Se ae FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. The Stock Market Quiet and Steady. GOLD 105 1-8 A 105 1-4. Investment Securities Gen- erally Firm. Money Easy on Call at 2 a3 Per Cent. WALL STREET, } Wepxxspar, March 7—6P, M. Im point of duration a movement in stocks may be compared to what is ordinarily known as a ‘‘spell”’ of Weather, and which is popularly supposed to be em- braced within the compass of three days. To-day, being the third of the series, it was time to expect a toning down of activity as well as of strength, and Watchful bears who take ‘‘sights” at the market and work out speculative latitades and longitudes with the dexterity of a first class navigator were gratified late {no the afternoon by an array of figures that expressed lower prices right through the list, Earlier in the day the laugh had been first on one side of the mouth and then on the other, in keeping with the course of the market as it wavered between better and worse, being “everything by starts and nothing long.”” At thevery opening the tendency was decidedly upward, Delaware and Hudson being regarded as a test case which woald give the cue to the rest of the list, and in this instance it did so by smartly leading the way. So tar the application for a receiver has rather improved the security than otherwise, since the complaint is re- garded to be as ‘thin’? as the complainant himself, and since the Judge appears to have carried off the pa- pers with a wink in bis eyo suggestive of an adverse nod to the rash petitione! There were no lasting Qualities in the rise, however, and the market was soon on the down grade, to be followed in turn by another rally and # subsequent decline, which landed prices at a lower level than at the opening. Western Union had something to do with this, the eternal mystery which hangs around the stock attaching to-day to the monthly meeting of the Executive Committes, 1t was not tobe ascertained whether this meeting had been held or not, and it was not until nearly the close of the session that it was defl- nitely stated that the committee had met and adjourned without recommending the expected 134 per cent quarterly dividend. There appears to be no question that the requisite tunds have been earned, and if no action were taken, as represented, it is prob- ably because a sharp contest is apprehended with tho rival company, and it is thought wiser to keep the sinews of war in the treasurer's strong box than to divide them up between stockholders’ pockets, The publication of the Union Pacific Railroad’s report for 1876 was made an excuse dor carrying the price up tram 7134 to 72%, from which it foil back 1072 The “trail of the serpent” is so distinctly marked in the variations of this fancy that it is rather a warning against than an Invitation to meddle with the stock at all, The gold room advanced to 105%, partly due to covering of shorts, partly to some heavy transactions in the new 43¢ percents and partly to the action in tho Benate, whereby the happiness of President Hayes’ political family is threatened with disturbance, THR BALES TO-DAY.
