BOARD OF EDUCATION. ‘HE REDUCTION OF TEACHERS’ SALARIES TO BE MADE UP WHEN THE FINANCIAL CONDITION OF THE DEPAKTMENT WILL PERMIT IT. ‘The Board of Education met yesterday and trans- acted the following business :— A communication was read from the City Superin- tendent, Mr. Kiddie, in which ho stated that thirty. eight schools had been examined; number of classes examined, 437; number of classes found to be excel- tent, 230; good, 171; lair, 35, Average number of pu- pils on register is 116,098; average attendance, 108,495. Among the miscellaneous communications resolution offered by Commissioner Vanderpoel, rel ing to the custom of permitting agents for publications of various sorts to solicit subscriptions from the teachers during schoo! hours, aud of allowing the salo of confectionery, traits and toys. It asked that the Committee on By-la' Elections and Qualifications be requested to make inquiry concerning the practices and, ifdeemed necessary, from the information ob- tained, to report to the Board a suitable bylaw pro- hibiting them, and tnat the trustees and principals of schools be advised that it is desirable that such use of the school and school premises, or any other use of them incompatible with the business of instruction should be at once aboli-hed, The resolution was re- ferred to the Committee on Bylaws, ‘rhe Finance Committee submitted a report making Ab apportionment of moneys from the Stato fund umong the ward schools and corporate schools for the year 1877. The sum appropriated to the ward schools is $1,009,185 39; Normal schools, $26,318 48; nautical school, $1,148 52; colored schools, $8,3! corporate schools, $107, 199 46, making a total’ of $1,152,158 35, The sum of $4,198 was transferred from the reserve | tund to add to the former appropriations for corporate Schools. The report was adopted, | Commissioner Walker introduced a resolution ask- ing the Bylaws Committee whether the present method of restraining teachers from inflicting corporal pun- ishment ought not to be moditied, and if so to report such moditications. The Committee on Teach to whom was relerred the communication from the City Superintendent re- porting Miss Minnie Cohen, assistant teacher in Primary Department of Grammar School No 25, for a Violation of the bylaw relutive to corporal punishment, reported that they did not feel warranted in recom- mending a stronger punishment than that she be rep- rimanded by the City Superintendent.
