“FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, A Dull Market, Clos- ing Weak. GOLD 104 5-8 A 104 8-4. Investment Securities Gen- erally Steady. Money Abundant at 2 a 8 Per Cent on Call. ——— Tauxspay, March 15-6 P, M, ‘The interminable railroad squabble which, like Ban- quo’s ghost, will not “‘down,’’ but resists all attempts to ‘lwy’’ it, sprang up afresh to-day to the detriment of values, ‘This quarrel is becoming a public nuisance, and did ft occur in a physical shape would be speedily abated by the police, Happening, as tt does, to be a wrangle among sapient Managers and opinionated freight agents, it simply as- sumes tie proportions of a scuffle among school boys, aud merits the puoisbment due to its puerility in the shape of a tool’s cap and belis, There is a more serious phage, however, which the managers of these com- petting roads seem to ignoro entirely, and that lies in the disturbance of values, which scares away would-be Jnvestors and alarms positive stockholders, ‘The story to-day is that the Lake Shore peopie have beon playing sharp on their passenger rates, in connec- tion with commissions paid to agents, and with refer- ence to a settlement of local fares between the Central atid Hudson and Erie roads, which would be likely to miscarry if the advance in through rates should be ad- hored to. Acting upon some such story of disagree- ment tho bears sold Luke Shore down from 6134 to 6044, and left it there at the close. Central and Hudson was influenced prejudicially, as a matter of course, though 3 percent marked tho de- cline, the stock selling, as it did, at 947% at tho close, with dividend of 2 per cent off. ‘The Granger stocks remained firm during the day, St. Paul preterred on small dealing showing much firm- ness onghe better showing of earnings as lately mado. These ite hkely to come still better for a week or two more, last year’s business being comparatively slim at this period, In April, however, the meagre earnings of this year will come in strong contrast with the heavy ones of last year, and are likely to show an important diminution, Michigan Central, though comparatively dead to speculative attention, was not impervious to the rate-cutting influ- ence of the trunk lines, and suffered in unison. So did Burlington and Quincy and Chicago and Alton, not for the same reazon, but for fears growing out of Gould’s combination of the Union Pacific, Nartuwest- ern and Rock Island roads, which is considered to be antagonistic to their welfare. The worst of the matter ig, that the eharos of these securities, coming upon the market as they do from the strong boxes of investors, betray @ want of confidenco in properties which have hitherto been deemed irreproachable, and by inference cast a suspicion upon the best stocks of the list. The coal stocks, for a wonder, developed considera- able strengta, dealings being lees than for a day or two back, probably from the fact that operators are waiting the issue of the coal sales before making an active demonstration either one way or the other.
