ay FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, The Stock Market Still Feverish and Irregu- Jar—Prices Generally Lower. GOLD FIRM AT 109 34 Av 10) 7-8 Money on Call Loans 3 and 4 Per Cent—Govern- ment Bonds Quiet and a Trifle Lower— Railway Mortgages Dull and Barely + Firm. Wau Srnzer, } Mowvax, Nov. 20-6 P. Mf. A stormy day is not favorable either to activity or 10 an advanee in prices, and the market to-day showea fymptoms of yielding to the moistening infiu- ences and would probably have done’ so had not Lake Shore, in its strength, spread a sort of speculative umbrella over the railway list. ‘The support which it lent to dthers was much more than compengated for by that which it received itself, since, with the exception of Delaware ana Lacka- ‘Wanna, it engrossed the attention of the day. A strong party, constracted of the old materials, is said to have taken hold, and points are as plenty as blackberries that high figures will be asked. Of course there is alwaysa sprinkling of marplots and kiljoys fo strew thorns in the ways of pleasantness, and these, sneering at points, have been busily asserting that the promised rise is solely to make & market to sel) other stocks op, aud that in any event there will be met the obstacle of de- treased receipts which the road is now making. Like the large family with the measles, which shere was not infection enough to carry all around, bere was not business enough to supply Lake Shore ind the rest of the market also, and consequently the other fancies were reduced to a rotail trade, in which the nimble sixpence was paramount to the slow shill- ing; eighths were more frequent as fluctuations than quarters and halves, Quotations wore irrogular, however, the Northwest- erus improving under the favorable statement just made, and the St. Pauls declining because-there was mo favorable statement to make, while Rock Island dropped off a half point, for reasons unknown, and Michigan Central barely held its own. Apropos of the Granger stocks, we have received a letter commenting in strong terms of disapproval upon Certain strictures madein this column in reference to the Northwestern Railroad Company. The source from which it proceeds is so eminently Fespectable that it requires attention. Our observa- tions were ‘intended to reflect the views of well ‘informed operators, rather than our own, and we are Gnable to discover that these views are either ex- aggerated or untrue, ‘That they exist can be proved by a simple appeal to popular verdict or bya glance at the share list, which to-day quotes the preterred stock at 58 and the common at 85. ‘ We submit that these figures are a cheap expression Of values ifthe stock itself or its management is be- yond reproach. But the question arises, is not the company itself to blame for the existence of these prejudiced views in that it refrains trom furnishing the public with facts $n controversion thereof—an exhibit of its prospect, Ms business and internal condition—except at long and ancertain perioas? This very covermg up system in- rites suspicion and begets a feeling that there is some- thing concealed which will not bear the light. But there are other facts and impressions afioat which may be trae or may be false. In either caso they injuriously affect the stock. Imprimis there has been po dividend paid since Tune, 1873, when 33g per cent was divided upon the preferred stock, and there exista a ‘widespread belief thas even this was tuken from part 2 the proceeds of the sale of gold bonds. A belief provails that by some co-operative process the funds and stock of the Rock Island Ratlroaa are ‘used to carry the shares of the Northwestern Com- pany in the interest of ite speculative managers. ‘Tho fact is patent that its list of directers contains the names of noted speculators and stock jobbers, and {uith is wanting in the belief that 11s property is man- aged svlely in the interest of stockholders, The expected decision of the Supreme Court in the so-called Granger cases, it is thought, will be adverse to the company. Neo prospect of dividends on the common stock and Bo sale for shares except to cover shorts, It may be news to the compauy that these impres- Bons prevail, but, knowing them to do so, we sub- mit our statement to be correct, that the Northwestern road may be classed among such properties s® “are hopeless in respect to dividends and an incubus upon the hands of holders.” Next to Lake Shore, Delaware and Lackawanna showed to the fromt as an object of interest, though in a trowsy state, which grew worse as the day grew older, Opening at 70% \t gradually sank down to 6834, with a rally of 4 only ‘at the close, The depression is due to the forihcom- ing coal sales, through which medium a supply of 200,000 tons is to be led toa market at present totally devoid of appetite and, im fact, inoapable of further degiutition, The quiet strength, of tne favorite at the close ‘worked up the range of prices throughout the list, and the market finished with tair iis of additional firmness to-morrow.
