FLEETWOOD PARK. THAUGURATION OF THE OCTOBER TROTTING MEETING—KING “PHILIP THE WINNER OF THE “FIFTY” RACE—THE ‘‘THIRTY-EIGHT” PURSE POSTPONED AFTER THREE HEATS. The October trotting meeting at Fleetwood Park was Pleasantly and successfully inaugurated yesterday. Though the track was slightly heavy in the first hour -of the amusement, the great amount of brushing given it prepared the way for tue warm sunshine to put it in olerable shape. Short and sbarp work marked the ‘troductory contest, this being for horses of the “titty” class, purse of $500. Six of the eleven entries Fesponded, these being the brown gelding Dan Smith, Diack mare Carrie L., brown stallion King Poilip, Diack gelding Tom Molloy, brown gelding Thomas IT. and diack gelding Bruno, Speculation opened with the betting as follows:—King Philip, $21; Bruno, $13; field, $50, The King captured the first heat after a fair struggle up the stretch with Smith in 2:39. The adherents of the King made Dim the favorite over all tne others 3 to 1 before the Second heat, with which he was credited ia after Bruno showing the way for nearly three-quar- tersofumile. Tom Molloy iinished second, and it was ‘with apparent difficulty that his driver prevented him from winning the heat, as he was “pulled almost double” from the distance to the wire, The judges evidently made a note of this little matter, as when | ‘the contestants were called for the third hoat Molloy’s driver was ordered out of his sulky and Murphy sub- Btituted, which greatly pleased the adherents of the “fleld.” The pool then averaged—King Philip, $41 »Mol- aoy, $35; field, $4 There were really but the King and Molloy in the heat, as they went away from the others Bs they pleased, and after a capital struggle Philip out- footed his gallant competitor and landed the winner by Bwo lengths, Had Molloy kept his feet on the stretch At might have been a “tight fit” for the King. More Shan the usual satisfaction was derived trom the re- Bult of the heat, inasmuch as the victor cut down his Record from 50 to Just 18% seconds. That. Judges were right ia removing Molioy’s driver t ‘Tacts fully prov or @ppeared. These were the bay gelaiug Fa gelding Tom, black mare Sadie, sorrel gelding Little Frank, bay gelding J. D. and bay geldiug Henry. An- Dther peculiar and significant event. From late public eriormances Henry held the place of honor in tho iting, the averaged pools before starting being— lenry, 785; Little Frank, $50; Tom, $28; field, $2 he first heat was credited to Tom, who went to the front on the lower turn and had two lengths to spare from Honry, going under sbe wire in 2:36. The fancy Jor Henry Was not so great before the second heat @s he sold in the fleid, Tom and Liitle Frank being welected as choices, Tom $30, Little Frank $18, teld $28 Tom enc command just after the word was iven and kept until the stretch was. reached, when epry closed aecounts with bim and both wewt under the wire dancing in thé air, Henry baying half a length the best of i, The judges gave the heat to Tom, as his work had been the more honest. Belore so@ring for the third beat the judges relieved the drivers of Henry and Littie Frank from turther duty on the score that they were not trying to win, Murphy took his seat belind Henry, aud Jim Dustin in Litue Frank’s sulky. There Was at once a decline in the market on Tom, and tu one or two instances Henry sold almost even up with allthe rest. That the lauter was being rather strangely driven in the first and second heats Was proven in this, as he won the heat by two lengihs Irom Tom on a jog. Betore a fourth beat could be trotted darkness came on, and the decision of the race Was postponed unté.to-day at one o'clock, For their spirited and determined action in removing suspected drivers the judges had the thanks of the majority of the spectators, who desired to sce the “best horse win.” SUMMARY, Firetwoop Park, New Yorx, Tcrspay, Oct. 24, 1876—Finst Day or THe Octousr Trorrixe Muerixa.— Purse No, 1, of $500, tor horses that never beat 2:50, mile heats, three in tive, in harness; entrance ten per cent and only five per cent if declared out by the 2ist inst. ; $250 to the first, $125 to the second, $75 to the third and $50 to the fourth J.P. Naw York, Oct. 24, 1876. To rue Epiror or 7! Having noticed an article in the Hera.p of the 17th inst., in the form of a challenge trom Professor Bauer, 1 will explain it, Although said challenge was not accompanied by the necessary cash deposit to vouch for its sincerity, I will, with your permission, make the following statement in reply, accepting his chal- lenge on certaim conditions, Mr. Baver is weil aware that { am a professional collar and elbow wrestler, and with that knowledge be ventures to chalienge me in all other forms of wrestling, feeling assured that 1 will notaccopt. The majority of the peuple, not knowing the difference in the work, think him a wondertul man, he having so often challenged me and I not accepting. In this way I e been very much annoyed by him. In’ the preset proposition he ptirely ignores my mode of wrestling. Now if Mr. Bauer really means besiness and no job, I will give him an opportunity of testing his abilities in a fair, manly way, to settle the question as to who is the best general athlete, giving each man an opportunity of exercising his favorite hold, also testing both men in form where each are supposed to be novices. I will match him one fall, collar and el- vow; one fall, Greco-Roman; one fall, bide hold; one tall Back hold, and one fall, Catch as catch can. Fhp acopper each time lor choice of hold, the winner of three falls out of tho five to be the winner of the con- test; each aud every fall to be governed strictly by rales prescribed by Ed. James, of this city, The stakes to be from $100 to $500 on ‘eavh fall, or from $1,000 to $5,000 on the finul result of the contest, A+ competent man to be chosen for referee at time of signing articles. The match to take place at any time and place that may be hereafter agreed upon, not intertermg with my present engage- ments. Proceeds of the house to go to the winner of the contest, who shall pay hall Feat, rinting and ad- vertising. Should this mect auer’s views he will find both man and money dy at the Clipper office any day and hour he may designate. Yours, a Mt McLAUGHLIN. OCEAN STEAMERS.
