ANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ¢ Stock Market Dull and Prices Irregnlar— A Slight Flurry in Pacifie Mail. GOLD STEADY AT 109 Money on Call 4 Per Cent—Government Bonds Firmer—Bailway Bonds Moderstely Active and Steady. Watt Staeer, Twurapar, Oct. 12—6 P.M. Apparently the leaders of the bull movement have faken a holiday this morning, for there is little evt- dence of their handiwork, as the contracted list of transactions will show. Li ing strings the market has been inclined to trip and Mambie at every obstacle, and has brought up at the Glose rather the Worse for the promenade. ‘The hunters of the ball party, who have bean potting Deara wherever there were symptoms of « favoravie Dattue, got what sport they could by beating up the St Paul covers, carrying up the common to 203; and the pre- ferred to 6934, but on the appearance of Twenty-Third Street ordering them Off the premises by an exhibition ! short stook they abandoned the field, and the specu- Jation was left as dull asa preserve in the close sea- son. So it happened that both sorts of stock closed at a decline of one per cent trom the above prices, despite the privately circulated intormation that this week’s earnings would show a manifest improvement upon ‘the last. Lake Shore and Michigan Central both showed, in their abandoned state, signs of the abomination of Gosolation, this objectionable quality cropping out in @ lower seale of prices and in a notable weakness. The game story may be told of all the other railways, which were feoble aud langutahing, with nover a bright spot to enliven the monotony of the day. Pacific Mail at one time betrayed an inclination to exceptional high jinks on its own account; but the hilarity was of brief duration, and only sufficient to tarry the price from 233g to 2434, at which latter poimt the joke was lost sight of, aud buyers laughed on She wrong side of their mouths when the stock tell again to 23%, and stayed there, It is probuble, never- theless, that a movement in this fancy is contem- plated, to be based upon the favorable showing which, It 18 stated, will be made of its condition, and upon the anticipated enteste cordiale which 1s to unite the Dlashing interests of Panama Railroad, Panama Transit and the Pacific Mail companies. There wasa decline of one point in Delaware and Lackawanna and of two in Jerscy Central, both stocks \o-day being attended by fewer friends and more ene- mies, Touching the first named, the Osborn-Mills Party are now said to be ranged in the latter category, and are prepared for the worst in case of a slump, which it will not be their fault should it fail to take place’ The Central concern was decidedly shaky and rejused to resist the offerings of long stoek, which, ramor bas it, were the holdings of the now President, Mr, Knight, who, possessing him- Self of some 10,000 shares on, bis accession to office, has, on examination, failed to find any prizes in his Package, and is willing to turn his bargain over to More sanguine believers. Prices were all off at the close, and the market fin- fehed ina very shpshod condition. The ball party have mado a brilliant crusade, it is true, but it has been too brief to attract recruits trom outside the Exchange. This tact will necersitate bolder measures and more urgent efforts on its repetition, for the pub- Uo bas once more beon taught that the recent rise was mot the gold of real prosperity, but the glitter of Manipulation, and, as such, not to ve trusted. ‘THE SALKS TO-DAY.
