GOLD 107 1-8 A 107 1-4 A 107 1-8. Government and Railway Bonds Steady. WAL. Street, Wepxespar, Dec, 27— 6 P. M. So far prices are still slipping downward, and there Je mo telling whether, like the vebicioon the Mon- tagnes Russes, they will slide back again to former figures or whether they will remain permanently at the bottom of the bill, The descent at present seems to be as easy as that to Haaex, ana some stocks are bad enough to deserve sonsignment to a financial limbo without bevelit of Mockjobbing clergy. There was a faint attempt at the opening to apply a speculative tourniquet to railroad sbares, and Lake Shore and Michigan Central were severally twisted up to 58 and 45%. Unfortunately, they did not possess strength enough to hold on to the improvement, and weakening {rom that point they closed up at 673, and 44%. ‘ Separating these two stocks from the rest of the list in point of transactions there were scarcely 20,000 sbares leit to be divided, and the interest manifested in the general schedule was as limited as the deahngs. Mhnois Central fared the worst of any, selling down to 61 trom 6334, with final figures 4g per cent better. As with all investment securities the difficulty of obtain- ing cash stock for delivery ehecks the disposition to make short sales, so when a decline sets in there is lacking the supporting power which 1s afforded through bear purchasers to purely speculative stocks, Illinois Central is 1m this category, for the Thsignificant short interest having been pretty nearly closed up during the late sharp rally there is no market offered tor the shares which are dribbling out of the bands of timid holders, There was another doctor’s sharp decline in Central and Hudson based on unfavorable reports of Mr, Van- derbilt’s health, and afterward a fractional recovery, Probably on the contradiction of the same. This trading on the infirmities of human nature ard gam- Ding, ag it Were, on the brink of a grave 1s as ghoulish ag it 18 heartless, The remainder of the railroad list might bave gone off sleighing go tar as its presence lent uny interest to the day’s proceedings, There scarcely business enough to alter quotations or fractions stnail enough to register the changes. The coal stocks were more active. New Jersey Central, which has been perched up at 47 or there- abouts for a aay or two past, toppled over to-day, pos- sibly with the inancial scheme which gave 1t elevation. Early quotations at 373 shrunk into simpler ones, Upparently on telegrapaic orders from Phiiadelpbia, acd gong-sound closed up business and figures at 357. Delaware and Lackawanna remained more steady and comparatively neglected, operators waiting for a glimpse of the tigures which are expected trom the directors’ meeting on Friday. Both gold and stocks exacted 5 to 7 per cent coin for carrying, With the pinch near the close of the day, An effort to shilt cousiderable amounts of the precious metal from wearied shoulders to iresher ones dropped the price to 107 at one time, though final transactions were made at 107.
