FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. | The Market Slightly Dull, with Improved Prices. Advance in A, and P, Telegraph and New York Central, FURTHER DECLINE IN JERSEY CENTRAL Panicky Feeling in All the Coal Stocks. GOLD STEADY AT 105 5-8. Money on Call Easy at 31-2 and 21-2 Per Cent. Watt Street, ‘Tnerapay, Feb. 15—0 P. M. ‘The committee of stockholders appointed to investi- gate the affuirs of the New Jersey Central Raliroad ro- ported this morning, according to appointment, aud their statement afforded the chief topic of conversation in financial circles, The guesswork which was prof- fered in lieu of facts at the lust meeting by the officers of the company has, by the action of the committee, been reduced to figures that make a sorry showing indeed, It would appear that the concern has been running Dehindbana for yeare—that from 1867 to 1877 tho logs en the property, including the stock dividend for 1866 and the depreciation on equipment, has reached the sum of nearly $10,000,000. To this must be added ‘the '-38 on the Lehigh und Wilkesbarre stock and bonds held by the company and the amount of the “blanket mortgage’ 1oaned to the Wilkesbarre cor- poration, which together can be put down for $10,000,000 more, All this ume the concern went on paying dividends to the extent of over $13,090,000, carrying its head high, chanting its own praises, until a very recent period, as a property beyond re- proach for its intrinsic value, and roping in conliding investors with all the cheek and plausibility of a “‘cap- per” tots gambling nell, It has existed aga veritablo whited sepulchre, for it has enticed by fulse rep. resentations the savings of widows aud orpbans, she trust funds of estates and tho gains of hard handed ‘abor, and it has buried them effectually ‘out of the nght’’ of those who conildently put their trust in the stability of the company and the’ declaration of its officers. Mr. Brookman, the chairman, was not in- clined to mince matters, but handled the whole concern without gloves, giving utteranceto some very plain truths in equally plain language. But the description of the meeting culls for more space tnan we can give It here, and wo invite attention to the detailed state- ment published in another column. The effect of the report proved proju- dicial to the market price of the stock, even before its purport was known, and forced quota- tons down from 14 to 124; before moridian. Toward the closo of the day the bears, taking warning trom the strongth of the rost of the market, made haste to cover, andran tho price up to 12%, at which na, transactions were mado, Although fluctuations wore frequent and rapid tho otver anthracite funcies acted as though they wero capable of drawing along breath now that they were cut loose from the Jersey Central corpse, and showed it by a decided upward tendency, Delaware and Hudson improved shree points upoii the day’s business, and Volaware and Lackawanna rather more than held its own, having derived their strength, 1t 18 alleged, from the support of the Osborn party, who have turned out to be farious bulls—real or pre- tended, The familiar saying relating to the burned child and the fire seems to be pertinent to this case, but as Jack Bunsby remarks, “Tne bearings of this observation lays in the application it.” A large business was also done In Lake Shore, points to buy being as plentiful as pins in a paper, That they could prick, too, was evidenced by the alacrity with which certain members of the Twenty-third street faction hastened to cover their shorts, thus working the stocx up from 51}; to 525, from which it receded at the close to 5114. Western Union camo in for the largest transactions of the day, aggregating nearly 48,000 sbures, There was not, however, a corresponding activity in fluctua- tions, the price hardly exceeding im variation the Nmits of 1 percent, Much of the stir was due to the industry of Mr, Gould’s brokers in the eflort to place seller 60 options against purchasers of cash stock, at a difference of % per cent, This is pretty good proof that the arch-operator was not driven out of his short jatrenchments during tho California attack, and that in ‘view of the improved condition of the Atlantic and Pacific competition he is likely to hola the fort for + some time to come, ‘The birds of ill omen that hovercd about Centra! and Hudson yesterday, hooting prognostications of coming evil, were inclined to roost quietly to-day under a re- covery of one per cent in the price of the stock. As for the rest of the list, beyond a steady duln the: is nothing to remark, re that Northwest preferred, which exhibited a meaningless spurt upward a day or two since, subsided agaiw to-day to the extent of two Points, and retired from active life and to ita normal condition and yalue, It would appoar that the revolutionary brokers of the Gold Board who are attempting the organization of arival stock market have beon “hoist with their own petard,” the Governing Committee of the Stock Ex- change having obtained alease of the presont Gold Room, with the intention of making it an adjunct to the old Board. About three-fifths of the Gold Board membors belong to the Stock xchange already; conseqnently those not membors of the latter institution will be left out in tho cold, with liberty to construct the new en- terpriso at their leisure.
