of which the priucipal were distributed as fol- lows:—Delaware, Lackawanna and Western, 43,400; Lake Shore, 39,600; Michigan Central, 30,400; Milwau- ke and St. Paul preferred, 6,400; New Yoric Central, 15,600; Pacific Mail, 16,600; Western Union Telegraph, 62,306.
