THE NORTH ATLANTIC SQUADRON, HONORS TO THE DEAD ADMIBALS—A GRAND RUSSIAN ENTERTAINMENT ON THE CORVETTE ASCOLD—MOVEMENTS OF VARIOUS VESSELS— THE TRAINING SYSTEM, Ac. Pont Rorau, 8. C, Last week was both a busy and noisy one tor this usually quiet harbor, In the tirst place, for three con- secutive dayé, @ rear admiral’s salute was fired at noon, in minute guns, by the flagship New Hampshire, in honor of the memory of Kear Admirals Charles Wilkes, James Alden and Theodorus Bailey, re- apectively, all the vessels in the squadron having haif- masted their colors, The Russian corvette Ascold, Captain Tirtoft, very couteously flew bis flag at half- Mast on all the occasions. He was good deal sur- prised at and inquired the cause of so many funeral Donors in succession, it being almost unparalleled for 60 many high officers to die so closely to each other. On Washington’s Birthday the squadron was dressed in flags, the Russian corvette displaying the American ensigos at her mastheads, aud at noon a national salute of twenty-one guns was fired from tho New Hampshire and the Ascold, awaking the echoes of the harbor in grand style. On Wednesday last the captain and officers of the Ascold gave an elegant entertainment to the officers of our squadron and some friends trom Beaulort. Qaite ® large number of ladies, officers’ wives aud others, graced the very charming and brilliant affair. Our Russian hosts bad bven to great trouble in canopying the quarter deck with the flags of different nations, giving it the appearance of a huge marquee, On all sides were pots of flowers, stands of the curious Span- tsh bayonet plant, trailing vines, deautiful masses of mos and branches of hip and the holly, Great ertistic taste was display the arrangement of these decorations, the materials of which were found in the woods of the islands in she neighborhood of the anchoi Tho buge rifled guns glistened like silver, and the carriages shone like mirrors, while the rigging aud ropes wore as neat, clean and orderly as could possibly be. Certuimly outside of the canopy of the quarter deck as well, no ship iu all its appointments could have made a more strikingly Sttractive show. Oue could see that the officers and men Were every inch seamen and took the greatest pride in their ship, Alter tho guests, who were received at the the commander and his officers, the ship admiring the beautilul decorations, inspecting tomary Russian su koska tosharpen their appetites, the lunch was an- nounced, aod all bunds were seated at along table ranged ulohy the port side of the quarter deck. lam sorry L cannot recall the various dishes of the loug menu, tor the hist comprised some rare aod delicious ones, peculiarly Russian, which appealed. to the taste of all, ‘fhe cuisine was admirable and the wines excellent. ‘loasts were drank in honor of tho ladies, present and absent, to the Russian and American ollicers, and greeted with bum- pers and rousing cheers, Every one was in the best of salen and alter lunch joined in the dance, which was rried on until late in the afternoon, when the guests Gredually departed for their homes, periecily delightea with the kind and gracious hospitality of the Russian officers and (he admirable and charming tone of the entire entertainment Among the guests were Com- modore Clitz and wile, and officers of the New Hamp- shire; Lieutenant Rockwell ot the Adams, with a num- ber of officers from that ship; Lieutenants Hutchins, Chasley, and Rhoades the commanding officers of the tron-clads, and wives, and a great number of officers’ wives from Beawiort; together with ladies from that dull town. No such gatboring of ladies bus been seen on shipboard in Port Royal for many a long day. It is quite certain that many of the fair ones of Boauiort will miss the gallant Russians, who have done so much to give animation and variety to the humdrum lite ot th Portion of the world, when they have depurted for moro lively scenes 1 should omit notice of a very novel aud delightiul feature of the sojourn of our friends from the banks of the Neva, aid I not allude to the pleasant Jittie afternoon recep- tions so nmany of our vitloers have enjoyed in the cosey wardroom of the Ascold, when, without ceremony, the most genial hospitality is extended, Tea, such as bo people except the Russians seem to fina, is served at three o’clock in glasses, with sugar, thin slices of lemon and a suspicion of Jamaica rum or cognac to give ita delicate flavor, Over these mild punches and @ cigar or @ cigarette made of the choicest tobacco grown in Bessarabia, in comparison to which the popu- lar Turkish tobacco is very much like a Jersey cabbage leaf, tne pleasant hours are spent in con- versation on political, soctal or scientific topics. One who has jarticipated in these de- lightful recreations can possibly imagine the secret charm which brings and holds togetter old ludies in idie gossip evor the marvellous substitute or imitation of Bobea, which obtains throughout our land. How tongues would rattle, fancies swarm and good cheer prevail, but with peaceful and pleasunt re- sults, if said gossips could but enjoy such chi as the Russians qual! The future beuelactor of his race will be that man who introduce: the American pub- lic @ genuine, pure tea, to take the piave of the wretched fabrication sold under that nam ‘Tue Aacold bas been thoroughly refitted, painted in- side and out, and made ready for the most thorough inspection, Sbe appears to ve more like an immense yacht thai a” grant man-ol-war. She will doubt. less sail on ‘Thursday next Jor Nortolk to join tne ‘squadron lying there under Rear ‘Admiral Bontarkoff, and she will probably be off tho Battery, in be North River, by the middie of April, and perhaps beiore, and New Yorkers can then see whata splendid ship she is. The corvette Huron, Commander Ryan, nus gone up to Charleston in order to give the crew liberty. Her arrival there just before Washington’s Birthday was supp by the excited Charlestonians to be in some way con- nected with political masters—a conjecture, [ need not Ht entirely without foundation, lam told that the cers have been the recipients of a good deal of uu- obtrusive attentions and bospitalities on the part of the older citizens, and that they aro enjoying ihem- selves in a very agreeable way. She will probably re- main thero another week and return here to repienish ber stores and make ready iors cruise in the West Indies. corvette Adams, Commander John W. Philip, is about to take a littie trip to Charleston, also for the parpose of giving the boys on boarda run on shi Yhey have been very busily at work since tbe ship was put in commission, and are rapidly being con- verted into guod sailors. You will remember that they are apprentice boys, moxtiy transierred {rom the echooiship Sabine, at Portsmouth, N, H., and are surely aduing preof to that given by other training ships of the wisdom of the naval officers who devised and are carrying out this new system for preparin sailors for te American navy. In two years we shai have a body of trained, experienced young men, who will supply every reagonaole uemand for petty officers in our seagoing ships. ‘They have shown their capac- ity and zeal 1u making the Adams a man-ol-war that any navy would feo! proud of; and I am sure that they will make a still bigher mark 1m the future, there are various rumors in regard to the final destination of the Adams, The Mediterra- nean, the Brazils and the South Pacific are all men- tioned asthe provable cruising ground of this cor- vette; but no one seems to know where she will go. Wherover sho goes whe will be a credit to the service. Lieutenant Leonard Chasley, commanding the tron- clad Catskill, bas taken a brief leave, on account ot impa: health, and Ijeutenant J, A. H. Nickels, of the Adams, 18 temporarily 11 command, EXPENSIVE FLIRTATION. Mr. Peter Duvernay, a ‘a Frovet gentleman residing at No, 101 East Twenty-fifth street, was the complainant yesterday against Jeony Wilson, whom he accused of stealing from him on Tuesday night pocketbook con- taining a five dollar United States Treasury nove anda gold check for $1,000. Duvernay said that about eight o'clock ‘Tuesday evening he met two young girls in Third avenue nour Tentn street and became engaged in conversation, Ho walked with them for about ten pote one on each side of him.
