10 WRE LING. A Splendid Match at Boston Musie Hall. OWENS AND MLAUGHLIN THE CONTESTANTS. The .Vermont Champion the Winner. Besvox, Dec, 27, 1876. Of the tests which the capacity ot tne Boston Music Hall has had there never was one more severe than that of this evening. The occasion was the great gathering at the long talked of wrestling match for a $1,000 purse and championship of the world between Colonel James H. Mcl.aughlin, Mf Detroit, the champion of the West and Joseph Owens, of Vermont, the champion of the Eastern States, Itis no exaggeration, to say that there were over 4,000 people in the andiidbe, including many dis- Uaguished sporting men trom New York and the West, as well as from more immediate localities, TH VERMONT HERCULES James Owens, the Vermont pion wrestler of the Eastern States, is a native of Fairileld, Vt, a small place near St, Albuns, and is the son of a haray farmer, who, in bis younger days, en- joyed considerable reputeas a wrestler. Indeed the jamily is noted for 1s physieal virtues, a8 may be judged irom the fact that MeMabon and Cox, botn well Known as trippy are cousivs of the contestant in this match. Owens 1s but twenty-eight years old, and has as yot made no great mark among athletes, He is five jeet nine inches in height, weighs 185 pounds, gud measures just forty-one juches around the chest, Naturally be has a dark complexion, which has been deepened by exposure, while his eyes, hair moustache are decidedly black. He seems to be very nervous and wiry, and in his bouts ex. pects from action than strength, though bis deep chest and well-turned limbs show that he is a fellow of great endurance, He still lives upon the farm where ho was born and bus never en- guged in any other than agricultural pursuits. He says he drifted almost unconsciously mio the habit of wrestling, acquiring it as a stady and keeping it up as he grew to munhood. Iu neighvorhoot I vublic occasions, such as the “March omeeung,’? when the people got to- gether in considerable numbers, it 1s the custom for the young inen to have a wrestling bout. Participating in these Owens soon becume an expert, and not mach later was acknowledged te local cham- pion, Four yeurs ago he made his Urst mateh with a wan nuned Burt, in St thire teop minutes. Afterward ne spenta yeur in Brockton, and nore rapid his on annual Mass, durmg Which tine be met and vanquis ina ridiculously short tine a man named Holmes, the so-ralled champion ot Plymouth county, He ‘thea made a taateh with Perer MacCennon, of Brighton, and went home to traia for i, but, untortunately sprain- ing one of bis ankles, he tailed 10 come to ‘ume, aud was oblt to fortert mmatches, but has kept in p by wrestling with uuy uf lis neighvors who cared to try himon, Four weeks ago he commenced traning tor to-night’s cou- test under the direction of Edward Cox, who is) him- self a wrestler. He says he vas not bevn very strict wi his diet, although be hus abstamed trom gross lood us far ws convenient, He bas exercised with clubs about an boura dey and also taken a daily trial with Cox 1 collar and elbow practice. Besides this be has ypt up his regular tarin work, which gave him an avundauce of healthy exercise. DLONEL WLADG THK WESTREN CHAQU ColonelJohn HM ‘niin, the champion from the West, 18 a very different style of man. He is tall, gracelul and elegantly formed; ard, like Owens, began wresting When a boy, and kept up’ the practice until the day came when he found binselt famous. Ia the spring of 1870 a wrestling match for the championship of the United Stutes was heid in Detroit, at which thirty entries were made, the Colonel being amon: the number. To the astonishment of those who did not know him, McLaughun came off victorious over some ot the best wrestlers in the country, This secured him the beit und titie of champion of America, and as hort time after he claimed the champtonstip of England And placed a deposit with Be'ls Life, which has never been covered. During the war tué Colonel entered the army us u private. but for bravery and merit he was rapidly promoted, leaving the service as major and brevet lieutenant’ colonel. For a tune he gave his Whole atieution to wreatling, but subsequently became # cvnductor on a railroad running out of Detroit, where he is now employed. In his career as wresuler he tas met all the best men from New York to Sun Franci-co, ond he accepted this chailenge with arecord of thirty-four matches for to only one against him. He tea person of exemplary babits, mever using stimulants always epjoyig robust health, In manner be is Jand courteous, and 18a person of cousiderabie butive refinement.
