An Active Stock Market and Higher Prices— Advance in the Coal Stocks. GOLD LOWER AT 110 A 10978. EAE ORE eS Government Bonds Active—Rail- way Bonds Firm. Wat Street, } Wapyaspay, Oct. 4—6 P.M. Better to have been a dweller in the bear pit at Berne, clambering up a pole in quest of oleemosynary cates, than to be the bipeds of the same species who have been climbing for coal stocks on the floor of the Btock Exchange to-day. Whether the major or minor, the dig one short on seller sixties or the little one bn soller threes, Ursus bas been stirred up by a long pole, to the delectation of lookers on and to the profit of the bulls, It 1s evident that the Osborn-Mills party mean busi- ness, and to-day they havo attended to it faithfully. It is true they stand alone in the bull movement; that there is no help from that myth, the public, and tnat the whole fracas is nothing better than a “street! ght; but they Lave nevertheless produeed ascare that bas frightened their foos into tits. Certainly a foray of this description was never better timed than at the present, in view of the enormous short interest prevail- tng especially iu the coal properties; but the shorts are no fool: they seo a shower approaching. Whether the jongs Will be equally \ucky in getting out of their holdings when the bears have covered their contracts and legitimate buyers jare found wanting, is ® point to be tettied hereafter. Meantime the coalition is rebears- ing 1s pari—it may be that of a modern Crasus; or, bn the contrary, that of a reconstructed Atlas bearing tpon his shoulders a world of unsalable stocks. Asif “enough” were vot ‘tas good as a feast,””, the dull combination is credited with having gone Centen- Mialward fora dash at Reading, with purchases at from 20 a 22, and an advance of the price to 25%, which is the highest Philadelphia quotation of to- flay. ‘The fluctuations in New Jersey Central and Delaware and Lackawanoa have formed a gamut of quotations Doth up and down the scale which only a reference to the official list of sales can give any idea of. Tue extremes of the first were marked by and 35, and of the second by 674 and 714s, these figuros being tho result of prodigious transactions, aggregating 34,000 shares for Central and 98,500 for Delaware. At the very slose the latter stock was bid sharply up to 713, by the clique, thus punishing the remaiming shorts severely and sending them home as disconsolate as tho V’eri at the gate of Eden. AS on yesterday, public interest was completely absorbed by the coal stock speculation, Lake Shore and the other railroad fancies remaining firm with trifling variations in price. Ohio and Mississippi were a shade better to-day, and lost tho weakness of yesterday under the recovery of the second mortgages from 50 to 65, although the bears prophesy lower figures and as- scrt that tho interest, though paid, was not earned. The recent decline iz Rock Island has been some- what of a mystery to the strect, and in casting about for the reasons thereof the discovery has been made that an unusual amount of stock is now held under hy- pothecation by the banks. Inquisitive persons are asking whether investors have been quietly slipping out or whether the company itself has been a seller of the whole or any part of the 45,000 shares which they notified the Board several years since of their Intention to issue, The right of the corporation to make such \ssue is unquestioned, but it would be interesting to know if it has been done. The St. Paul stock yielded a trifle under the showing at decreased earnings, but the general market was (oo jtrong to allow of much backsliding in anything. Although aless number of shares were bought in ponder the rule for default of delivery the premiums paid for borrowed stock were quite as great as ever. Delaware and Lackawanna loaned at 'y to \, New Jersey Central 4 to 14 and Delaware and Hudson \ to 36 per cent for one day’s use All sorts of rates were made on seliers’ options, at from 34 per cent for 10 days to 4 per cent for 60 days, and tn the case of Delaware and Hudson the differences were still more extreme, Some o! the bears undoubtedly wish that ‘‘to-mor- row"? would never come; for, though It psonin petty pace,” its arrival is suro, and likely to be an- welcome to the proprietors of short contracts. Another twist to the machine is anticipated which will cause some squirming and evolve in imaginative minds lively recollecticns of the Inquisition, with its thumbscrew and rack. THK SALES TO-DAY.
