When !m- portant questions involving the course of trade and money areas yet only shadowed forth tho Stock Ex- change is supposed to be behind the envelop- Ing mists and to shape speculation to agree with coming events. Thus when clouds were Gathering tho stock market was the first to take alarm. When the horizon was clear it was the first % profit by courting an advance. The commercial public consulted it asa mariner doca his barometer, end was ina measure guided in its own business by the information thus obtained. In street parlance, the Btock Exchange was supposed to “discount” tho future. Is this true of to-day? Is the tell-tale to be relied upon as in times past? Those are questions which an examination of the condition of aflairs generally can only answer, There ig oral and written testimony to a decided improvement in trade, and there are visible signs which back the declaration, The point is, Can this desirable ehange be relied upon as permanent, or is it only a pacsing gleam of sunshine, evanescent and disappoint- ing? Lt we feel the pulse of the Stock Exchange to test the tone of commercial bealth, the response is an unsatisfactory one. The board has neither signalled, by any persistent rise, an approaehing prosperity, nor does it vow, by its schedule of quotations, offer more than a fitful hope that way, Ether the boasted second eight of the Exchange is in need of barnacles or the commercial tmprovement is a deceptive ona We ure inclined to believe in the pur- bhindwess of the former and to attribute the weakness in the stock list to certain weil defined causes, The whole matter may be summed up im tho existence of suspicion and a want of confidence. The bloom was off the rye, bibulous bulls confessing it and ad- mitting the difficulties of holding the market against the depressive presence of the anthracite funcies, Bubsequently the longs plucked_up fresh courage, and, by using Western Union, with its declared dividend, as a point d’appui, succeeded in giving fresh tono and higner quotations to the active list.
