We have all heard and read Tupper, Dickens, Thack- eray and other British authors with much pleasure and protit; we are always glad to receive them among us, and itis to be hoped that they will ali be receive cording to their recognized merits, Mr. Tupper could scarcely tind words adequate to express his pleasure at finding himseit in the imidst of #0 mauy kind iriepds and acquaitances, 1t was a reat honor ior the speaker and ior his colleague, Mr. Bryant, to be so cordially ceived by the Kev. Mr. Talmage, whom he did not hesitate to designate as Spurgeon of America. (Applause.) It would bo falso modesty in the two poets to disavow their worthiness, in some measure, of the compliment that was being paid them. They bad labored bard tor twenty-five years, and, the speaker hoped, not in vain, to merit ihe praise that was wow Lestowed upon them, and he would do the people the justico of believing that their applause was sincere. In the twenty-five years which had passed since Mr. Tupper was in Amer. ica before many marked changes had taken place on ali hanes. The edifices, the hotels, the ferrybuats, the railroads and, above all, the Centennial Exposition, were to him so many new and wonderiul things that surprised him on every side. He was especially glad to note the improvement in religion, morals and man- ners Which it was easy to see marked the march of the American mind on the road toa bigher civilization. It is not now possible that any {ault-fnding novelist can come to this country and turn the manners of the people rato ridicule tor ihe world to laugh a Mr. Bryant heard with pleasure the sace observa- tions ot his brother poet, and was glad to know that tb wondertul improvement of Americans in the Vital mat- ters of religion, morals and manners had not escaped the observation of Mr. Tupper. When the latter was in this country some twenty-five years ago he was, like many other famous Engtishmen, able to do everything but make a speech, Now. however, bis improvement in this respect is quite remarkable, for he had just en- tertained the company during more than twenty min- utes jn telling them new aud startling truths which did not at first striko the Americun mind. CHARLES B. DELONG. The Hon. Charles E. Ye Long, ex-Minister to Japan died of typhoid fever, at Virginia City, yesterday. He was a native of Dutchess county, New York, Wheo about sixteen or seventeen y old he emigrated to California and settied in Yuba county. From a clerk ‘ma store he became a miner and subsequently held the office of Deputy Sherif, and during intervais studied law, After becoming of age he was elected to the Calfornia Legislature, and in that body distine guisbed himself asa ready anc able debater.
