‘4 THE COURTS. es Singular Accusation Against a German Pastor. A Charge of Swindling the Pension Bureau. Marrying in Haste and Repenting at Leisure. Investigating the Affairs of the Old Erie ailway Compa Acase in which a German pastor named Rudolph Wiecszorck, charged with conspiring with Bernardina Finek and Barbara Eisele to de!raud the go ment of @ pension, was yesterday on trial before Judge Benedict in the United States Circuit Court. The Pension stood in the name of one Barbara Reich. From the facts elicited trom the opening of the case by United States District Attorney Foster it appeared that in April, 1870, Barbara Reich, whose son died while serving in the Union Army, was awarded a pen. sion of $8 per month. This sum she regularly drew up to the time of her death, which was in December, 1875, The ‘act ot her decease, however, remained un known to the Pension Office, and the pension cot tinued to be regularly drawn. ‘In September last thorities were notified of tho circumstance: sage, and whe im was next made jor the pe: of Mrs. Reich the applicant and her witnesses were rested ‘by uty Marshal Crow! It was then dis- povered, ai jeged, that the pension certificate of Mra. Reich haa yn fraudulently obiat by the prisoner Wieczorck, wh Et for a small considerat ceased, and another woman, to appear as a witness. Wieczorck wan “bis arrest and several pension certilicates belonging to different persons were found on his person, and it is supposed toat these were also fraudulently obtained. Wieczorek is a German “pastor” by profession and was @ member ol the noted company of ‘straw bail’’ vperators who flourishod fcra long time in the neigh- borhood of the ity Hal, and which was broken up ed the arrest of John Volez. ‘the latter is now awaiting trial in the United states Coart on a charge of perjury, and Wieczorck is one of bis witnesses. Bernerdina Finck is a legitimate pensioner of the government, she being tho widow of a soldier, and she, together with Barbara Eisele, were probably the dupes of Wieczorck, who represented to them that it was all right. In the tase of Barvara Eis nolle prosequi was entered by Seneral Foster. ‘The hearing of the case had not ter- minated at the adjournment of the court. HASTY MARRIAGES. Searcoly a day passes that there is not exemplified in the courts the force of the old and well known apothegn—marry 1m haste and repent at lelsure, A rather striking instance, but as the case turns out compelling a very uncomfortable ext jon of the re- Pentant period, is afforded in the brief matrimonial experience of Mra. Laura Wolfsohn, née Miss Laura Klein, According to her story, on the 28h of May, 1875, sne was married to Richard Wolfsobn. 8! on that Wolfsohn represented himself to her as bein; man of good character and worth $15,000, and ti 5 on such represeutations she married bim. Alter the marriage she discovered, as she avows, ‘hat his character was bad, and that he was impecunious, aod on this ground she sought to bave tho marriage annulled. A suit was brought for this purpose and the same was tried belore Judge Van Vorst at special term of Superior Court. Judge Van Vorst gave his decision yesterday, in which be dis- missed the complaint. The toliowing, from the opinion, not only explains the reasons for arrivin; d this conclusion, but embodies an instructive mort thi contemplating entrance into the Diteimonial est “Before ring upon the marriage the plain- tiff should have informed herself both as to the charac- ter and m ot the defendant, and if she blindly relied upon representations she cannot properly ask Court to release her from a solemn marriage 80 heediossly formed. It would not answer to make this case a precedent for dissolving a marriage upon such grounds. * * * If judicial favor was given to this appitcation it would open the door to a ciass of cases not heretoloro entertained and disturb the sanc- hs ith which the marriage bond shot be regarded, It fs not to be annulled upon gro repre- 8 ns, which are sufficient to cancel an ordinary contract.” THE ERIE RAILWAY OOMPANY. Judge Dononue, holding one of the branches of the Supreme Court, Circait, has no disposition, it appears, to make a judicial examination into the affairs of the Erie Railway Company under the régime of Fisk and Gould. In th Archer, the yesterday's 's account, which he would committee in order toget out the Watson dkontts.
