THE MEXICAN REVOLUTION, Lerdo’s Army Routed ‘and Hlis Govern- ment Overthrown. A DECISIVE BATTLE. Programme of. the Victors—Financial Support Tendered. DIAZ THE MAN OF THE HOUR Mexico, Nov. 28, 1876, * The anticipated political change spoken of in my last as Likely to occur has been real: aud the govern- ment of President Lerio de Tejada no longer exists, The decisive struggle resulting in its overthrow took place on the 16th inst, on the line of the Mexico and Vera Cruz Railroad, and within sight of the Hua. tountla station, perhaps 116 miles from this city. The engagement commenced at ten A. M., General Al- latorre, of the government side, making the attack with infantry ia front and artillery on either flapk of the enemy. General Porfirio Diaz commanded the revo- lutiona®y troeps in person, and vol brought into action forces numerically equal, as far as can be judged, variously estimated at trom 3,000 to 6,009 men each, General Diaz laboring under the disadvantage of an inferior position, The struggie was fierce and deter- mined, both sides maintaining their ground with heros valor until three o'clock P. M., when, from the feeble position occupied by General Diaz, bis troops. wore beginning to yield. At this critical moment a body of men were seen advancing upon Allatorre’s rear, and ag that general had sent fora reinforcement of 3,000 men, amid the smoke and din of battle, he could not plainly distinguish the upproaching column, but sup- posed, of course, they were the desired reintorce- ments which were to decide the bloody contest. What, then, was his horror, when, instead, ho received a shower of bullets poured in from the rear, with the most disastrous eflect, which, with the renewed firing infront, quickly turned the tide of battle, leaving Generals Diaz and Gonzalez—tne latter com- mauder of the reinforcements—victors of tbe conflict ‘he governmént troops suffered & total defeat, with a loss of 2,700 killed and wounded, all the arms, artillery, ammunition and equipages The loss of General Diaz by killed and wounded were 1,400; among the latter thg valiant General Gonzalez, a hero of other battles, who was wounded inthe stump of one of bis arms, lost ina previous engagement, and ‘Tilurcio Montiel, ex-Gov- ernor of the federal district, THR CArITAL WITHOUT NEWS. Meanwhile in the capital the people were feeding upon rumors and suppositions. All communication by wire and rail having been cut off, nothing definite was known until tho morning of the 20th, when Gen- eral Allatorre, accompanied by some of bis officers and the political and mihtary governors, of Puebla, made their appearance, giving confirmation to the report uf the disustrous reverses of the govern- ment forces, In his roport to Congress on that day, General Allatorre declared it useless to continue the struggle, and that to do so was but to spill brave blood in vain, and it is rumored that he refused positively to make any further military efforts in behalf of the government. The greatest excitement prevailed througnout tbe city, anda ru- mor was current that President Lerdo would hand in his resignation during the day. This, bow- ever, he dif ngt do, and toward night it was generally understood that he would attempt an escape that night, accompanied by'some of his favorite Ministers. ‘Tho contents of the Treasury, so hardly raised by forced contributions, together with $23,000 taken from the “Monte Pio’ (government pawnshop), was that night distributed among Lerdo and his favorites, and later, between the hours of twelve and two o'clock, they leit the capital by coach and diligence, escurtod by a guard of 800 soldiers. A few miles outside the city 100 of the escort turned-back; and again the same day, at Lerma, a stall town this side of Sobnea, and their halting place for the night, ayother 200 deserted the Lerdista ranks, the officer in command giving a8 a reason the fear he bad of the soldiers revolting, killing the Presi- dential party und officers of the escort and taking pos- session of (We silver, It 18 Known that the party passed Sobnea im safety the day followimg (21st) and is sow somewhere in the State of Michoacan or on its vorder, liaviog been abandoned by ail the escort save any. On Tuesday the citizens of the capital awoke to the fact that there was no longer an existing government, and in the emergency Seftor ProtasioTaybe was ma Goveruor ad itcrim of the Federal distriet, and us- suming immediately the oillce, issued the following prociamation:—“Tbe chiet of the adiministrauion, in the person of citizen Sebastian Lerdo de Lejada, bas abandoned this ©: pital, cud by reason of this occur. rence, Franei-co Louza bas been chorgea with the mili. lary command of city, and the subscriber with tue olfice of Governor of the Federal district. In this character I cail upon the inhabitants of the sity, that during these disturbed moments, and until the regenerating army shall arive, that they will pre- ferve that peace and order which corresponds to the good seutiments of which they have ever given proof, With the tullunderstanding that the military chief as Wel (8 the fouera! On tho foliowng day the scene was ropeate& again on the third da: mid the joyous ringing of the Cuthedra loud prolonged “ the multitude e here of to-day, en: tered the abane atly to the satistaction of the populace. It is said that from. tack of com- Mmupicauon the trae situation of the city and fight of the President was not made known to bin anul the day previous. Great alarm was experienced by the inhabitants during the three days of abandonment by govern- mental autbyrity, especially as i was known that with the knowledge of this condition of affure many out- Jaws apd bandits, trom the surrounding mountains, had entered and were prowling about the city. Bus be it said, to the credit of all, that no acts of violence were committed, neither of disorder of any wayne tude, It was ‘said by the frieads of Gen- 1 Ding thar he desirea no ovation, and, corresponding to thi deciaration, nis entrance itu the capital was in the most unostenta- {ious manner, Without his warriors, in his piain field dress, and, greatly to the disappointinent of the crowd in waiting lo see him, in a close earriage.
