Addre jerald office, + THE METEOR The following letters tn relation to the meteor seen on Sunday night will be read with interest :— Detawane Waren Gar, Pa, July 12, 1876. To rum Epiror ov tux Hera In the Henao of the lith ‘J. O. B."’ still gives im Justice to the duration of that wonder{ul phenomenon, About the time mentioned 1 was sitting, in company with my wife and mother, on my portico, and cailed their attention to the magnificent meteor. It came across the mountain tn a dircet course trom New York, and bursted immediately, as it were, over the Juniper Grove House at this place, It seemed to be very low, und its trail of fire illuminated the country as far as L could see My wife, at the moment, allowed it was a rocket from New York. Judging trom the description given by “J.C. B.,” [ think it must have been the same meteor. In its explosion the largest ball of fire plunged ahead, just as the party irom Twenty-third wireet describes, ey it exploded at Delaware Water Gup instead of the Hudson Vulley. J. B.D. NORTH OF THE cITy. Carskiti Mountains, July 12, 1876. To tux Eprror ov tax Heraup;— The elegant meteor seen Sunday night and spoken of in the Heap of to-day by “J. C, B.’? was seen by mo, at this elevation of 3,000 feet, under such favorable circumstances, that certain measurements will assist any competent observer in New York to calculate the height and true course of it. I was sitting on a chair in front of the Mountain House, facing southeast, when the meteor appeared at an’ elevation of 14.2: and rose vertically to 38.23, when it sunk to 30.30 and exploded without changing from 1s course, showing conciusively that I was on @ line with its direct course, The meteor, therefore, war 100 miles borth of New York, and if’ “J.C. B.” knows the angle of elevation as seen by him its height ean be ascertain WALTUN VAN LOAN, ON STATEN ISLAND, New York, July 16, 1876 To rx Epitor or Tux Heratp:— Isaw the meteor of the 9th inst, from an upper ifton, SI, Several members of mywamily witnessod the spectacle. It seemed to como 110% the southeast and at about forty-five degrees above the horizon, and to pass nearly on the samo plane to the northwest, exploding before it hud passed a point a little west of northwest from our point of view. It seemed to move fast, so that for a moment wee took it foraskyrocket. It couid hardly have been fitteen seconds in sight, and before dying away it threw off balls of tire ike some rockets. We did not think it could have been half a mile from us nor halt a mile above the earth, P: a IN NEWPORT, RB. L To Tux Evitor ov Tux HEeraLp:— Noticing Professor Parkburst’s request for further information as to the meteor, I saw it on Sunday even- ing last at Newport, KR. 1, but, without a map of the town, could not speak definitely as to its direction, but could do so with such a map, It presented the appear. ance of a large rocket or ball from # Roman candle, and 1 so considered 1t at lirst, x2 CUSTOM I HOUSE NOTES. Last evening Collector Arthur made the following statement to a HekaLp reporter with reference to the ten per cent reduction in the salary of the Custom House inspectors, they now receiving $3 60, instead of $4 as formerly;—“I am shortly going on to Waah- ington to see if their salaries cannot be put back to $6 aday, as is just and fair, aud I hope that the new Secretary of the Treasury, Mr. Morrill, will consent to it, as the demand is but equitable, 1 was instructed to cut down salaries, through exhaustion of appropria- tion, Miteen per cent. I could have redaced the stail, but instead of that I reduced it five per cent and the salaries ten per cont. This I did on tho principle that & portion of a loaf is better than no loaf at all, ia these hard times, The salaries of the inspectors was origin- ally fixed at $3 a day, and it was afterward tncroased Out ten years ago, to not exceed $4, at the option of the collectors of the various jorts be the United States, So we had the dollar margin. ink the inspectors and every one else in the onek House know that I want to do what is fair by them and just to the government.” Mr. Hoffiaan, tor many years assistant cashier, will be sworn tn to-day as cashier. THE OPEN AIR FUND. New Yor, July 12, 1876, To tne Eptron ov tur Henatp:— In behalf of the little suffering ones in St. Mary's Free Hospital for Children, No, 407 Woat Tnirty-tourth etreet, Iam asked to thank you for tho kind mention the convalescent children needed tho fresh air of the Park thoy need it this summer and now.
