NEW YORK DAY. The Citizens of the Empire State at the Centennial Exhibition, The Largest Attendance Ever Known. GOVERNOR TILDEN’S RECEPTION. Imposing Parade of the Police. Puttapxruta, Sept. 21, 1876, “Im accordance with the programme of the Centennial Commission, by which cach of the original thirteen colonies is to have Sts special day at the Exhibition, to-day was set apart for New York, Tho arrangeme’ with the ratiroad companies and the various mu bodies for having a large attendance from the towns and cities of the State have been heretofore described in tho Henat, with the proposed programme of to- day’s celebration. All the plans seem to have been carried out successfully, many thousands of people were enabled to see the nibition who ‘wou! bot otherwise have tb the opportu. | mity of coming, and, in brief, the New York day has been a great success, the attendance having been larger than upon any day since the open- Ing of tne gates, It was noteworthy, however, that nearly all the visitors were from New York city. There were not many from the interior towns of the State, At one o’elock 111,588 paying visitors had passed the turnstiles, end before six o'clock the number had reached 124,000, according to the estimates of the De- partment of Admissions, in addition to the 11,000 free | admissions, lis is suid to be a greater multitude than has ever been present at one time at any international exhibition at the full rate of admission. The puniber of passenger cars which had arrived at the Centennial depot of the Penusyivania Ratroad from the New York division upto three o'clock was 235, Lringing about 20,000 passengers. It is probable that avout fifty more curs came in later in the da} the Bound Brook route, the new line to) the usual trains were run. hor specials, but this road brought a great many more than usual, The rates of fare over both lines were on the usual Centennial excursion tarif—from $2 to $5 for the round trip—according to the limitations as to time and trains, the $2 tickets being good only for the day, and tho $6 tickets for filteen days. The piazzas were crowded with citizens and officials ot New Yor Among the latter the following were noticeable:—Police Commissioners Smith, Erhardt, Wheeler and Nichols, Counsellor McLean, Aldermen Morris, Heas, Gross, Billings, Wade, Tuomey, McCarthy und Lewis, the latter reprosenting Mayor Wickbam. Many ladies graced tbe occasion with their presence. It was a matter of comment that so few officials out- nde tho city government were in attendance, The time originally set down for the opening of the levee was eleven o'clock; but the managers, expecting further arrivals from New York, postponed it until one P.M, much to the disappoiutment of the assemble multitude. FATHER THOMAS ADAMS BY THE LIVE SAVING BENEVOLENT AS- SOCIATION OF NEW YORK. Last eveuing, atthe residonce of Rev. Father Mac- Dowell, No, 141 East Forty-third street, an affair took place which did particular honor to one individual, re- flected credit upon the promoters and gave pleasure to It was the occasion of the pro- sentation of a watch dy the Life Saving Benevolent As- sociation to Father Adams for his rescue of an unfor- tunate woman from drowning. The doed ts well re- membered by many, but its worthiness will permit of a brief repetition of tho details. Upon the night of the 11th of February last a woman, crazed by misfortune, attempted to ond her wretched existence by precipitating herself into the East River from the deck of a Williamsburg terry boat. Though Inany on board the crowded steamer saw the act, there was but one who dared attempt a rescue. Thut was the truly reverend Father Adaing, of Brooklyn, who, without hesitation, plunged into the dark aud’ ehiliy waters to save the life of a strang, unfortunate human being. He struggled long and bravely to support the sinking Woman, and, when nearly exhausied, was taken, with the life bo had saved, on board a friendly boat. Such was the deed and such the man whom an as- sembiage last evening delighted to honor, Shortly aiter eight o'clock, when ail the guests had arrived, Mr. L. 1. Coudert, who had been requested by the as- sociation to make the presentation, stepped forward to pertorm his pleasant task, He addressed Father Adams in eloquent terms; brielly recounted the history and objects of the society which he represented; elo- quently related the story of the rescue, and atter de- clariag that there never was x more meritorious pre- sceptauon, gave the watch to Father Adams, The latter, in accepting the token, gave uttoranco feelings of pride and ‘thanklulness in zlunguage. Ho said this was exactly the tenth 4iy of bis ordination to the priesthood, and he was well satistied to. mark the occasion with an onor sogreat, He desired Mr. Coudert to convey nis full thanxs to the association, and jocosely re- marked that to be “watched and chained” by such as tney was to him no slavery. He alluded also with graiitude (o Captain Lewis, of the steam tug Uncle Ned, without whose timely aid both be und his burden might have sank below the waves. Father Adam's reply was heartily applauded, and he was warnly congratulated by the friends present, ‘The watch is a beautiful piece of mechanism, manu- factured by Hammond It is a chronometer watcn, of heavy goid, with double cases and a long, neck chaib, Upon the ‘nner side of one ot the case tt bears an appropriate iuscription to the recipient. im- mediately ajiwe the presentation the hospitable Fathor MacDowell invited the guests to an elegant repast, whieh was thoroughly enjoyed, Atmong those present whose names havo not been meniioned are Me. 8, N. The Buffato Courier speaks of Mr. Wallack and his play of ‘Rosedale’ in the following very complimentary terms:—‘‘Mr. Wallack’s drama of ‘Rosedale’ calls for no especial commentary at this time; it has been bo- velit! unut | fore the public tor years, and although some slight additions have been made to its ‘business’ without improving it it is the same old favorite and will always command agreeable attention, Some of its situations have not been approached on the latter-day stage, and re as bewitchingly fresh and effective as ever, Of the Elliot Gray of Mr, Lester Wallack there is nothing new to be said, His impersonation has passed into dramatic history as a most admirable per- formance, and we bave only to indorse the sound judg- ment of the historians. His grace, elegance and manit- ess are 8¢ well Known to tho country that it ix supers tiuous to refer te them only se far as is necessary to associate Uiem with the character under considera: tion, Indeed, no patron of Wailack’s Theatre aceds to be reminded of the fact that Lester Wallack is a fine looking gentleman, of dignified bearing, easy and uracetul carriage, Of very greut persoua! magnetism Aud a copsummate artist. These qualities shine cutin Kihot Gray, and in some of tho scenes his power of individual.zation 18 displayed with woudertul effective- hess—-we refer More particularly 10 the scene im the Gypsy’s camp, Where his character acting is superb, Mr. Walluck’s performance won abundance of applause, end twice be was enthusiastically called betore the cur- tain”?
