THE GREAT WRESTLE. Fighting for the Second Fall Until Daylight. A “DRAW” AGREED UPON. Both Men Badly Bruised and Exhausted, The Hega.p report of yesterday morning left tho Grwco-Koman wresilers, William Miller and Thiebeuld Bauer at 1h. 40m, A. M, im the act of retiring for a brief rest, in order to be rubbed with towels and other- Wise attended to, Each was greatly fatigued and un- able to obtain any advantage, The contest was re- Rewed sixteen minutes later by order of the referee, and continued with two short rests until Sb, 22m, A. M., when a ‘‘draw” was agreed upon, AVTKK THK REST. Sxconp Bour.—Both men appeared im the field at Uh, 56m, A. M., somewhat refreshed. They at once begam active business without the usual preliminary sparring, Bauer obtaiming a back hold on Miller, but wus unuble to throw him, A break was wade, then a rush for an opening, and during the tussle the piucky Frevehman secured ® severe neck grip, which made the Australian’s prospects look decidedly blue, but he managed to slip down out of harm’s way, with Bauer lying at full length on his body. Resuming an erect position hot work followed, both meo gceking the coveted advantage with 4 tinge of anger. Bauer seomed desirous of Jorcing the fighting, and Once more obtained a back hold on Miller, by which he threw him a burster on the ground. Yet Miller managed to fall on bis face, where he lay with arms and legs spread to their utmost length, Bauer repoat- edly liited the Australian giant by sheor strength and attempted to hurl him over, but the task, being too diMcult, was abandoned. In this hard ground straggle Buuer smartly rapped Miller on the left shoulder und again on tho right, and with a sudden twist essayed to pull him over for tho fall; but the Frenchman’s hands slipped at the critical instant und the effort was fruit- less, Again to their feet there eusued heavy sparring for an opening. Bauer assumed the offensive, and finally, with the quickness of lightuing, caught Miller round the neck, the embrace trightening the latter, who exerted all hia remaining strength to free himself from the uncomfortable position, This he managed to do in afew seconds, when he turned the tables by getting a similar lock on Bauer; but the latyer eseayed the back grip, and upset all the Australian’s calculations by sending Lim a thumper to the carpet, and in the descent, or, just be- fore Miller fell, Bauer got the bead of his burly com- petitor in chancery—a terrible fx, With the power ofa vice the Frenchman squeezed the neck of the other until he was red in the face; but still the latter kept his shoulders and hips away from the carpet, Finally, witha terrific struggle, Muller succeeded in extricating bimself {rom the dilemma, when both rose to their feet. Again Bauer threw Miller by the waist hold on his stomach, and ho fell so heavily it shook bim terribly, Atier partly rolling over each other several times Miller twisted Lis antagonist into 3wo perilous positions; but tis strength was un- equal to the occasion, as Bauer's superior scieuce was now more upparent than ever. In fact, Miller although he made the attempt repeatedly, wus unable yo lit Bauer more than a few inches from the carpet orto keep him in a dangerous position, and was at lust obliged to drop bim. They vigorously sparred for the next opportunity, when again erect, Bauer ob- taining the advantage by securing anotner neck lock on Miller, when the latter succeeded in getting the Waist lock, Neither proved of udvantwaye, as both ‘were easily broken. Thus far the wrestimy, since the Test of sixteen minutes, was the best of ihe night, as It had been severe work throughout. Both men had been greatly weakened, in nearly the same proportion, but Miller looked the more used up, as the bandling ho was receiving trom his wily compeulor was of the worst posaibio churacter. Each showed signs of so- vere bruises, their flesh in many places being | er up im red paiches and blotches. More ‘wisting ensued, when, with terrible carnestness, Miller gota back neck lock on Bauer, and, using bis ehest advantageously, pulled him bodily oo his shoulder, the Frenchman turning a complete somer- sault, It seemed to the spectators,‘many of whom tii] remained, that the end of the bout was pear; but ich Was Dot the case, as the ready Bauer wriggled wondrously in failing, and only touched the ground on oue sido, thus saving the full. Hud Miller possessed the strength and agility to iollow up the advantage gained the second bout would inevitably have been ue- ‘eided in his favor, but these necessary aids were not at his bidding. ‘The Freacaman’s tactics at this stage received agreat cheer. He formed a bricge with Lis head, neck and leys, which pretty performance saved him ana prevented the fall sought by Miller. In break- doy the Australian’s lock Bauer seemed to have injured his hands, und it was some minuies bdeiore he re- covered their full use. Tou minates of quiet work new occurred, when Miller obtained # body lock on bis opponent, but the latter raised him up by the arms and broke it, RESTING AGAIN. A rest of three or four minutes was agreed upon at 2h. 3om. A, M., during which both men were thoroughly rubbed by their attendants. Upon the resumption o1 work Bauer seemed more @pxious than the other, und immediately essayed a vicious neck hold, but ‘he tailed to grip, whereupon there was much fencing, A neck hold was finally secured by Bauer, and for several seconds it seemed shat Miller must go down on his back; but the latter, Appreciating the perilous nature of the situation, made & supreme effort to wrest himself trom the grasp of the Frenchman, and finaily succeeded. It was a nar- row escape. More sparring for chances ensued, the Frenehman getting the best of it, as he wrenchod sillier down on bis breast, While in this position Bauer lifted his big opponent in hig urms, and suddenly re- Jaxing bis grip whtie Miller was suspended tn air, let him tall bead downward in a way that would lave erushed the sknil ard broken the neck of au ordinary mortal Miller quickly recov and was on bis feet like tho proverbial *‘cat”’ with nine lives, when both men again clasped bands and wrists and fought for the hext opportunity to catch a throwimg hold. The men were getting weaker every minute, the Australian sul- fering the Worst irom the heavy strains «nd ground thumps he had received. Ho 1ooked strangely serious, ‘and seemed to lack vin and evergy. BREATHING TMK sh. Bom. A. M,, by consent of tho umpires, ordered a rest of ten miiutes, but this in- Croused to twenty-four minutes, when bown walked into the arena much relreshed, Bauer, as usual, was the first vo secure a lock, avout the neck; vut Miller broke Mt, when, With spurring, several minutes was consumed. Then the Australian obtained @ body hold on the Frenchman; but it was broken by a pretty spring, Mil- fer being (00 Weak to resist. Bauer turnod the iables by securing a back hold, which brought Miller to the ground; whereupon ensued a series of terribie strug- gles, Bauer showing greater pluck avd skill, yotin- suflicient strength to keep his oppovent trou squirm. Ing out Of the tight place be Was in, yet he did not re- gain his treedom uutil well squeezed, Now Miler Caught Bauer about the waist and breught the iauer to his knees, but there the advantage cvased. The Frenchman forced Miller’s hold apart, as there ap- peared ouly litie strength leit in the Lunds of the Aus- tralian, Headwork and fencing then occupied over ball an hour beiore another lock was secured, this ne the luck falliug to Miller, who could not utilize it | before broken by Bauer. i A “SDRAW"? AGREED UPON, i At 6h, 16m. A. M., the Frenchinan suddenly | clinchea the neck of Miller and furcod him to the ground, almost squeezing the breath oul ot his body; but the Australian managed to slip the grip aod Bauer went under, but the other could do nothing und the | Frenchman at once got on bis tee. Muck sparring followed, and the three hundred spectators that suili “stuck 1b out? Were Unanimous in the opinion that’ bue or both of the men must soon desist trom sheer exhaustion, And +o it proved, a#at 6h, 22m. A. M. ihe umpires and principals, upon consultauion, agreed je make the match a draw, and at ob. 30m,, with day- ‘ight streaming through the windows, the reterce, Professor William Clark, $0 ordered, when the wen, weary and worn, aud stratned and bruised, left the Heid and retired to their dressing rooms to prepare | for their homes, ‘This wrestling match is the longest on record, None Dut athletes of the most extraordinary pluck and en- durance could have stood up under the wrenching and twisting. the thumping agaiust the ground and tue constant expenditure of strength requited to fight for 6. 30m. tor atall, If there ure any laurels worth wearing in the result these belong to Bauer, who gained the first fail and throughout exbibited the greatest science, BAUER IN TROUBLE, Before Bauer could dress he received an unwelcome visitor in the (orm of a deputy sherif, wo arrested him upon @ bench warrant in a civil suit BURGLARY ON BROADWAY. Very early yesterday morning the storovof Mr, Pike, the optician, at No, 518 Brondway, wus entered by burglars. Officer Maher, who was on post at tho time, discovered that they had made a large hole through the panel of the door and throagh the zine plating which lined it, On forcing bie way in he Jound the door littered with optical and seientifie tn- firuments, and he at once had the owner sent jor. H. Captain's Clerk—Joseph L, Galvin, BARNACLES, As you have been informed vy telegraph, orders have been received to send all the monitors except the Dictator to the Savaunah River to anchor in fresh water, for the purpose of removing the accumulation of oysters, barnacies, grass and other marine parasites attached to their botioms. ‘The rapidity with whieh iron bottoms are fouled in these waters is something warvelious, Oysters large euough to afford toleravly fuir eating are found in buge beds upon the monitora’ hulls, and with the other queer muterial gathered thereon it 1s easy to see that the vessels’ speed 18 very seriously injured. In tact, as is trequently the cuse, the vessels’ speed is reduced by these wmpedimenta to the very minimum, It is for the purpose of removing this prodigious guthering that the ships aro seut into in the absence of dock tactites, to scrape . ‘The monitors will doubtless be able to ascend the Savannah to @ po.nt within a couple of miles of the city, Where the water is perfectly tres! ‘This will give the citizens of that beautitul city a closer sight of these marine monsters than they ever enjoyed before, and 10 amore agreeable manner. A large bum- Ver of visitors will doubtless avail themselves of tne opportunity to visit and inspect (ne craft that made 4 grout name for themselves in the rocont ‘‘unpleasant- ness?” The Lebigh, Lieatonant C. 1. Hutchins command- ing, wil probably Jeave to-morrow for her new uncuor- uge, to be followed by the Catskill, Mahopac, Maphat tun, Sangus and Ajax. It is expected that they wil remain in the river until possibly the Ist of June, but certainly bot up to the advent of the sickly season, as too long @ sojurn in that river would bo exceed- ingly dangerous (0 ali hands on board, Passed Assistant Engineer Jeflerson Brown, of the Dictator, has been detailed to take charge of the machinery of the Lehigh, and Eusigns H. S. Waring, of tbe Now Ham, shire, and William Winder, of the Dictator, will asaii Licutenant Hutchins, It will require at least three weeks lo get the monitors into tueir new position, in consequence of lack of men to handle them in ail their departments, OUT oY ComMIssioN, It_is reported that the steam sloop Powhata Captain J. H. Russell, ts shortly to arrive bere, for the purpose of towing the monitor Dictator to New York, woere she will be placed out of commission. She needs very extensive repairs, as she has been very long in service, betore sue can be regurded ag an efticient sea- going slip. Sho is the largest monitor afloat, and with new tron deck beains, new boilers, &c., would be an extremely formidable vessel, if armed with improved heavy rifle guns. Her engines are immensely power- ful, and her speed, when everything was in order, was just that required of a fighting vessel or a terrific ram. In either capacity she would prove a most dangerous and formidablo adversary oven of the best iron-clads of foreign navies. THE HARTPORD. The flagship Harttord, Captain Luce, bearing the flag of Kear Adiniral Treuchurd, commanding the North Atlantic Station, is likely to look im at this port, on ber way to the Wost Indies, within a week or ten days. Aller her departure th harbor will present almost “an aching void” to the searchers alter ournavy. The New Hampshire, flagship of Commedore Clitz, and the coal bulk Pawnee will be monarchs of the bay, if tho Dictator should leave us, The summer months, which geuevally mark the return of the cruisers to this har- bor, will again give it a lively and cbeertul appearance, which it sadly lacks in the absenco of men-ol-war, FUNERAL OF INSPECTOR SPEIGHT. ‘The body of Police Inspector Speight Iny all day yes- | terday at bis home in Carmansville, where many old | friends of his calied to express their regrets to his be- reaved family.
