! | AMUSEMENTS. STEINWAY HALL—THOMAS’ CONCERT. ‘The ninth popular concert of Mr. Theodore Thomas feok piace last night, at Steinway Hall, before an im- mense audience. Botably the orchestral selections, These consisted of the “Freischiitz” overture, Liszt’s symphonic poem, “Les Preludes,” the scherzo from the Reformation | symphony by Mendelssohn and Wagner's Centennial March. The masterpicco of Weber is so familiar to the orchestra of Thomas that the superb manner in Which it was rendered last night 1s what might bo ex- pected. Mendelssoun demands careful interpreters, Bnd therefore the finished style in which the quick Movement from his posthumous work was presented calls for the highest praise. Mr. Whitney failed to in- Yerpret ihe sentiment and artistic feeling with which Mozart bas invested Sarastro’s geand aria in “The Magic Flute,” the uria “In diesen heil’gen Hallen.”” Mr. Whitney bas a superb veice, but he lacks ieeling And expression. Ihe piano playing of Mr. Henry U, | Timm was anything but artistic, The geutle- da romanee aud rondo by Chopin, made atness of it The result was nature that one would naturally Surprised that Thomas would allow such « feeble p former to appear at one of his concerts, A well known conductor like Thomas cannot afford, without materi- ally injuring bimseit belore the public, to allow such @ Pianist as Mr. Henry C. Timm to appear at | one of bis concerts. The result as | bad as on the occasion of Tooker’s Russian Princess, at Booth’s Theatre, an Sunday night. Mr. Thomas ought to know better than allowing such an Antiquated pianist to appear at bis concerts. If New York w: arce of pianists there might be an excuse, Dut when there are here t a score superior to Mr. ‘Timm the conduct of Mr. uas toward the pudlic 18 Without tor Mr, Dudley Buck's treshy =m to equally — trushy Words, called tennial Meditation of Columbia,” we ago expressed our pinion about it, the greatest mistake of the Centenvial Committee at the tnauguration ever to ac- cept such stuff for masic, The same may bo said of the stupid bymn by the Boston Paine, Tne magnifi- ent “Halleiijan Chorus,” from the “Messiah,” which was a welcome reliet {rom the inanities of Buck and Paine, served as a weivome finale to the concert. Mr. Thomas should take « lesson from the experience which be bas hud at the Centennial LOUISE M. POMEROY AS JULIET, Last night Louise M. Pomeroy made her first appear- nce in this city at the Lyceum Theatre as Juliet, Tho ambition of the débutante we admire and her perform. fance deserves praise. The lady was well received, and ‘was called before the curtain frequently and certainly controlled throughout the play the sympathy of the Audience. Sheis young and must be called beauti- ful, her face is expressive of tho tcndercst feclings, er eyes bright und her smilo charming. Her cos umes were magnificent, and the ladies looked upon them with envy they vainly sought to con- ceal. Mozart's minuet in “Don Giovanni,” the finest, we think, ever written, but badly danced, Or not danced at all, served to introduce the first splen- @id costume, and one might say of Miss Pomeroy that Mhroughout the play sho seemed “a splendid angel, ly dressed, save wings, for heaven.” Asa débutante the lady was an unusually great suc- | poss, but as a Juliet sho was a faliure. Why do be- proners always bogin where an artist 1s satisfied to tnd? Juliet is of all the characters of Shakespeare one of the most difficult to perform. There 1s aomething that is repulsive in her boldness, her sensuous passion, Which not ber own apologies nor her youth and expe- Fience can extenuate. The play is with all its beauty, alter all, unpicasant, and tbe love in it is nothing like 88 spiritual asthe love of Hamlet” or “Othello,” or even of “Much Ado About Nothing.” It is earthly and animal. If Juhet bad survived her suffering and had lived wiih Romeo three years sho would bave turned out atermagant. Her love would have become jealousy, her jealoury hate, her hato fevenge, She would have probably proved to be & very poor wife, and Romeo would have been the champion henpeckod husband of Veroun. Suil the play (and we are glad to givo Shakespeare some credit for his ability), has great eloments of passion and of poetry, and these require genius for Abeir expression, Miss Pomeroy may possess genius, but we pot think she displayed it last vight in the most difficult of all the minor female rdles in Shakespeare, But there are other merits beside genius—youth, loveliness, appreciation, carnestness, intelligence, um- Vition, and these are qualiues of which Mies Pomeroy Appears to be possessed. We like ber Juliet, not- Withstanding its faults. lt diflered from ‘other Juliets in degree rather than in kind. In the earlier acts she wax particularly good, but In the tragic scenes the want of power and experience Was apparent. The scene in which Juliet drinks the ppiate was the bert of the more poweriul passages, but it bad not the strength which Adelaide Newson or Mrs. Bowers or Julia Dean can give it ‘the amateur is alwnys detected in tragedy, Miss Pomeroy, we believe, will certainly make a popu: lar actress in apy = line, but, it we might presome to judge of a lady by a single persona- thon, we should say that her power lies in comedy, and to that we should think it would be wise for ber to direct her atiention. Sho certainly did not fail last Bight in the opinion of tho theatre; but, with all her Merits, eLe should be contented with nothing less than absolute succe: Mr. Lingham was not a satisfactory Romeo. Mer-utio was played with spirit and over elaboration by Mr. J. B. Roverts. e best performance of the evening Was that of the Nurse, by Mrs. Jordan, BROOKLYN THKATRE, The comedy combination now playing at the Brook- lyn Theatre appeared last night in “Lhe School for | Beandal,” before u very fuir audience. The cast was a Femarkuble one for even this favorite house, Mr. John Gilbert xppeared in his famous part of Sir Peter Teazle, and was, of course, successtul in bringing out all the favorite points of that character. Indeed, the scenes in which he bad a share bad a real Wallacktan flavor, Moss Catharine Rogers, as Lady Teazle, was bewitching im her beauty and dress, and she proved to be quite ‘familiar with the traditions of the par. in quarrelling with Sir Peter she wus saucy yet lady-like, aud in the more serious scenes of the comedy shuwed ‘her strength as an actress in sacseing abundant force and tire. Mr. £. Dyas, as ir Gliver, gained many honors, for he looked and acted the character to perfection.’ Miss Maud Harrison Was a very charming Maria, and spoke her lines intel- ligently and with iceling Mr. Daly. as Joseph, and Mr. E. Lamb, as Backbite, were good, though Mr. Mur- dock did pot make a very appreciable Charlies, Mrs, Farren, as Mrs. Candour, was all hat coula be desired, ugh that is small praise for so good an actr ht Goldsin! with a star cast. OLYMPIC THEATRE. An entirely new bill was presented at this house last Bight. Songs, dances, banjo solos, banjo duets, ven Sriioquism and sketches mage up the programme Benodict and Waite appeared in @ laughable sketch, entitled ‘“Jeflersou and Booth. Miss Alice Daily and Miss Alicia Jourdan were tavorites among the song- eters, James Messenger periormed some wonderful feats with cannon bails, Buckiy and Turner oom bined a danjo duet, Griflin aud Rice sang “When Twilight Falls? a mew song, with effect, und were twice recaliea;’ Frank c & jabman went “Over the Hills to the Poorhouse” and Gorman and Romer sang a German song. Sam De- ‘vere's admirers paid no respect to the request prinied at the head of the programine “not to ask for than three songs in ono turn,” and continued te Bim out until could come out no more, His ta- mous song, “A Leaa Hanan», brought down the house, nd his poetical version of the Brooklyn scandal, tuid with the assistance of the banjo, was very enjoyable. | he Program closed with the thrilling nautical drama of “Tne Lonely Man of tho Ocean."”’ THEATRE COMIQUE. / A brilliant variety bill was offered to acrowded house Bt this place Jast night “The Power of Music’ Dpened the show, and after extraordinary feats ot balancing by Frank Livingstone, and German eccen- Wicities by Bonnie Runnels, “Walking for dat Cako’’ was brought on. It is seldom eo trutuful and exquisie ‘There were many attractive features, | Germany to adopt the “invisible orchestra’? of Wag- ner, or rather Grétry, with whom the idea originated. Charies Adama, the Boston tenor, has taken Ham- | burg by storm. Mme, Nilsson announces a concert tour through Belgium, France and Holtand on the 4th of Nevember, under Ullmanu’s management. “Oar Boys’? bas had the longest consecutive ran on record at the London Vaudeville, and it ts likely to meet with @ similar success at tho Chestuut, Phila- deiphia, A musical and Mterary entertainment was recently given in the palace of the Russian Czarowitz for the benefit of the Servians, the receipts of which amounted to $16,000, Donadio, Who was one of Strakosch’s sngers here during the Albani season, made her first appearance in Moscow on September 11 as Aminaia “La Sonnam- bula.’? The probability of losing Adelina Patti this season has caused intense excitement in Russian operatic circles, and if the resolution of her physicians not to permit her to brave the rigors of a Russian winter be adhered to the season of Italian opera at St. Peters- burg and Moscow will doubticss prove a cisastrous one. Last night Professor Cromwell gave the first of a series of art entertainments at the Masonic’ Temple. The right’s entertainment was the reproduction of the cities, castles and romantic woodlands of Germany. Several scenes on the Rhine, including remains of ruined feudal castles, w exhibited in the “Mirror of Nature,” asthe Professor calls it, with remark- able vividness, and seemed quite as vivid as the originals, OBITUARY. DIJELALEDDIN PACHA. - A cable telegram from Kagusa, under date of the 16th inst, reports that Djelaleddin Pacha, commander of a division of Turkish troops under Moukhar Pacha, has died of wounds received {n act:on. Ho was of middle age, an able soldier and devoted tothe cause of the Sultan and his dynasty. He was sevorely wounded in one of the recent batties in the East, and carried from the fleld in almost a dying condition. GENERAL QUINTIN QUEVEDO, The death of General Quintin Quevedo, a noted public man of Bolivia, at Puno, Peru, is announced by mail from Lima, Queveao was a soldier, statesman and poet at the samo time, but had an insatiable thirst for revolutionary schemes. In every revolt which Bolivia has suffered from during tho past twenty years Quevedo was the leading spirit, Still, his private character was 80 amiable as to cause his loss to be generally regretted. The Peruvian General Secretary of State, Doctor Oblitas, caused sumptuous funeral éeremoaies to be held at La Paz in honor of General Quevedo. Althouga Quevedo was ub active conspirator against ‘the powers that be’? in Bolivia, Oblitas generously forgot his offences in view of his merit “General Quevedo has served the country honoral home and abroad. Nothing can be more proper than to manifest our regret at the death of aman whose place cannot be readily filled.”? EDWARD WIGGLESWORTH.
