THE PISTOLLED BOATMAN. (CONTINUED FROM EIGHTH PAGE.) ‘ont that she came to understand that the man sho re- @arded us her husband’s murderer was at liberty. Then rising {rom her seat she shook her clenched fists at him, though she struggied at the same moment ‘with painful emotions, ana blurted out:—Do not think that you will escape #0 easily. You have said that it ‘was you toat killed my husband. His blood is upon your bead, and you'll be punished for it yet."’ Her thter, who was beside her, tried to pacify her, but ane lett the Coroner’s office alternately weeping at the Toss she had sustained ana protesting against the pris- Oner’s discharge. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Tho Stock Market Irregular—Coal Shares Firmer—Other Faneies Weakening. GOLD 107 3-8 A 107 1-2 A 1073-8. Money on Call Loans 4 and 5 Per Cent—Gov- ernment and Railway Bonds Generally Steady—Foreign Exchange Quiet. —_—_——_—_ Wau, Sraegr, ‘Tuvmspay, Dec, 21—6 P. M. } Watt Sraest, Tuurspar, Dec. 21—6 P. M. } By unanimocs consent the Lake Shore people voted to let their favorite alone to-day. It was not so much ‘& willingness to “let well enough alone” as it was tue difficulty of bettering the price without absorbing too much of the stock. One may have too much of a good Mhing, even it it be in the shape of shares, particularly when the envy of brotherly bulls becomes less greedy and the hatred and malice of contentious bears grow apace, The French expreas the idea by the proverb that “the game is not worth the candle;”’ brokers, in the refined language of their trade, imply a fear of getting “‘sinck.’’ Either form of words suggests prudence, and this virtue was an exalted horn among tho bull con- Magent this morning. Before noon there occurred a general improvement mm prices, and the highest figures of the day were made; but the course of the market turned with the sun, and the session closed weak and feverish. For the first time in many weeks Michigan Central shot beyond Lake Shore in amount of transactions and was constituted the head centre of interest. An advance from 46% to 47% and a return to the original price at the close marked tho limits of the fluctuations, while sharp covering upon the part of the shorts, pro voked by fresh stories of an attempt to break up tho unprofitable leases, was the moving cause. At the same tume the bulls turned the screws upon the cash stock ag an extra boost, and twisted 1-64 out of the bears as a bonus on burrowed shares, Lake Shore would have fullen in comparative obscurity under the neglect of its triends bad not the {wenty-third street bears pitched 1m late in the day with a supply of some 3,000 shares of short stock, which weakened still further the al- ready deciining figures, and brought the quotation to Bcloso at 5934, or % per cont below the bighest prico bf tho session. Illinois Central, which had grown better some days back. experienced a dangerous relapse this morntog Qnd sunk to 65 under sales of 1,150 shares, We had ‘Occasion to state in, this column some time since that @othing better thana 2 percent dividend could be expected upon this stock, and tho official declaration made to-day proves the correctness of this statement, This drop, however, from a5 per cent dividend to 2 has beon a surprise and disappointment to many Btockhbolders, and received expression in sales of long Stock at the decline above noted. Western Union was Blose behind Lake Shore and Michigan Central in volume of business, and was cdrried upto 7234, ex aividend of 134 per cent. Much of tho trading was a mere swapping of jackets in the shape of purchases of regular stock against Bales at soller sixty days. It appears that some 9,000 shares, turned by Mr. D. P. Morgan, of Messrs. Osborn & Mills (who represent Jay Gould), are deliverable by the latter partics on Saturday, and the buyimg to-day was for the purpose of providing tho needful stock, the game being again turned out on seller sixty option ata @iference of 34 per cent from cash price. Erie was better at one time by nearly one point, the Northwest remained steady, and the St Pauls drooped ‘under a probably correct impression that the next weekly statement would show a further falling off in earnings. ‘On the other hand, the coal stocks were more active and higher during their buoyancy from the improved prices obtained at the auction sale of the Delaware and Lackawana Company this morning. The railroad peace, which the lorgs have been can- tering about as a first class battle charge, on examina- tion betrays symptoms of being spavined and touched in the wind, and fears are expressed that 1t may turn out no better than a broken down hack after all, ‘This feeling, with tho intelligence privately whispored thatthe Commodore was decidedly worse, had tne offect of bringing about the feeble conclusion to this market as above noted, THR #ALKS TO-DAY, The transactions at the Stock Exchango to-day aggree gated 118,290 shares:—New York Central and Hudson, 2,400; Erie, 6,700; Lake Shore, 18,300; Northwestern, 200; Northwestern preferred, 200; Rock Island, 900; Pacific Mail, 7,100; St. Paul, 1,600; St. Panl preferred, 11,600; Obios, 4,400; Western Union, 16,900; Wabash, ~ 2,030; Delaware, Lackawanna ana Western, 13,500; New Jersey Centra!, 6,900; Michigan Central, 19,800; {ilinois Central, 1,150.
