A LETTER FROM GENERAL WASHINGTON AC- KNOWLEDGING THE POWER OF LOVE. In a collection of rare and valuable autograph letters which will bo sold py Bangs & Co., this afternoon, we find the accompanying letter written by General Wash- ington at the age of twenty-six and never betare made public, Tho present owner purchased it in England some years ago for the sum of £15, where it was prob- ably taken by members ot the Fairfax family of ginia, Tho letter ia addrogsed to Sarah Fairiax, at Belvoir, This lady wasa Miss Cary, to whom Wash- ington at One time offered his hand, but was refused for his friend and comrade George Wiliam Fairfax. Irving asserts that it was a sistor of Mra, Fairfax, Miss Mary Cary, afterward Mrs. Edward Ambler, We have the authority of Mra, Constance C, Harrison, a descendant of Lord Fairfax, who says ina paper called ‘A Little Centennial Lady,” published tu Scribner’s Monthly of July last, that Sally Cary, Mrs, Fairfax, was the laay for whom Washtogton had a tenderness, Mrs. Harri. son says:— lv is fair to soy that papers which have never been sb tothe pubic sct ibis question beyond a doubt, ra George Willam Fairfax, the object of Geoxse Washington's gariy and pass nate love, lived to an advanced age tn at, ngland, widowed, childless and utterly infirm, pon her death, at the age of eighty-one, letters, stitl in possession of the Fuirtax family, were tound among her effects, showing that Washington bad never forgotten the influence of bis youth/ul disappointinent. It is hardly provable that Washington means to ex- press bis love for Mra, Custis, to whom he alludes here, for her husband was then living—in tact, did not dic until twenty odd years after the date of this letter, For the matter of that, Mrs. Pairtax’s busband did not dic untit 1787, The following letter ts, without doubt, one of those letters which Mrs, Harrison declares wily “got this question beyond a doubt,”’ It will be found very interesting, ag it shows Washington in quite a new light. SCENES ON BOARD THE FRISIA A Young Western Prima Donna Among the Party. ——— Ina recent number of the Heratp there was given an outline of Dr. Ebell’s plan for “study tours’? to Europe tor young ladies, and an account of the prepare ations for the departure of what may not Inappropre ately be called the roving seminary. Yesterday oftere noon the first class, composed of fifteen ladies from all parts of the country, lett on board the Frisia, of the Hamburg steamship line. The occasion was marked by unusual jollity, a great many of the friends and relatives of the fair tourists having d>me to see them off, The grand cabin was fairly submerged under the magnificent floral offerings, which wero made addi- tionally delightful to the eye by the choice exotic fruits, such as lusctous grapes and golden oranges, that peeped out from between the lovey flowers. As it bappened, there was an unusual preponderance of lady passengers on board the Frisia quite apart from the travelyng scholars, and never waa there seen such an amount of farowel: kissing and eme bracing and champagne drinking and general jollifi- cation, But tho Frisia took out not only an unde sually heavy burden of femate loveliness, but the great ost number of baUies ever seen on a European steamer, Dr. Easton, the Now Orleans baby lover, who re ny the possession of half a dozen dark babies, but craved for 1 fair blue-eyed one to such an extent that he car- ried one off the other day, would bave been blissful on board the Frisia, for blue-eyed, yellow baired babies yaughed and beamed and giggled and crowed from every corner of the noble ship. THY TRAVELLING CLASS. But the cynosure of all eycs were the ‘study tours ists,” who were going abroad to sevk instrugtion at the casties of the Khino, in the orauge groves of Italy, o@ the boulevards of Paris, on the mountain peaks of Switzerland and, maybe, even at the brink of Vesuvius? criter. | ‘The following are the names of the tair fife teen :— Mrs, Edward B, Church, San Mateo, Cal. ; Miss Emma C. Of course the great fear of ull the fair students was whether they should be seasick or not. Would it be well to eat much or little? That was their great topic of discussion, but Dr, Ebell and uung Mr. Richard, son of the he apt of the Hambur; ine, soon svothed their anguish in this respect uotil the mujestic steamer weighed anchor, and amid the farewell shouts and hand kisses and fluttering of-hand- kerehtels of the great crowd on the pier, forged slowly but impressively out of her ship, THE PLAN OF TRAVEL, The pupils procecd directly to Berlin, where they study until June 30, when the summer vacation be. gins, On Saturday, June 30, they leave for Dresden, seeing its sights in carriages for threo days, and on Tuesday, July 3, thoy travel through Saxony, Switz erlund abd Prague, Alter visiting the cathedrals und paiaces of Prague they journey ulung the banks of the Danube to Vienna, Aiter spending three days amid the gayeties ot the German Paris they go through the romantic Sommering Pass to Adelsbery, where they inspect tho greut cave, “illuminated for the occasion with 18,000 burners, vesides several magnesium lights, producing an effect indescribably grand.’” ‘Then wiong the shores of tho Adriatic to Venice, whose antiquities are visited in open gondolas for four days, one day in Verona, two in Mian and thence te Lake Como, The lauies take boat tur s ugang, on the luke of that name; then go trom Lugano or Barese by carfiages to the shores of Lake Maggiore, and thence by steainboat the length of the luke to Buvouo; from Baveno by car- riages through tho Simpion’ Pass, night on the sumt:t of the pass, the Hos trow Sumplon along the winding mountain road, ov bridges, through galleries and tunnels and under watertuils, down into the Rhone Valley, by the Rhone to Brigne, for iunch to Martigney; from Martigney in small mule carts vp the zigzag mountain path over- looking the Rhone Valley, 10 tho valley of Chamounx, by Mont Blanc, and two days are speat in excursions in the valley, where Miss Wixom will have un appro- priate opportunity of singing the “Vale of Chamou- x?
