CAUGHT AT LAST. {CONTINUED FROM EIGHTH PAGE.] Bond of a lodge ir the District of Columbia, evidently uine and probably stolen; bogus gold ore of the fn imation of $20, and a Quantity of checks, proba- bly bogus, since they are all in apparently the same handwriting, which corresponds clove lovely wich that of Burtia They wero for various sums and in various ames and were drawn on the Irving National, Fourth National and {mporters uad Traders’ National banks, of New York city, and on the Kensington National Bank of Philadelphia. They aggregated $1,860, and most of them bore the signature ‘‘A. A. ‘rallmadge & Co,"? Blank checks on all these banks were also found. After considerable haggling t! risoners consented to come to this city in company with Detective Titus, of the Central Office, without « formal requisition. They were arraigned before Justice Duffy at the Washingte: Place Police Court yesterday afternoon and held for examination. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL ‘The Market Strong—A Return of Confidence on 'Change. GOLD 109 1-2 A _ 110. Government Bonds Steady on Small Dealings— Railroad Bonds Generally Higher—Money on Call Easy at 1 a 1 1-2 Per Cent, Watt Srnexr, } Taurspar, Sept. 7—6 P. M. Mendacity mongers took a noliday to-day, which yesterday's labors fully entitled them to, conse- quently she market was allowed to rise and fall on its Merits as the tide of speculation lent it impulse. To those who gave credit enough to their own lies to act upon the short side the result of the day’s business has Deen simply a ‘‘return to plague the inventor,” for no opportunity has been offered to cover and no outward. and visible sign ot a promising nature was apparent atthe close. As remarked on previous occasions, the gun of a more cheerful feeling outsido the street is be- ginning to let in a little daylight upon the floor of the Stock Exchango and to bring with it tho impression that, be the change transitory or lasting, just now the bull side is in the ascendant. The stumbling block formed by the coal fancies has been also pretty well Kicked out of the way and no longer threatens the feet of halting speoulators who have been timorously exclaiming :— Fain would I climb, yet I tear to fall. There was, apparently, no fear of a tumble to-day, for, with the exception ot a brief interval when the weakest hesitated and weakened, the course was on- ward and upward to the end. The good fecting apparent last evening was further developed at the opening this morning in the Western stocks, Michigan Central and Lake Shore, each of which attracted its crowd of devotees and gained en- hanced values irom their homage. There is reason to believe that the same old Morgan-Mills party is on the ‘warpath in Lake Shore and Michigan Central, in- duced thereto partly by the signs of the times and partly by the story that a leading banker wno had thrown over his holdings of the latter security had been quietly rebuying the same at present prices. ‘Whether the tale be one of romance or reality matters Not in view of the fact that Lake Shore advanced from 613, to 524, and Michigan Central from 88% to 41%, Doth stocks closing at these figures. At one time the @0al stocks, which have become almost as much of a public barrator as the Count Joannos, threatened the peace of the market with one of their character- istic ficps, but did little damaye to other securities than themselves, Delaware and Hudson proved the greatest Offender, dropping irom 803¢ to 7534 regular, and 72% Seller 60, the latter stylo of contracts being still the fashion with the bears, in consideration of the sparsity of cash stocks for purposes of delivery. It was quite pataral that the rest of the anthracite family should Ayaipathizo with their afflicted side partner, una they “did s0 to aconsiderable degree, New Jersey Central r ‘Srograding trom 29 vo 26%, and Delaware and Lack: Wanna prom 82% to 80. There was a rally in the Cen- tral property of 13; per cent at the close, but the other fancy failed to sharo In the benefit, A large business in Western Union, withs % per cent advance, was due ins measure to tho declaration of a 13 per cont quarterly dividend, a division of profits, which, ceteris paribus, makes poles and wires more valuable than Contra! and Hudson. An the afternoon tho wouk fecling was completely eliminated from the railway list, and a general advance tovk place which landed prices at tho best figures of the day. TUE SALES TO-DAY.
