BROOKLYN'S STORAGE RESERVOIR. After « recess of one week the members of the Brook- lyo Common Counci! met to resume the trial of William A. Fowler, the suspended Commissioner of City Works, Against whom Mayor Schroeder recently preferred sherges of nonfeasance with reference to the reservoir at Hempstead, Alderman French presided. Daniel Northup, Secretary of the Board of City Works, testi- fled that the late Mayor Kalbfeisch had vetoed the res olution passed by the Board of Aldermen tor the con- struction Of tho storage reservoir. The resolution was passed Just alter the Aldermen had visited the water sources at Hompstead and had found low water there. ‘Toe Common Council passed the resolution, overrid- ing the veto of the Mayor. iam Baird, a contractor, testified that he was ta- millar with earth excavation ‘and with ity value; knew What the value of soil excavation at Hempstead Reser- Voir wus in 1870, Witness was asked what the value was by the Corporation Counsel, and General R.A. Pryor, counsel tor Mr. Fowler, ovjected. Mr. De Witt said he would prove that a contract was made to pay 1,000,000 for a job which could bave been doue tor 000, Senerul Pryor argued that the contract was Made uiter advertising for bids in the pewspapers, and tbat it had been let to tue lowest biacer. Mr, Fowler ‘Was forced to sign 11, whether be indorsed it or not, be- cause it was the lowest bid ollered. ‘The objection was not sustained, aud Mr, Baird said that the ae. cost of the excavation steuld have 20 cents per cubic yard, iustead of SS ceute, as paid by the contract; brick work should have been $12 instead of $20; stone facing of she dum was $10, worth $5 or $6; the excavation of carth was worth from 28 to 80 cents per cubic yara if done by horse and cart, 10 cents less if done by machinery; broken stone and screened gravel was worth $1 per cubic yard, atom clay $2, lumber $50 to $60, insivad bt $100, as char ‘On the cross-exuinination the witness stated that ho had been engaged in public wagk yetwo years Mone aud with others. He was now doing work in Petersburg, Va., and Baltimore, Md. Witness bed bid recently lor the Work of facing tho Reservoir dam at 64 per cabic yard, bul the price was reaily $5 80; the price of labor 1a 1570 was Irom $1 26 to $1 75. The Board adjou.ned to meet this afternoon at threo o'clock. The price of the HERALD to-day “ana henerorl). will be three cents. THE BROCK MURDER TRIAL ‘The whole of yesterday was again taken up by the Prosecution in the trial of Oaciwald and Ryan, tho alleged murderers of Policeman Brock, at Newark. The idence adduced from halt adozen witnesses tended to knittbe net of circumstantial evidence more strongly than ever around the prisouer: BURNED TO DEATH.
