A BUST OF THE xEV. E. H. CHAPIN. The congregation and friends of tne celebrated di- vine, Rev. E. H. Chapin, the acknowledged head and leader of Universalism in‘ this country, have in con- templation the purchase of bis recently. executed por- trait bust. For many years he has been extensively known «sa preacher and lecturer, and bas made for bimseif a host of friends not only in bis own denom- ination, but among the public generally, who Lave chosen this delicate method of manifesting thor ap- preciation of his worth, zealand tathtulness in the sacred office, and its mrnistrations of kindness. The work is executed by Julia Griffin, of this city, aud veins | mouelled trom life, is a rg and compicie of this emiment divine while yet i the pri me of inte, and bi wood the test of ere rie feiam " with great credit’ to the —arrist and gratification to the frends of Dr, Chapin. A good price was paid for the commodity, and the tories having strongly intrenched themselves in the works they built, which they named Fort St George, ‘seemed to feur no attack oF mterruption in their enterprise, A NIGHT ASSAULT, At the solicitation of Smith Washington consented to despatch a force to dislodge the depredators. Col- ouel Talimage was intrusted with the management of ecret expedition for this purpose. With 4 party of dismounted dragoons he crossed, November 21, the 16,000 | Bound trom Fairflela und landed at Old Man’s, now Woodville. concealed his boats tn the busbes by the water side and mar ched by night across the island to Mastic. On his route he called ata house where Mrs, Smith was staying and told her bis destination. Tallmage stated that in the conflict near at hand he might be compelled to destroy her house, which the loyalists had embraced within their works, ‘Destroy it if you can, onl¥ drive out these tories,” replied the patriotic dame. Tallmage now took ‘with him William Booth for a guide, and as he neared the sev- try at the fort be crept along the ground and watched until his back was turned, when he rushed on, and the sentinel Was dead belore he knew from whence bayouet thrust came. The fort was at once in- ed, and its garrison taken entirely by surprise. fr anticipated such a bold and sudden yy “WASHINGTON AND GLORY !’? + 50,020 | was shouted forth sitnultancously as the victors, car- rying everything betore them, rushed into the parade. 15,000 | The work was carried, and as the success{ul party stood elated with joy a volley of musketry was dis- charged on them trom the manor house, which formed a corner ofthe stockade. In a moment the doors were broken iu by the enraged Americans, who rushed up Stairs and pitched every one they could lay hands on out of the window. All would have been mg on the spot had not Tailmage interfered aod Ronnie the carnage. Inten minutes everything was quiet again, Having secured the 800 prisouers, who had formed the garrison of Fort 8t. George, demolished the work itself, burned the vessels at tue dock and ae- stroyed un immense quantity of wood, they set out on their return. A party was detached to Corum, who destroyed 300 tons of bay intended for the British cavalry in New York. In less than twenty-four hours these remarkable results were accomplished by a hand- ful of daring meu, without any Joss to themselves, and who brought back captives nearly four times their own number. Fort St. George consisted of «triangular enclosure of several acres, at two angles of which Was a strong barricade and at the third a re- doubt, a deep di and abaitis. Between the houses and the fort we: es twelve feet bigh. It was embrasured for six guns, but only two were mounted. ‘This bold and successful enterprise drew from Wash- ington a complimentary letier and from Congress a gratiiying resolution. Booth, for bis part in the ex- pedition, received a medal for “military merit.’ The British troops 1n this city. ther supplies being thus cut off, suflered most severely during the hard winter of 1780 for lack of fuel and forage, and the loyalists were taught a lesson they did not soon torget.
