Itself to Saxatoca, July 28, 1876, The natural expectation was that Saratoca would Niven up during racing week, but the anticipation has not been fully realized. No one seems tobe able to account for the atmosphere of dulness that pervades the streets and the vast sweep of tho hotels. Some Suggest the tightness of money even among people who command the reputation of wealth Others think that centeunial charms or centennial curiosity have kept Many of our people and our foreign visiiors away from thia usually dashing and brilliont Spa Be that as tt May the season is not yet up to the mark of Saratoga galety. There are people bere by the thousands, yet the capacity of the palatial hotels is not and has not been taxed, although during the regatta week aclerk at “the States’ said they had not a vacant Toom in the house, and hotel clerks ure known to be conscientiously truthful, The people do not seem to enter with zest into anything. They lounge and they mope. There are plenty of pretty, stylish Jadies here, but they complain fearfully of the lack of gentlemen, and certainly they are au essential of watering place life, Their absence is noted on the piazzas and in tne bail room when the music woos with its bewitching Strains to flirtation or to the dance. DULL BALLS AND HOPS, Scarcely within the memory of a regular yearly visitor to Saratoga have the balls and hops been so dull, Last season’s crushed dresses are tantalizingly worn, and the “she correspondent” wili have to draw very largely upon her imagination to paint these toilets in glowing language in ail the new shades and the new quirks of this scason’s style. Yet there are magnificent Aud reckerché toilets seen in the ball room and sweeping along the corridors and through the pariors of the best hotels. There is a lady of distinguished position at “ihe States,” a woman of tho warm, glowing, tropical style, who wears a varied and gorgeous toilet, and Whose jewels are of great value. From ears and Muroat und raven hair flashes tho lurid, fascinati fiamond light nd the green glitter of emeralds that tost afortune. Velvets and laces and heavy brocades, intermingled in tho latest style of Parisian art, drapo the superb figure. At one time the toilet 18 composed of solid dead black velvet, with an Oriental touch of ream and gold drapery about the shoulders; ugain it Is a white, gauzy fabric, with bows and sashes of warm, rich cardinal silk; at another time it is a ciel blue brocale, with a web of rare lace falling over tho arm and lling in the square corsage; still another toilet is a pale salmon brocade over biuish gray faile, Madame is a centre wherever she moves, and a hun- dred cyes follow the sweep of her voluminous train and watch the glitter of her gems and of ner eyes, DISTINGUISHKD TOILETS, ‘There is another lady at the States of the delicate, re- fined representative American type, a lady whose face possesses not the coloring of beauty, but the charm of @ winning spirit Her toilets, like her mannér, aro soft, gracelul, elegant, She wears a rich creamy silk, almost covered with a filmy mass of lace, and a valuable diamond cross sparkics on a simple band of black vel- vetaround her throat. in siriking contrast to this toilet is one of black velvet and biack lace, With sprays of vivid crimson flowers. There wre dainty muslin dresses worn by New York belles, drosses with masses of ruttles and trimmings of light, soit lice. The coarse Straw coaching or Gainsborough hat is much seen on young ladies, It is always worn back from the face With a little toss up to one side. There is a very dashy one of white straw with tho broad brim lined with cardinal velvet and a very long white plume sweeping aver the shoulder coqueitishly worn by a dasihng bruneite. THR ERA OF ECONOMY, Papas cannota flurd the costly wardrobes that their wives and daughters Lave been in the habit of bringing bere, and as many of these lastes were un- willing to come without the usual thirteen trunks Blied with new dressees and hats and gioves and boots and silken hose and contections of every description, they closed up the blinds and remained at home or poutingly went off to a less expensive rotreat, A Yast number of young men, too, who have not money to squander have goue to more quict places, Mount Desert, for instance, where the evjoyments of lite tor young folks are found in the rough, and it is not hecessary to muke three toilets a day. REDUCKD KATES aT THE H TE Some of the hotels are reducin it is possible to get fair accommo by the week ai less than $5 a cay, but viten the small Inside rooms inte which oue is tucked when these more reasonable arrangements are made, are far from agreeable. At the Windsor, the new hotci, the top rooms are about as jargy and airy as any others in the house aud possess the charm of Ireshness, the rooms their rates. Indeed, tions at all of them frouting on Broadway commanding a fine view of that thoroughtare, It is a delightfully kept and beautidul iittie “hotel, and bus dove well considering it is such new thing and the season so lar has been bad. The Piazzas are by far the coolest place in Saratoga, as the breeze bas tull sweep around them, the hotel being on higher grouna than any other in the Vilage. from the top of the Lotel 1# at ouce picturesque and varied. Niacara Faurs, July 28, 1876, The prospects .of business at the Falls were rather dull during the early part of the season, but latterly there has been a siight improvement in the hotel ar- rivals, so that the streets present quite a busy appear- ance, Niagara is not quite the den of extortion that it used to be in war times, as to-day hacks can be had at reasonable figures aud good hotels are not dearer than at other summer sesorts, There has been quite a rush of foreigners during the past two weeks, and to-day [ gat down to quitealively breakfust table, there were two Japanese, three [taliars and two Spaniards close to me, cach indulging in bis own pecular lingo, and when giving their orders the Japancse showed themselves decidedly the best English scholurs, Bridal couples are rather scarce this season, as tie Centennial bas received the most attention from those mated doves, but we had a marriage the other day in a private parlor of the luternational that created a dutier of excitement, as both the bride and bridegroom were really goodiovking and won the hearts of the opposite sexes, WhO sympathized with them in their mistor- tune. We bave been waiting some days for Don Car- Jos. but tue illustrious Spaniard has not yet made his appearance, much to the aavoyance of ‘a number of young ladies who are dying to sce this romantic prince who has fought so gallantly for his inheritance. The excitement during the past month has been the Spelieriui, a very interesting young Malian lady, who yesterday gave her th exhibition on the high ropo over the Niagara Rapids. She i® quite the rage at Ningara, and much petted by the ladies, as they thor- oughly appreciate the magnitudy of the performance she has juss completed, Pecuniarily it hax not been a Success, as, with the oxception of a tew clear-beaded in- arviduals that saw the benefit to the town derived from the walks of Mile. Speiterini, her subseription list was very thiniy filled, and even then one-third of those who put their names down declined to pay when the collector paid them a visit The Tope on whict Mlle, Speiterini walked 1s 1,000 feet long, and was stretched across the gorge of the rapids about 260 feet below the railroad bridge. At that point she was walkihy about 200. teet above the rapid, running water, Ou cach occasion that Mlle, Spelterim: has periormed she bas executed her difficult tusk without the slightest mistuke, although once or twice she had to encounter some especial danger, A sunstroke in the street is not very pleasant, and on a rope 200 feet over water would be likely to unnerve & person, but the young gir! went down on one knee ahd resied until she recovered ber senses and could see clearly, Tho great strength in the performance of Mile, Spelterint is the peculiarly gracetul and artistic manver in which she executes the most difficult teats, aud also the wonderful endurance that enables her to walk 950 fect on a rope, carrying a sixty pound pole.
