THYS SHOULDER-UITTING, DALLOT-STUFFING VET- ERANS. Special Dispaich to The Tridune. ' InpraNarouis, Oct. 4.—The Uulon soldiors wha, in theatrical phrase, arc billed to makea demonstration here to-morrow for SBammy Til- den arc as yet remarkably scaree, and it is casl- 1y foresecn that the principal part in tho affair will be sustained by, those who, as Knizhits of the Goldou Circle and Sons of Liberty, conspir- ed to open the fire. g tha rear upon the Union soldicry; but the patriots who ace gotting ready to atufl sho ballot-boxes and do the repoating for Sammy are already liero in formidabic nuwm- Dbevs, of courae to xttend the Democratic soldlers reunion, and never ju the history of this city has thero been assombled such a collection of rounders and shoulder-hitiers as are here to- night. Tney bave been gatherlog here for o weak past, and dally therearcaccessiuns to thelr numbers, and the character of the whole lot s pretty woll indicated by thie catalogue of DALTIMORE JAIL-BIRDS cn route hero which was published in to-day's TripuNe. That eminent reformer, Barney Anron, of Chicogo, this evening takes the troublo to correct the lnpression that has got abroad concerning this extraordinary gatherlhg hercof short-hafred, pug-nosed gentry with heavy under jaws and low, narrow forelicads, Said Barney, with the plaintive air of a man who ask- cd only that, having been grievously misrepre- sented, bo might be pet right: *1sce Tuz TrIBUNE printed a lot of atufl about my comlug here with a gang of rougha to carry the State. I only wish we could carry {t, that's all; but I ean tell you what they are coming liere from everywhero for, that Is to stop theimported niggers from votlog, I tell you thero will be a bundred men at every poll to prevent that, and I shouldn't wonder if there were gome niggers Kkilled here on election-day, but that's ouly my surmise." ; There is no mistaking what these distingulsh- cd champions of the purity of tha ballot are here fe MIt, SAMUEL LANDS MILLS, JR., of Baltimore, who, i he chose, might tella great deal about ballot-stufllog in that city, explained it to-day to an officer from that city thusly: *Well, I sco I've becn glven away, but I don't carea d—n. ThisIndlanaclection isono of those that s gofng to be carried by fraud anyhow, sud we are golng tocarry it. Now let's see you catch us if you can.” Gen, George W, McCaudless, who, unless his reputation sadly belles him, also knows atl sbout ballot-stuliing in Philadeiphia, it is ob- servod has been here for some time ostensibly canvassing some of the strongest Democratic countles in the State, where, of course, it is de- sired to double the regular Democratle majori- ties. A gangof PHILADELPHIA AND PITTSBURG ROUGLS, who have had experlence in multiplying Demo- cratic majoritics, is roported as coming hero to further enlighten the Deniocratie undorstand- ing us to how that same multiplication of the Democratlc vote may be accomplished. The Democratic 8tate Cominittce has lssued n private clreulue warnjug Domouvrats to boou thelr guard against certain frauds, and these same frauds and inguntous devices for ballot- stufling are deseribed with such auggestive min- utenoss that {n ten minutes from the $ime of reading tho dreular any man could aster the whole art of uallot-stufiing. Thon, to sllence the qualns of conscionce of those of the timid sort, thy Democratic orators aud orgaus are making wholsale charges agalust the Repub- MNeans of the hnportation of niggers, plans for ballot-stufiing, aud the like, all of which is de- sigued to Inspiro the notlon of FIGUTING TIIE DEVIL WITU FIRE, andof out-cheating thochcats, which they charge the Republicans are contriving, The plaln fact that is uow sclf-cvident is that the Tanmany tactics as to carrylng olections are ta bo put i practice hore to'carry the State for Tilden, und that the roughs to do the work are already hero from the sinks of the great citica, The Deme- cratfe Soldiers’ Reunion aifords them TIE CONVHNIENT PRETEXT and oppostunity to get here, and thoy have come ubd are comiig to fmprove it to the utmost. They have only furgotten one thing,— that 1s, that the polics and the courts here uro not under the control of a Tllden Twnwmany Ring, and that inconsequence there is asplondk opportunity for ballut-stutlurs and repeaters to break into the State's Prison. TUB CII0AGO DELROATION arrived at 10.0'clock, and wera et at the dopot by sparsu delcgatious of Tilden and Hendricks torch-bearore. On the way hore a number of tlglits occurred.. Mike Madden, of the North Blde, who was l‘-rcmllly released from the Coune ty Jull, pounded and” choked ongof the Ser- geunts. Among the select veteraus, In addic tion to Madden, were Tip Furrel, Atike Cor- coran, Jim McHale, Jimwmy Casey, Johnny Ber- ry, Walt Crawford, sud Johiuny Comfort. Thess men wero recognized in line when. marching down Hlinols strect. As the gang scatter after reaching the Hates House, it will be im- possible untll” to-morsow to tell exactly how many of this kind of soldiers and sallors Chica~ £0 senda to the Conventlon. The advance guard of the delezation was com- posed of forty-five men, exclusive of a band and drum corps. ~ Among; thetn arc some of the best- known ruftiaus in Baitimore. Nomorcthan ten of the entire party ever served in the Unfon army, anl thoso were mostly deserters or bounty-jumpers, One of the number has been seversl timee in the Btate Penltentlury, and has been frequently convicted of burglarics and wssaults, ife haa always _ heen able to secure a pardon becauge Lic wis a Demo- crat, Another leader in the detachment s a Deputy Warden in the City Jail, and had the reputation of u bounty-jumnper during the War, Another prominent chiaraster is sald to have killed two men in strect-fiznts, and 1s vu? desperate. MISSOUKI'S QUOTA. i Spectal Dirpatch 2o The Tridune. Quincr, 111, Oct. 4.—A large number of Mis- sourl ex-Confederates pusst tlu-uu&h this clty to~anIfl. en route for_the Tilden and Hendricks reunfon at Indjauapolis. THE EXODUS. DEPARTURE OF TIE BALLOT-DOX STUPFERS FOR INDIANAPOLIS. It was a hootinig, howling mobwhich departed yesterday morning from the ‘depot corner of Clinton and Carroll streets, via the Chivago & Vincennes Raflroad, for Indianapolls. They called the mob the Chicago Veterau Reform Asgociation, and & worse mlanomer never was given toany crowd. It is true there werc o few respectables in the party. They hesded the proceesion, and included Nevans' Dand, Col, Baldwin, Gens. Lieb, Cameron, and per- hops 100 others. But most of the 100 or more had never smelt powder, except on the Fourth of July, and large numbers of them wereknown durlug the Waor as the most andent Coupperhicads. When this respectable body Is spoken of, the remainder of the crowd may be hrought into notfce. Of all the offscourings of the slums of Chicsgo, the worst departed for Indianapolis. ‘There were flfteen coaches used for the occa- slon and ouc flat-car, upon which Lippincott’s brass six-pound field-piece was plaged on wheels and spiked fast. This formidable monster was wikler th¢ control of C, R. Crossman and s gun- ner's squadl. Tho procession was to bave left the Palmer House at 8:30 o'clock, but the organization of ruch a mob into anythiug like decent order took time. The North 8ide sent a delegation so no- torfously bad that the others would not march with it. The first delcgation reached the dopot in the following order: Nevans' Band; the respectables; 8S veterans; 320 veterans who never siuclled powder; a delegatlon of 100 from Milwaukee, Including 40 of the worst looking roughs that city had to contribute: 50 Tildenltes from Iowa, in tow of Capt. J. A. Crawford and John Kaufman; the rag-tail element, and tho Tilden legion. = This motley crowd balted in frout of tne Léud Works on Clinton strect. ‘The mob which lind followed the processiun was nothing in comparison to that which occupled the platform. It was the most God-forsaken rabble that waa over gathered together. Motley would not describe ft. It was a massing of sneaks, plmps, bLallot-box stuffers, and the lowest crowd of blncklugs that a metropoli- tan city like Chicago could produce. Every one of this mob wore o Vetersn Reform Assoclation badie, and not onc ever knew anything of sol- digrhug excopt a8 descrters and bounty- umr s, Imuginesuch veterans as Georee W, Curley— Ed Phillips' right bower, Jim Mcilule, Gue Bussc, Tip Farrell, M. Corcorun, and others of like ik, It hos been ‘stated at tho outset Lhat there wore a few respectubles {n the party, and o few—very few—veterans, THE DECENT ELEMENT tuetnselves, Of the fifteen coaches, twelve of them had some wuslin bunting on the outslde. The Eighiceath War cmpticd 1ts slums and hell-holes to furnish its quota, which cume fn the sccond grucuanhm, headed by a drum corpe. They numbercd some 350, A description ot them may not be amiss, They wers uniformed in red flanncl shirts and white cups, and carbicd torches. Ther physt- ognomics would betray themn anywhere.” A latge percentage of them are profeasional rluz- nghus. thieves and ballot-box stuffers. Man, of them were spotted s poted repeaters, ang are casfly rocognized as the gani which was under tho rule of the Hatch House clique In the duys of 1ts existence, Words cannot express the disorder of this North- 8ide mob. ‘Ihey were of the very worst element. which that side of the city could produce. Awmong them also were the thivving guinine of the ward, hard youths, whose very faces showed them well' verscd fn rascality. Tho were hired to wo, and go they would, Aside from the 1,000 that had badges und who boarded the train there were many who had noncand in- alsted upun golng. There wa s atill another eloment which wanted freo rides to Indian- apolis and wers golug anyway, They threatened all menner of trouble by vccupyluz seats, Bome of the more decent In the party wanted twoor threvof the cars switched off, and at ons time trouble was threatened, Im- menso confusion was caused by the distribution of 500 badges to a cluss of outsiders, who were looked down upon becatise they could not futly claim compandouship with the howling mob who liad tuken possession of the train, But they got rid of thelr badges, aud sent tho worst roughs that could be drummed up. 1t took nearly two hours to get the “veterans” in tho “ears, and then they were mnot ready. Whisky bottles were “plenty, aud many of thy angwcrn well primed with villainous “budge hefuru they entered the cars, Ottawa, TiL, sent adolegation of sixty, with Bocl's City hund. ‘This cruwd wore bliw capes und Contlnental hats. They were Hulct, though there was prob- ably not an ex-soldier In the varty, Milwaukee had two wen fn the ranks who dishonored the blus by GRNNIHK in the ranks with it on. The suits fooked suspiclously new, and were, no doubt, obtutned for the veeasion, us both were old toen, und the unifurms wers doubtless put on for eltcet, Iy The lows mob came from Davenport aml Burliugton, and the less sald of them the better will 8 b for the eredit of the State, 1t was not till nearly 11 o’clock that the mob was beated in the cara, They enjoyed them- selves by swigaing bad whlskx smoking, swear- ing and yelling, One of the Wilwaukee fellows acknowledged that some twenty of his gang were had cars b NOT COMING BACK till after the clection, aud that they get two dollars per day fur thelr service ‘us” bullot- box stuflers and repeaters, ‘Titden's corruption fund has been used to semo ndvantage, His agents in this ety have suceceded In cavelgling r_ fow respoctabiles, but thoy arenet need- ed further than ta give the thing tune; they have gathered the worst mob-clament n alllmq;u. und theso urs befng trausported free to Indlonupolls, and given free” grub and diink, Onee in Indlana, they sre to be pwsted tn all the Democratie distrlets " to swell nisjoritics. There was trouble just before, and Capt. Crawford, of lowa, Gus Buese, Gen. Lieb, aud others held a briel council of ‘war, It was all becsuse un badged mortals were crowding out the badged: ones. A committee went through the cara an compelled a lnrge number to get off, which they did mluctnnu'y. One thing should here bs mentioned: Mayor Ilcath revoked the liconacs of the West Slde varfety dives a few days ago. This throw vpon thelr own resourcesalarge corps of broken= downand disreputableshow people. These allob- talned free transportation to Indinnapolis. A remarkable thing about them 1s that they are all yeterans,—vetesran objects of suspicion,—an: that they belonged to regiments of which no- body ever heard. However, they helped to awell the crowd, and that fs ail that wos wanted, The traln of fifteen cars which held the un- ruly mob moved {off slowly, and occasional atops were made, In onler that some one with- out a badge mlgh he kicked off. AN ACCIDENT, Shortly after the cars got under way the fleld- Vlecs on tho open car was loaded, Peter McQGee, Tom Foley'sthartender, was lctl:g 08 rammer, He had” scarcely finished loading when the car gaye a sudden”joit. On Inst Bundny morning the news reached ne that a riot had vcenrred near Chovtaw Agency, in Oktibbeha County, and that severa! pursuits Liad been killed and wounded. On Monday evening following a dispatch was recelved of this point asking for helv; that the negrocs In lurge bodfes were niarching on Starkviile to at- tack i, In the course of Inlf an hour another dispatch was recelved, statlng that the negroes were leaving for their iomes, and that ansist- ance was not needed. From s gontlemon living at Starkviile, we inve the most positive assur- ance that the negroes hiad not assembled any- where fn the county on that day, and that theso dispatelics worg scnt out Lo create an erronecus impresalon, and to cover up, aa far as possible, the dark aud Lloody deeds comenitted on a Re- pubilicun club on last Saturday wght. As to the particulurs of the borrible scene that occursed at Chapel Hil), wo were guided . with tho sule dusire to ascertain the absolute facts In the case, and wo now proposeto give it o the pu&lluq -: r:‘l,uled"hy 2;: |wlmcules: h Saturday, the 234 tnet., the colored peoplo of the Chapcl Hlll Club et at. thelr usia I::lu:e of meethg to appoint delegates to the ongressional Convention wiich had been called to meet at Okolona on the 27th to nominate a candidate for Congress, Theclub had been In sesslon but a very short time when a_body of armed white men entered the bullding, * and- commnenced cursing the Chalrman nm? other leading members, and told them that the beat~ ingz of drums had to ccase, that they had been riding for hours to catch up with the drum, that it looked too much like war-times, and that they were tired of drum-beating. The Chalr- man of the club, seeinz that no business could be transacted while these hostlle demonstra- tions were going on, adjourned the mecting, with the umlcumndln;x among the colored poo- lo that thoy would reassemble azaln after xfirk completa the Luslness left unilnished. The crowd thon dispersed, and so ended the first act. of Amu dmmn. i t ceording to the spreement the Republican Club reassenbled at thelr dub-room after dark, and organized their meeting on the outslde of the church for fear that those white men might return, slip up on and shoot them through win- dows and door, A small firc had been kindied hetween the church and the road, and, whilo oue of the members was addressing thu club {rorn the steps of the church, the Whita Lincrs slipped quictly up the road, luwh:fi left thelr horses down In a swampsome little distance off, and fired Into the crowd, Killlag one dead on the spot and wounding thirty-six more, four of whom are thought to te murwlli' wounded. At the first fira the colored prople scattered In every direction completely paulc-stricken, All the killed and wounded were shot in the back, for the crowd when the firing commenced wero facing the speaker on the' churcl-steps, and with thelr backs to the rond where Jay the as- passins concealed by an embankment. An evidence that “ the colored people wero taken unawares and had mot fired a single shot Is that they had carrfed some cignt or ten guns with tiiem to the church to protect themselves In enss they were attacked, and had et their guns azuinst the church; but, on running away under u terrifle fire, they icft their guns standing by the church, and, on ex- aminution, it was discovered that they had not been tired, and that they were all loaded with three exceptions. And, us auother evident fact, an the opposlte side of the road, where theso white men lay concealed, and Unmediately in the rear, staod a fence and frame building, and, hind the negroes fired a single shot, it would hinve left {ts mnrk, But, on a careful Investiga- tion by witnesses and the Deputy-Sheriff of tho county, not o aingle bullet-mark could be dls- covered anywhere 1o thue rear of the assassina Iying concenled in the road., The church in ront, where the negroes were standing, was It~ eraily riddled with bullets, but, on the building and fence Just in the.rear, whero tho white men stood, not nsolitary trice of a bullot could be found. How strange had the negroes been tho agpressors; yet ft is true one negro was Killed dend on the spot aud thirty-six Were wounded. All the evidence that we have heen able to gumcr clear]y polnts to the undenlable fact that hose white men went there for theexpress pur- ose to murder the members of the Ropublican lub, andto destroy the Republican oruization in the county. The large hulk of the Hepub lican voters of Oktlbbeln County reslde near Chapel 1ill, aud to makoe certuln of the demor- allzation nmong the negroes, it was necessary that thu bullet should do the bloedy and cowardly work. There can be no excuse or putiiation for this wholesale sluughter of fnno-~ cent people, whose only ceime was that they wero’ Republicans and’ would have voted for Hayes and Wheeler. i ‘The rcron. that these white men were invited to attend the club meeting, and that the colored people had thrown out pickets with the fu- structions °* to shoot any white mau who might approach, absolutcly false in .evary respect. Wlen tha Deputy Sherdft and his 1)0!!!0"11’[""] ut the scena they found all the white tnen gathered around thi desd body of the negro, and all of them were drunk and armed. Tiio leader of tho gang told tho Deputy Sherlff that thero were 500 negroes noar by, and they were expecting an at tack every minute, The Deputy and his posse started for the visionary blacks ‘and scoured the wliolo country, but they could tlnd no one cx- vept those shut, who were t?lng to gt home. The names of the assasuins fliave all boen taken, and o list will be placed in the hauds of the Unlted States Marohal, A specdy trial {s do manded byall good and law-ablding people, and, if found guilty of the chiarge of murder, they should be made to pay the penalty, The lowest, the meanest, the most God-forsaken specimen of humanity is the sueaking, cowardly assassin, be he white or black.
