FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Active, with a Gen- eral Rally in Prices. GOLD 104 7-8 A 104 3-4 A 104 5-8. Government Bonds Feverish and Weaker at the Close—Railway Bonds Irregular, piesiertenia Money Easy on Call at 2 1-2 a 4 Per Cent, Closing at 3 Per Cent on Call, —-—__——_ Wat Srxext, Weovespay, Feb, 28—6 P. M. Like Garrick between Tragedy and Comedy, in the famous picture, the prudent stock-jobbor 13 haiting be- tween two opinions as to the future of the market and 4g in sore uncertainty us to which way to turn, Bears, dycd in the wool, laugh to scorn the existing Animation, and impute the rise toa dexterous twist of the shorts. They prophesy that the advance will die out with the short interest, and that the effect will be simply to establish a favorable ‘coigne of vantage,” upon which vo build a iresh series of sales, Meantime, per contra, long suflering bulls regard the situation ‘with unusual hopefulness—are gencrally buoyant and sometimes blatant, ‘hey regard the Presidential ques- tion to be as good as settled, the repose of the nation assured, and arguo that the country will at last got the chance, for which it has long been waiting, to start on a Course of fresh prosperity. Between opinions thus dia- Metrically opposed to cach other the prudent speculator stands, content to accept the dilemma, for fear of a toss from its horns should he swerve to the right or left, There are plenty of imprudent operators, how- ever, who are willing to curse the odds and take the chances go long as they are not deprived of their daily gamble, and these made lively work to-day. The tn- tlination was strongly toward tho bull side ot the Account, and the effect was visible in a rising market and Increased transactions. No inconsiderable part of the strength was attributable toa sharp upward spurt pf the coal stocks, which in turn was due to the lavor- ablo prices realized at the auction sales of the Penn- sylvania and Delaware and Lackawanna companies, Much apprehension had been manifested lest a serious concession in prices would have to be submitted to; but when it wus realized that the rates obtained were even better than those of the previous sale the favorable effect at once made’ itselt visible on the stock markot by a sharp advance in quotations, Bears are not casily nonplussed, however, and are for- tile in resources, and it did not take long to construct @ neat little story to the effect that the coal sale was a put up Job, in that buyers and sellers were convertible personages and that the product disposed of was not likely to ve disturbed. We give the story for what it is worth, simply noting that it hada certain vaiue in the board room tn the ‘way of creating adoubt and a subsequent depression which was not entirely recovered from, Both Western Union and Lake Shore were prominent in the advance, though Gould’s broker was apparently attacking the former through the medium of seller 60 options, some 5,000 shares having been thus marketed, There was bo proof, however, that an equal or even larger amount was not bought at the samo time, for casb or Fegular, by other agents quietly employed for that pur- pose, Points aro given to purchase Rock Island and Northwest preferred, There was a moderato ad- vance in each of them, but the price did not hold to the end. Some of the Twenty-third street people have been active buyers for the last three days, but whether they havo ventured beyond covering shorts is not as yet apparent. They have a keen scent fora dollar, however, and have not been bad persons to follow in the last sixemonths. It is desirable, nevertheless, to get well on their trail before giving tongue. The suit bo eject Messrs, Torrance & King from the receiver- ships of the Ohio and Mississippi road, commenced to- day, and hopes are entertained that some vitality may be galvanized into the stock, which has lain as dead as a herring for the last six weeks, Perhaps the most notable event of the day, and one nearly overlooked, ‘was the decline of gold to 104}, which 18 the lowest price since June, 1862. The decline is referable to the action in Congress, which seems to presage a quiet solution to the political problem. THB SALKS TO-DAY.
