NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1876.—TRIPLE SHEET. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Feverish and Generally Lower. GOLD 1071-8 A 107 A107 1-4 Railway Bonds Steady—Government Securities Weak, but in Fair Demand—Money on ® Call 5a6a 243 Per Cent. Wate Starer, } Moxpay, Dec, 11—6 P, M. The Mills party having, by their gerrymandering of fast week, succeeded in transferring the load of Lake Bhore irom their own shoulders to those of the inuo- cents of the Stock Exchange, stood with their hands 4m their pockets to-vay idly contemplating the s:tua- tion. The market, in tho absence of all outside inter- est, lies as dead asthe traditional door nail, and can only be made to trend upward by the strenuous exer- Mons of professional operators, Lett to itsel!, figures sontract, and the artificial strength fades away witha real weakness which is only partially counteracted by scanty purchases on the part of the shorts, The unfavorable condition of things political and commercial remain as strongly marked as ever, and Bo inducement is offered for the venturers of eapital in a speculation which for the time being is hopeless ‘Of results. In addition to this the startling decline during the year iu such pre-eminently valuable properties as Mlinols Central, New Jersey Central and the other coal carriers bas widely dispelled the faith of mvestors in evon the healthiest class of railroad stock, while as to the sickly sort they are not to be touched with a tongs. Tne discrimination between the steady divi- dend-paying securities and tho rattle-trap fancies that neither divide, nor are likely for years to come—the sepnration, as it were, of railway sheep and goats—is slowly but surely going bu, with the effect of withdrawing the former from speculation and of sending the latter to oblivion. It ls possible to posacss too much ofa good thing, and the railroads are suffering from that very fxct Too many railroads and too little business aro horns of a dilctama that hi tossed dividends to the winds and given an unpleasant thrust to confidence even in the bonded debts, The customary support being. withdrawn this morn- ing the whole list sagged. New Jersey Central was conspicuous in the decline, being helped thereto by some imaginative news from Philadelphia, to the effect that default would be made upon their interest, and that the paper of the concern would be likely to go to protest. As no interest 1s duo until January the report was looked upon with a suspicion, which was shortly after sonfirmed by despatches declaring the previous tele. grams to be forgeries. Upon this a recovery took place, and the stock closed noarly up to the highest gure of the day. Lake Shore, which sold at the opening at 57%;, fell off to 66%, and rallied to 56%. The granger stocks were equally weak-kneed, but plucked up some little Strength, the news that the Supreme Court were not get ready to render a decision, and that the St. Paul earnings for the week had diminished $27,884, having Ro appreciable effect, Reading was quoted at one time in Philadelphia as low as 18%, a point of depression which it has not cen for many years, The old trouble, which bids fair to become chronic, of a collapse in its coffers, is al- leged to be the causo of the complamt. There was evidence of an intention to feel the pulse of the money market, the rate, which had been quiet at 4a5, being suddenly run up to 7 per cent. The advance, however, brought out a superabundant supply of capitai, which, at the close, was offered ut 23g per cent. It the desire were to test the possibility of an in, tended squeeze, im connection with a general bear movement, the response was not very satisfactory. The ‘Old Lady of Threadneedle streot”’ disgorded to- day another lot of £190,000 for shipment to this port. Wo effect was produced upou the gold market, though additional force was lent by the arrival of $1,000,090 by packet thig morning, At the close there was a general strengthening of the stock market, the advance being instigated by pur- chases of Lake Shore to cover shorts put out at tho close of the week by the disciples of “quick turns” jn Exchange court, TAY SALKS TO-DAY.
