a FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL the Stock Market Generally Firm, with an Incrense of Activity. GOLD 107 5-8 A 107 38-4. Money on Call 5 and 4 Per Cent—Government Bonds Steady, with an Upward Tend- ency—Rvilway Mortgages Firm. Wat Srarsr, Frivay, Dec. 15—6 P. M, ‘The little leayen created by the stir in Central aad Budson and Lake Shore has leavened the whole mass of railroad properties, and acted like yeast upon the market generally. Whether the bread cast upon the Waters of speculation will show a profitable return or whether the cake will turn out ail dough, as 50 maby recent bull movements have done, is nut easy to be foreseen. Cortain it is, povertheless, that business to- day has exhibited a good deal of the old-time spirit, while a confident feeling in better prices is more generally prevalent, It was assumed as a matter of fact this m that the kiss of peace had been passed around among the hoiligerent Failroads, but no one seemed to know how, when or where, or tomuch care, so long as an impress was made upon the course of prices. In this there was no disappotntment, the market starting off ander the leadership of Lake Shore, which, as usual, absorbed nearly hal! of the day's trade in process et advancing from 575 to 5834 and receding to 573g, at which it slosed. Anet gain of about \{ per day, which has Deen about tho ratio, is not a movement of a very con- ‘Vulsive nature, and it bas required a good deal in the Shape of promised dividends and other counter-irri- tants to effect even that. Central and Hudson moved from 106% to 1074, more ‘upon its own merits and Icss upon cxtrancous assist- ance, but in theend lost the improvement and closed et 104%, with the quarterly dividend of two per cent deducted, Areport that the Supreme Court had empowered Mr. Jewett, the roceiver of the Erie Ratiroad, to pay two years’ back interest on the fifth mortgage bonds ‘was instrumental in giving a strong tone to tho stock, and with somo reason, since by the action the long threatened foreclosure proceedings are probably Placed in abeyance for the prosent. While the Granger shares were neglected and rather lost than gained on the day’s work Rock Island averaged trom 99 to 1003s, under an unusually large trade, The Northwestern pool geom to have a second string to their bow in this security, and now ap- parently tugging at it to-day with fair success, There were no telegraphic tricks played with New Jersey Central and the other coal carriers, and not Much attention paid to them in any way. The ro- mance about the receivership of the first named (as palmed off yesterday) it 1s thought by many will re- Bult inareality before long, unless matters turn out more favorably than they have doue, or sumething ocours to counterbalance tho actual loss of seventy- five cents to $1 per ton, which is now made in market- dng coal by all the great companies, Tn connection with the coal trade some light is thrown upon the on by a knowledge of the terms at which contracts bave been made by them for coal for illuminating purposes in late years, We are informed on undoubted authority thattho schedule prices of the best description (the Pennsylvania and Westmoreland sort) were tor 1874, $7 per ton; for 1875, $6 50 por ton; for 1876, $6 per ton, witha probability of still cheaper rates or 1877, To this reduction of $1 per ton must be added cheap Fates for labor and probably a lessening of other ex- ponses. The sublime impudence of these monopolies en- @eavoring to force an advance of 40 a 50 per cent on jupplies to the city government will be partially puged by tho statement above made. Gold sold at 107% and 107%, closing at the latter figure. No new facts or fictions were brought to bear upon it, and the withdrawal of £63,000 from the Bank ot England, all of which, according to late solograms, ‘was for shipment to the United States, failed to weaken the premium. Fawway, Dec, 15—6 P. M. Business continues to languish in most departments, but there 1s no spparert relaxation of that firmness of the markets which has beeu the most conspicoous charactoristic all though the past few months of un- cortainty and gencral excitement, But although poli- tics are about as much mixed as ever businoss mat ters begin to take shape, in the conviction that peace ‘will contimue to obtain, no matter which particular party shall succeed is securing the honors and the spoils of office, But thisis always a dull season, and the present is no more so than usual, while indications of at least partial rovival of industry st an early day aro accamalating. Buyers are becoming more numerous than thay have been along back, notwithstanding the tact that not assumed those proportions mereantile transactions ha whieh would indicate the presence of many bona Ade ‘The dry couds murket has remained without decided alters- tioa, although thore hasbeen some slicht increase fo the demand for popular tabries in both the cotton aad woollen eparcments.
