CoruMeia, Dec. 2—~Two Republican meme. bers (colored), Wyers and Hamilton, have just® deserted the Republican side and besn sworn iz by the Democratic Speaker. Both House are'still in sessfon. The Senate has adjourned till Monday. HAMPTON APFLIES TO THE COURTS. A motion was made to-day in the Supreme Court in behalf of Wallace, Speaker of the Dem- ocratic House, for a mandamus on Mackey, Speakerof the Republican House, tocompel him to deliver the returns for Governor in Mackey's possession to Wallace, as the legal Speaker of the legal House; also a motion for aquo war- ranto on the Hayes Electors. Both cases ave to be heard Monday. Mackey, in the House this evening, told Wal- lace he intended to remove the Edgefield men with State Constables. Wallace said the Housa was the only conservator of its own order, and could not legally be interfered with by Con- stables or any outside force, and he would resist them with all the power at his command, and would yield only to United States troops under Gen. Ruger. A QUEER PROCEXDING. CoLuMBIA, 8. C., Dec. 2—9 p. m.—The Rew publicans to-night seated four new members from Abbeyville County. No protests or eon- tests were heard. The Democratic members, with certificates of election from the Board of Canvassers, were in the Hall. WASHINGTON SPECULATIONS. Bpecial Dispaich so The Tridune. ‘WasnINGToN, D. C., Dec. 2.—There is reason to believe that the South Carolina Democrats will in any event attempt to insugurate Hamp- ton. If the Republicans succeed in preserving = quorum in the House long enough to fosugurats Chamberlain, a conflict appears inevitable., One theory is that it is the purpose to continue the present dead-lock in the South Carolina Legis- Iature until after Wednesday next, when the Electoral College meets, and the Hayes Electors. will certify the vote of the State. It is said that the Republican leaders here suspected the Democrats in South Carolina of an in- tention, if they could organize the Legislature, to repeal the law giving the people the choice of Electors, and returning to the old system in use in South Carolina before the War, when ths Legislature chose the Electors. To prevent thig at all hazards, it s said, was the malp object of the recent act of interference, and the purpose is now to keep the Legislature at a deadlock un til after Wednesday. This being dode, it is as- serted that Gen. Ruger will receive orders om no sccount to interfere except to prevenk bloodshed, to let the Legislature manage itg own affairs, allowing the Democrats to have the ascendency if they can get it. It is expected that they will do so; that they will canvass the State vote and declare Hampton Governor, and, having a majority on joint ballot, will choose a Democratic Senator. This story comee on sufficiently good autharity to make it at less{ probable. CABINET MEETING., There was a short session of the Cabinet st the Executive Mansion this morning, at whick all the members were present, excepting Secre« tary Fish and Becretary Robeson. It is under stood that later official reports from Gen. Ruger were read by the Secretary of War. It was belleved there was no necessity for any ad- ditional official action by the Governmentad present, and the meeting sdjourned atfer it had lasted about twenty minutes. GEN. RUGER'S INSTRUCTIONS. g In a telegram received yesterday from Gem. Ruger, asking for further instructions in regard toany further action on his part toward the rival Legislatures, the Cabinet were divided, sev- eral members advocating the sending of instruee tions to Gen. Ruger to oust the eignt memberg who hold certificates of election from the Soe preme Court, whiln other members contended that the Government had no right ‘to that ex- tent, and that it was the duty of the Federal Government to simply sustain the legally-con- stituted authorities and preserve peace. Inthiy * view the President agreed, and it was so declded, After the adjournment of the Cabinet, a tele- gram was sent to Gen. Ruger announcing that * his explanation of the action of the military on Tuesdaylast was satisfactory, and that hiscourss was {ully approved. 4 LOUISIANA. THE CASE CLOSED. Spectal Dirpaich to The Tribuze. o NEw OrLEANS, Dec. 2—8 p. m.—The case be- : fore the Returning Board was closed this morn- ing, when the time for receiving evideace, which had been extended at the request of the Deme- cratic counsel, closed. The Board has since been. in consultation over the evidence. No intima- tion has yet been made of when they will arrive at a decision, but it will probably not be befora Monday. . This evening Senator Sherman and. Gen. Gar- fleld, of Ohlo, Mr. Stoughton and Gen. Van Al- len, of New York, and Gen. Harry Whits, of Pennsylvania, left for the. North. The Hon. Job E. Btevenson, of Ohie, is the anly ane of the zentlemen from the North.
