NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1876.—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL ‘The Stock Market Irregular, but at the Close Firm. GOLD 107 1-2 A 107 1-4 A 107 3-8. Government Bonds Higher, Railroad Bonds Steady, Money on Call 5 and 4 Per Cent. Wat Srrerr, } Wrowzavary, Dec, 13—6 P. M. ‘There was a general bracing up of prices to-day 2 the improvemont was maintained in a great measure until the close of business. The bulls announce that the “ball is up’ and invite speculation on their sice of the account, but the meagre amount of business done shows that there still exists a fear of skating upon thip jee and venturesome operators are few; still the un. expectedly good reports made by Central and Hudson and Lake Shore prove that they have done a fairiy satisfactory business in spite of the whining about low rates, and, at the Same time, presage lucrative earnings if these Jattér should be marked up. These facts have made their impress upon the quotations of the Vanderbilt Properties, which severally roso to 105% and 5734, and they in turn have stiffened, through their infla- ence, the rest of the railway list. The weak spot, however, in the Lake Shore movement, Is the p nacity with which point: The number of requ to “lond ma your ears, which it was proposed to-day to pour the whispered and valuable intelligence, would have astounded an aurist unacquainted with this description of loans, Nevertheless, whatever may be the issue, a better ap- Poarance was obtained for the day, at least, and the whole market was benefited by an advance of from }¢ toT percent The Western Union directors met to-day and de- tlared a dividend of 14 percent out of this current quarter's carnings, Tho surplus, after deducting the Aividend, it is estimated will amount to $820,595," as «gainat $101,045 for the previous quarter. The street bad been taught that this surplus would exceed $500,000, and some disappointment was felt that it had tallen short of that sum, ana for that reason, per- haps, the quotation remained without change. Tho extraordinary business resulting from the election and | the long continued political excitement cannot be “viewed in the light of a permanency, however, particu= larly in the face of the low sales and Southern opposi- tion of the rival ling, Gold lost part of yesterday's strength and the pro- mium receded \ per cent, partly trom the number of short contracts closed and partly irom the additional sum of. £213,000 being withdrawn from the Bank of England to-day. 1t is rumored that the Twenty-third street party, possessing their souls in fear of some mythteal political convulsion, have been large buyers of the precious metal. In this connection some clew may be had to the “blue ruin” stories which hover, like birds of 1il-omen, about the Manbattan Club and she “corner. An important meeting of bank representatives was beld this afternoon to take such measures as would lead to a reduction of national and State taxation upon their capital, this taxation being alleged, in the pres- ent depression of busivess, as too weighty to be en- dured. ‘If these institutions fail to make money at present they are only in the same boat with the rest of the community, and it would appear that taxpayers of every description—real, personal and internal rov- pnue—would have equalciaims to relief.
