10 THE MELANCHOLY DANE, MAKING POOLE’S TRAVESTY OF “HAMLET” A SERIOUS PLAY—SHAKESPEARE'S “HAMLET” FUNNY IN COMPARISON, A singularly serious performance of a travesty of tre last oight—a performance so unique in itself and all its sur- that it will be long remembered by all who vwesisted’? init, The audience was one of the most assembled in a place of | amusement ju this eity, The actors were all gentle- men of education and refinement, The namo of vue of | the leading universities of the country was associated With the Occasion, and with two exceptivus the per- formers were all graduates of the univer” sity. Sweet charity, too, was the excuse, 4f not the motive ior the performance, and age was invoked for the benefit of ‘Yale College Dramatic Association will give a burlesque Fepresentation of ‘Hamlet’ tor the benefit of the dis- pensary of the Church of the Holy Trinity.” It was evident thay people who never went to the play wore “Hamlet? took place at the Union League Th round: intelligent ana culty ed ev the the church. Tne tickets of admission read, the patrons of this event. ‘The little theatre was over full. The ladies and gentiemen in the stalls were ox- ceptionally well dressed and had paid an exceptionally high price tor their places. There was an orchestra, too, amuteur, it is true, but exceptionally good of its kind. The scenes shilted like real scenes in a real theatre and people dreesed in imitation of something or somebody mado their exits and their entrances as if ‘house. But here everything similar to anything over seen before ceased entirely, Nothing moro tncongru- ous can be imagined. Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” is generally considered « somewhat serious production, and even Mr. Fechter fails to make it alto- gether funny, but for downright lugubriousness Shukespeare’s production is not to be comparca with Poole’s. Who Poole is only a very bold and reckless the courage to inquire, but Pooie’s travesty might well be mistaken for the original work into which Shakespeare or Bacon of somebody en- deavored to infuse a little sweetness and light. It was Poole’s travesty upon which the scholars of Yale, in a way so honorable to their alma mater, expended their Strength and their genius last night, It 18 not to be doubted that President Vorter and the rest of the faculty will heartily thank them for this evidence of their devotion to their university, lt was a charity perlormauce, and so it is out of the reach of criticism, afact which can scarcely tail to give pain to the tearned pundits of Yale who taught these young fellows how to be very scrious for the amusement of the rest of the world, Fortunately the reporter was not ex- tluded from the entertainment, and be can relate a8 | history what it is forbidden to the critic to discuss, Fhe play opened with the state apartment in the pal. ace of the King at Elsinore, and Polonius, Laertes and yy were w they were really players in an actual pli man would h the rest of tue courtiers entered us if th party ol one-legged seamen at the Sailors’ Snug Har- vor iiling in to dinner. There never was such tuis morning he won’t know his own face, thing was done just as Edwiv Beoth wouldn't hi fone it, ana it Was not done as anybody else could have done.it, Yet it was ike Booth. Humpty Dumpty Fox used to tell astory tothe cilect that when Book saw him play the burlesque of Hamlet the tragedian Was g0 Uncertain as to bis own identity that he was fompelled to got somebody to tread on bis sorest coru jo make out whether or not it was he who was playing X. If Booth had seen the burlesque last mght, which he was only prevented seeing by # previous enzage- ment of Lis own, he would have telt like being trampled upon allover. And the gentie Ophilia—she was « Charming creatur If she did not make a hole in the ‘flats’? in ber ‘“ront scenes’? 18 was was not trom wunt of elbow action, ‘But the ghost—he will be | tomembered forever aud a day. He was a jolly o0a fellow, that was pluin to be seon, but he ad not practised waiking backward, and was & little too materianzed for the narrowness of the first cmtrance, But oven historians like Gibbon and Macaulay could not enter into the minutest par- hiculars of the events they related, and it is equaily impossible in the present case. in consequence it must sufliee to say that some of the audience nad a mistaken idea of the charactor of the performance. Some people imagined that the evening was to be one of jollity, and were surprised to see the play so sert- ous The mistake was natural, perhaps, but they bad one hearty laugh when the ghost announced as an ex- cuse for bis haste im his interview with Hamict, “We Keep good hours in bell’ At the same timo a tremor went over the houso as if Hiv Satumic Majesty's do- minions ought never to be spoken of outside of the pu'pit, and the question will doubtless be reierred to the Faculty of Yale, so that it may be satisfactorily determined whether the Alumni of the university may use the word in a serious play by Poole outrageously burlesqued by Shakespear MUSICAL AND DRAMATIC NOTES, Mr. Edwin Booth plays lego at the Lyceum matinée today. At tho given signal both sides rode into tho course, the Bostonians aligning thomselves along the Fourth avenue goal, while their opponents prepared to defend the Madison avenue stronghold. Mr. Blasson, umpire, tossed the ball in the air a tow minutes after eight o'clock, when the charge wes made. The red caps, or Boston club, endeavored to reach 1b in advance of the blues, or Cali- fornians, bat were unsuccessful, as Carillo, alter Mor. | gau missing, sent it sp.noing dangerously near the reds’ fortress by along hit, and Mowry, helping the good iptention, gave the ball another terrific rap, when 1 rolled swiftly through the reds’ goal in just 15 seconds, the Bostons being left entirely in the cold, This brilliant piece of play was loudly cheered by the spectators, Goals were now changed, and the bailonce more tossed to the centre of the course, Morgan, of the Californians, first reached the Sphere and gave it a decided rap; bat the Bostous wero warming to their work, ana, Faller being well backed by two or three men, they occarioned the blues some trouble; but Curillo worked the ball from the mass of norses’ fect, |, brilliantly striking it in ove- two order at full gallop, shot it again home, scoriug the second goal for the Californians, Time, 39 seconds.
