FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL RGSS NENAN 0 ea wat eey The Stock Market Dult and Irregular— A Spasm in Lake Shore. GOLD WEAK AT 103 A 107 6-8 A 107 ———— Money on Call Loans 4 and 5 Per Cent— Government Bonds Steady. Watt ‘Srrxer, } Tavrspay, Dec. 7—6 P. M. In the absence of ail aid from the outside public the knots of stock gambiers who shape the ends of specu- lation seem to be growing pastoral in their tastes, in Mhat they treat the market like a thoroughbred Alder- ney, and milk it daily with more or less profit to themselves, present apathy asa proof of constitutional weakness in the market, and may endeavor to cure it by bring- ing up speculation as it were on the bottle, but the Tegimen has never heretofore been [avorable to sus- tained activity, and it is not likely to be so now, However, it was tried agaim to-day, Lake Shore and Michigan Coutral submitting to the manipulations of this professional dairyman and supplying the cream of the day’s business, Starting at 55%, by midday the favorite had been boosted up to 57 under a leverage which derived its power from revived promises of a railroad peace and from mysterious hintsas to much higher figures tor the stock. Nevertheless, in spito of ro colored assurances, 57 proved to be the culminating point of the day, and the quotation dropped back to 6634 with a quarter per cent improvement at the end. While Like Shore was firm and higher, Michigan Cen- tral for a wonder remained weak alter an early upward impulse, and closed lower than it opened. Mr. Sage has eo muddled the minds ot privilege brokers and board meinbers with his puts and calls and straddles and spreads upon the abuve stock that they doubt whether they are atootora borseback, and have no fixed notion whatever as to the future course of quo- tations, With the exception of the coal stocks, which fluctu- ated less than 1 per cent, the variations in the gen- vral list were eontined to eighths and quarters. At a meeting of the Chicago and Northwestern di- rectors to-day it was voted to declare a dividend of 4 per centupor the preferred stock payable December 22. The showing is a good one and exhibits a manage- ment creditabte to the company, ‘Tue weakest stock on the list was to be found in Miinois Central, which fell off from 684g to 654g, under damaging reports of its condition and a disbelief in the aext dividend, Gold took another dip from 1084f to 1073/, at which itclosed, The withdrawal from the Bank of England of £215,000 yesterday and a further sum of £53,000 to- day, with the prospect of a greater amount to-morrow, lor shipment to the United States, comes like a dead weight upon the stock already on band. Neither Tumors of ware abroad nor fear of domestic dinbroll- ment seem to have any effect in checking the cour: of the premium to lower prices. OPENING, HIGHEST AND LOWEST PRICES.
