Sas 7 TRS NES FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Dull, but Firm— Prices Generally Higher. GOLD 108 3-4 A 108 5-8. Money on Call Loans 4 and $ 1-3 Per Cent— Government Bonds Steady, but Still Weak—Bailway Bonds Firm. Wat Street, Sarcrpay, Dec, 2—6 P, M. The condition of the stock murket is akin to one of those doubtful days in spring, which, hesitating be- tween sunshine and shower, touches neither extreme, and is simply exasperating in its uncertainty. Asunburst or a downpour, if established under the Tule of one ata time, is more satisfactory than a mad- dle of the two or than a pervading doubt as to which ig Hkeliest to occur, since in the one case due prepara- tion can be made and in the other it cannot. ‘Tho situation of the stock market is one of similar uncertainty. The most experienced veteran of the Btockjobbing contingent contesses his inability to see further into the future of prices than to the end of his nose, and confines himself to wise saws and Bursbyan utterances, Naturally thore is a standstill in busi- ness, and trade hangs suspended between peace and war, like Mohammed's coflin between earth and heaven, while the necdy broker, generally patriotic (when to bo so does not interfere with the main chance), is simply desirous of chaneé, and would greet the restoration of serene tranquillity or of “chaos come again” th equal equanimity. Ho was gratified by neither event to-day, and the market dragged along in the humdrum man- ner which has characterized it for sofie days back. The volumo of business is the most contracted of the ‘weok, scarcely exceeding 50,000 shares, while fluctu- ations wore equally restricted, being confined to frac- tions of one per cent. Nearly one half of the dealings were in Lake Shore alone, which improved % per centon the opening price, undor purchases for the Osvorn party and Twenty-third street, though the Movement was void of special significance. Delaware and Lackawanna was simply a copy of Lake Shore, in that its advance was about equal and brought about by the same parties. ‘Tho Western stocks remained dull and steady, with nothing to remark except that the St, Paul company tailed to supply their report of earnings, which, inas- ‘auch as the statement will cover eight days’ work, possibly should not be expected until Monday—soon zh, In all coascienco, if it be halt as bad as is rep- ented, Gold, was weaker by halt a point from yesterday’s vlvaing figures, though new fives are still pressed for sate on the London market at a further decline and are being offered on German and Hojland account. ‘The more encouraging aspect of things political in South Carolina, and the large shipment from England, havo renewed their depressing effect upon the pre- mium and rendered gold heavy to carry. Money on call ranged from 4} to 2 per cent, closing st 3, being considorably cheaper than yesterday under the dosire to obtain two days? interest, Thero was some improvement in the railway shares sndin Delaware and Lackawanna, which to a very moderate extent was partaken of by the wholo list, Nothing occurred, however, to dissipate the intense fulness of tho market or to promise brighter akies for the coming week.
