’ PINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. + ‘The Stock Market Active and Prices Generally Higher—A Strong Uncertone. GOLD STEADY AND FIRM AT 109 1-4 “Wone7 on Call 2 1-2 and 1 1-2 Per Cent—Gov- ernment Bonds in Better Demand at Higher Figures—Inyestors Look- ing After Railway Bonds, Wat Srxxer, Monpar, Oct, 16—6 P.M. The market grows slowly and steadily in strength and presages a season of flowers aud frui, Whether this time itwill be forced to maturity or be again Dlighted by the inconsiderate action of the stock yar- deners who are at present caring for it, the future will show, Suffice it that tor the last two days the quota- tons are becoming larger, burtiul rumors lees re- dundapt and confidence in tho future more genorally established. Much of the latter feeling comes from the belief that the antagonism of the railroads in the fame of rate-cutting must soon come to an end in View of the enormous grain treight offering and the prospect of an carly closing of canal navigation, There was but one stop to the upward speculation to- day, and that lay in the unexpected announcement over the wires of the death of Commodore Vanderbilt. Central Hudson and Lake Shore staggered under the nows, and quickly gave way to the extent of two por cent on the former and one por ceut on the latter, while the remainder of the list fell of a traction, A very brief period, however, suiliced to prove the falsity ofthe news and to explode the lie, and, with litle damage done, the market resumed !ts upward course, and so continued sicadily, and late in the day with pos- {tive buoyancy to the end. The bears were so pressed for time in the brief interval of doubt that they made but littie progress cither in putting out new short contacts, or in closing up old oncs, although there was opporiunity enough to see that, even were the re- port true, no consternation would ensue and no panic follow, Tho fact is that the demise of Mr. Vanderbilt, under tho circumstances of its possible or probavle effect upon the market, has been settied long ago in brokers’ minds, and the result figured out as clearly as the transit of a planet by an astronomer. Thore remains the hoax itself, which w simply a beartless outrage, heartless as trifling with the most sacred feelings of the family relation, and an ontrage on all who have lost money by its perpetration, Where the blame lies should be somebody's duty to iscover, and, if the executive members of the Govern- ing Committee can spare timo enough from their fiddle taddie with the coiling of the Long Room to take the matter in hand, they will confer a benefit upon not only the Board itself butapon the public at largo. The canard concerning the Commodore having been trapped and its neck wrung, the market was free to Tesume fis upward course, which it did, the coal stock being decidedly in advanco. Thus there was a gain of 4‘; per cent in Delaware and Lackawanna and of 3 in New Jersey Central, The Osborne-Mills party are again credited with at- tempting a repetition of their former movements, though there was evidence of free buying on tho part of shorts, not from compulsion, but from prudential motives. Lake Shore was again the favorite of the hour, and recovered two points of 11s recent depres- sion under the mentorship of the same combination. Ivas beginning to be considered unsafe to venture on the shoft side of this stock in view of its present and futare prospects, and bears roam with more boldness 4m the still uncertain precinots of the coal carriers, Pacific Mail, which had failen off nearly one per cent on the general depression, rallied but slightly at the close, though an unlimited amount of ‘‘chinning’’ and Draggadocio bidding was resortod to by its friends. Renewed difficulty was experienced in obtaining the coal siock ior delivery to-day; Delaware and Lacka- wanna commanding as high as in the loan market, while considerable amounts were bought in, under the rule, ata difference of % to sy per cent between cash and regular, Closing quotatio: and the prospect is for a further advance; but in the present artificial stato of the market any opinions for the future would be about as valuable aa those of an idiot on the “plurality of worlds" or of Boss Kelly on Baoecrit.
