ie + FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL The Stock Market Dull, but Firm—An Electoral Spasm. GOLD WEAKER AT 108 1-2 A 108 18. Money on Call Loans 6, 5 and Finally 3 Per Cent—Governments in Sympathy with Gold—Railway Mortgages Steady, Turspay, Dec, 5—6 P. M. Rarly hours of business renewed the old daily drone of inactivity; and the voices of the brokers, slug. zara compulsion, were heard in complaint of the drowsy trade and unprofitable market which run their diurpal course with the regularity of the sun or a passing @ottle at a banquet, ‘Transactions were even fewer than ou yesterday, and up to one o'clock r marned’ small enough to disgrace a Stock Bxchange al Liliput; but at this juncture a starp demand for Lake Shore eprang up, which ‘anoed the quotation nearly One point, and with it the rest of the market. A vague story that one democratic elector had been secured in Frorida, which, if a fact, would settle the Presiden- tial difficulty and disperse the threatening clouds, was apparently the prime cause ot the movement, and resulted in a Purchase of some 5,000 shares of Lake Shoro at prices ranging from 55% to 66 Thero was no after corroboration of the rumor, and t may tarn out that early information of this fort is: worse than no information at all, if the ock should bang tire and prove more easy of acquisi- tion than of resale ata profit. At any rate the shares go into strong hands, the olliciating broker receives bis commission (possibly as a reward of merit), and the significant fact 1s suggested that if the vexod political question were ofce and for all decided there would be fair reasons to look tor better prices and a more active ‘business. The impulse thus givon to the market was decidedly felt in Contral and Hudson, Michigan Central and the Northwestern shares, though the improvement in the first was somewhat duo to better accounts of Mr. Van- derbilt’s condition, and in the last to the apochryphal dividend on the preferred stock, which 1s seen by some far-sighted ones “us through a glass durkly.”” Even the St. Paul property looked up a bitin sympathy, dezpite the recurring weekly reports of earnings, which, growing worse and wore, now show a wiping out of: the handsome gain for the early part of the year, and, in addition, a positive loss of some $60,000, s compared with the same eleven months of 1875. The annual report of the Secretary o/ the Treasury did Not reaeh the street until late in the day, and when it did failed to make any impression upon the market, as it contains nothing particularly new in the way of in- formation or of recommendation, The principal points are:— 1, The desirability of funding legal tenders into thirty-year 43, per cent bonds, 2 Impracticability of a sudden accumulation of gold for redemption purposes. 3. No increase of demand for National Bank cur- rency, hence an improbable reduction of legal tender notes to $300,000,000 on or before January, 1879, 4. Gold sales no longer necessary, and hence accu- Mulation of gold from surplus customs possible, 5, Advises specie circulation to be increased to $80,000,000 and the legal tender to be limited to ten dollara, WALL StreRt, } THE SALRS TO-DAY.
